The least Warner Bros. could do is to just release it with the full IMAX aspect ratio. Then it will be on the individual's side to scale up the size of their screen at home, similar to what Zack Snyder did with his 4hr Justice League. Give us ALL the picture and we'll worry about the size of the canvas
IMAX does not necessarily equal Academy Ratio. Not all IMAX movies use the Academy Ratio like Snyder did for Justice League. Lots of IMAX movies use an aspect ratio that’s close to 16x9 (I forgot the exact ratio.)
This. I don’t expect HBO to suddenly make my tv produce 12 channels of sound. But i would love to see full image and true composition of shots. It is like someone would put “lighthouse” in wide cut version, just cuz it “fits” tv.
I saw Dune at a regular cinema and wanted to see it again in imax but it had already left unfortunately. Which reinforced my feelings that imax theatres should primarily show things like Dune that were made with imax in mind, or will otherwise benefit from it. A lot of modern blockbusters are just more disorienting in Imax, but I feel like imax should be it’s own thing - an event with epic films that match its scale - rather than just a bigger cinema. Hopefully imax cinemas will re-release Dune part 1 when part 2 comes out 🤞

For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved." And please repent of all of your sins and obey all of God's commands before it is too late 🙏. Amen 🙏
I feel like we got a LOT of pre-release marketing about seeing it in IMAX - but where I am, in Jamaica, that is not yet an option. It was still a visceral, deeply emotional experience experience in "normal" cinema, and even at home later. But I do hope, one day, to experience it in true IMAX, as it was meant to be.
unfortunately IMAX is really rare in my country but still, seeing it in "normal" cinema is such an incredible experience. it was still great to rewatch it on my laptop, but im sad they cut parts of the images to fit the ratio. I'd rather have some black sides than something cut off at the top
I feel you, same here, the one true IMAX cinema in my city has been closed for renovations for years it seems, and while there are standard cinemas pretending to offer IMAX, it's not the same. Last one I got to see was "The Dark Knight" - had to see Dune Part 1 in "Vmax" - not the same thing.
The metaphor of shrinking down the grand canyon was genius, there is a worrying trend of people becoming more content with lesser versions of films for the sake of convenience. There is so much thought and effort that goes into the production of these bigger budget films, heck, even from the few student films I've done I can tell you that the audio designers especially go into excruciating detail with their work. When people go out and watch these films through a lesser medium, well, you may as well have not watched it at all because you simply are not watching what was created, you're watching a downgrade, a demake, a different film entirely. Obviously not everyone has access to the likes of IMAX, I myself am one of the unlucky few to not have any such cinemas anywhere near me, but to be honest, I'd much rather not watch the movie at all than watch a completely inferior one.
People in general have always been searching for convinience unless it come to thing they care about. Like you would be perfectly content with a generic car and a reasonable priced apartment but have high standard for film. But somebody else have the opposite priorities. The problem comes when everything is forced to bow down to mediocrity to fulfill the economical needs: optimising the shit out of ROIs.
@@mdd4296 that's a fair point, it's just a shame that the seemingly vast majority don't care for art in the same way that most of us watching this video do. Personally I feel that if you don't take in a piece of art the way it was originally intended, you are simply not consuming that same piece of art, so artists, or at least their teams, should do everything in their power to distribute their work as faithfully as possible.
I can't watch netflix on a phone, for example. That's why i never install it. And wven on youtube i will save up some of the very best videos. Like the Cosmic works of Melodysheep.
The biggest thing for me was fairly early on; Paul using the voice on his mother. That was like experiencing your ears closing up for a second and then being hit, all over, with the voice. Like a jet passing by at supersonic speed. Truly meant to give you that "experience" Villeneuve talked about. At home it's just not the same.
Its a slight misnomer to say home systems only have two channels. You can build a 5.1 or a 7.1 Dolby/DTS system these days fairly easily, provided you can budget for it, and have the space.
Man i wish i had an imax, none of them near and the nearest are fake. I did watch it with the best equipment i had available locally. First row and i was hypnotized. Can't imagine how it could've been as intended. And i agree about the sizing. Like when i take artistic scenic 4k shots on forza with my xbox. They look terrific, but when i upload some on discord they look so bleak, like things are too small. Scale is key. Perhaps in the future home imax will be a virtual experience
Sorry, but here in Australia - a G20 country - has only two IMAX cinemas, both of which are over 1000 kms away from where I live. So good on you lot for having that luxury...thanks for rubbing it in!
I never even got the opportunity to watch in IMAX. I watched Dune on my laptop while away for work, thought "wow that was great I'll go see it in IMAX when I get home". Came home, and it was already not available barely 2 weeks after release.
IMAX is re-releasing Dune in the US on Dec 3rd for one week only. Some theaters are already listing the showtimes, but the full listing of all the participating IMAX theaters won’t come out til 11/29. Dune is also being re-released in IMAX in several others countries but the dates vary.
I have only watched one movie on IMAX, and I have to admit that the experience was very impressive (sound and visual). I would love to have seen dune on IMAX too, however I live about 1600 km away from the nearest one so that was simply impossible. I did, however, enjoy dune, but I do wonder how much more impressive it must be to see it in IMAX.... Now, unfortunately I am not a patron, but I would love to see that series you mentioned about being a security guard... I worked as a hotel receptionist, often at during the night shift, and I used that time to write...
I may release one of the videos from that series on TH-cam in order to advertise it. I worked 2nd shift-lots of reading and writing for me too. Working alone at night can be great for productivity and also terrible for mental health haha
Great essay. I saw it in a new Cinemark XD theater and thought it was good. Then saw it in a true IMAX theater and experienced what you did. I noted the extent of shots with the extended IMAX aspect ratio and it felt like 40% of the movie. And the sound was so much more visceral without being any louder. It was the best sound design of any film I’ve heard.
I saw the original on my computer screen, and almost hated it. I just saw Dune 2 on IMax and had an amazing experience - and absolutely loved every moment of it. Thank you so much for letting the world know how important IMax viewings are.
I saw Dune once on my TV screen and thought was ok. I watced it again on my Desktop PC(big good screen) and with good speakers on full blast and was a musch better experience
I really want to thank you for posting this. I was going to watch Dune (for the first time) on HBO yesterday, but I came across your video and I decided to do IMAX instead. I am *so glad* THAT will be my first impression of this film. I think I still prefer Bladerunner 2049 in terms of overall film, but Dune was still truly a singular experience.
the best thing about _Dune_ being on HBO Max was that after seeing it in the theatre, I was able to go home and watch it again, but pause and rewind scenes again and again… I just saw _Part 2_ yesterday in IMAX, and while that was a wonderful experience… I really wish I could’ve watched it again on my couch right after 🤷🏻♂️
A surprising middle ground I found was VR. I saw dune recently again at home on my VR headset and it’s pretty good. Theater is still the best place for me personally to watch it. But I got about say 80% off the theater experience just with the headset on. The screen was about the same as a mid to average sized theater screen. (Definitely not IMAX) the picture quality was at worst standard HD. The sound was amazing. And with headsets improving all the time I imagine some people could just use them for a full on imax experience eventually. Only thing missing will be be crowd reaction. And that is probably irreplaceable.
The first time I saw the movie was in 4DX and let me tell you, that was a more "physical" experience than imax. I expect it isn't Villeneuve 's preferred format, it was crazy immersive. Well done Warner Brothers
Great video, thanks! That's a very sad idea that there is only this very brief time when Dune can be seen in IMAX the way it was meant to be. For the rest of time it will only be available on inferior equipment.
The sound mix they're talking about is Dolby Atmos, not IMAX. Although IMAX Laser has 12-channels, Dolby Atmos has up to 64. And Vellineuve said he can't imagine the film in any other format than Atmos - from a sound perspective. So, visually he dreamt it for IMAX, but sound-wise, Atmos was always his go-to. The IMAX 12-track comes close, but there's something more naturalistic and dynamic about the Atmos mix vs the IMAX 12-track
It was not dissapointing at home , but must say i have a good entry (around 300 euro) sony 5.1 home cinema speaker set on my pc , spent hours to set it up correctly , and need to set up differrently any time i have a new game too , so yeah , i think as i see the cost of speakers, this is still a budget option , but man it is worth the investment , even for the 2-3 movies i watch in a month :D Just make sure you watch many rewievs before you spend on anything
Warner really shot themselves in the foot trying to sell HBOmax by releasing so many movies worthy of the cinema experience on streaming. In the long run, people might get used to the mediocre home expereince, but all the talent is going to migrate to other studios with such policies... Great video!!! Thanx!!!
Great, like I wasn't regretting missing the Imax release enough already. [Coming out of regular movie theater viewing] Friend: "That was great! What did you think?" Me: "Screen wasn't big enough." Still loved it, but I knew I was missing out.
its wild how badly WB botched this release. completely handicapped this film. but they still prevailed and were able to make some decent box office numbers. now on to parts 2 and 3.....
I agree, as much as I love my 65" OLED, nothing compares to the theater ecperience. There are movies I will stream the first time I watch them, and others I will only see at the theater the first time, like Dune. I also, with some friends, saw Blade Runner 2049 in IMAX 3D, it was an amazing ecperience. Also, whether you liked Tenet or not, it was an amazing experience in IMAX, it's just not the same on 4K disc, even using an OLED.
High time someone pointed out that the moviegoing experience can't just be replicated on a 5' by 3' flatscreen, it seems like a very obvious conclusion to draw
I feel like Matt Reeves The Batman was also a very different experience in IMAX although i am sure its not exactly for the same reasons as Dune, would love to hear your take on it.
For anyone who hasn’t yet heard- Dune is having a limited IMAX re-release starting December 3rd for one week only. On Nov 29th IMAX will have the full listing of all the IMAX theaters that are participating in the Dune re-release
It's back in IMAX again. I saw it in a premier conventional theater (Cine Capri Scottsdale, AZ). I am going to go see it again in IMAX. Streaming? Are you kidding?
Watched this video when it came out and lamented not seeing this in theatres but surprisingly they are still doing showings in my area and managed to catch it in IMAX. Even better with the second viewing the way Villeneuve Intended. Great thing i had a second chance thanks!
But for covid i would have gone to the cinema, for now i satisfy myself by having read it nearly every year since 1985. Imagination is larger than you might think. ;-)
I totally agree watching a film on an iPhone is not to watch it at all, it's like saying you have seen the Mona Lisa, because you uploaded it on youtube.
Actually its not (only) about the channels, its more the fact that TVs/smartphones are nothing to compare with a cinema. Some frequencys need a certain volume (wich you mostly cant do at home) to show the power behind those specific frequencies
Dune IMAX in theaters for Eternals in less than 3 weeks. Now it’s available only in digital. For me neither is an option since my brother is recovering from a bone marrow transplant. I wish all IMAX films were reintroduced in theaters as sone time later, maybe years later. I think an aftermarket exists for people to see beloved films in theaters but maybe it’s just me
Crazy how so many people see this as the pinnacle of film making while others see it as a boring-ass perfume commercial of a film. What could account for this?
Although the DVD of Villeneuve's Dune may be inferior to the IMAX version, it's still far and away the best video adaptation there is, and I'm glad to own a copy of it.
I've been listening to the soundtrack for a long time before it was available in my country's theaters. After seeing it in a Dolby Atmos theater recently, I can tell you that the soundtrack just sounds so DIFFERENT in the theater. Literally the same specific music cues, like the orchestral blast when Paul looks up at the Reverend Mother in defiance, sounds extremely different. Almost like all non-theater sources of the soundtrack were, compressed or squished, losing all the detail.
I saw it in Imax and then later watched it again with my sister who saw it for the first time at home and she really enjoyed it. I definitely agree that Imax was better and that the scale of the shots are better suited for a big screen but it was nice to see her enjoy the film so much even seeing it for the first time on the small screen, I was worried it wouldn't translate at all.
oh dear - the example scene of the ship lifting out of the water resulted in much hilarity - the amount of water such a gigantic object should have actually displaced visually was reduced to a mere trickle. This happens in many instances of the film where it tries to establish enormous clashes of scale only to reduce those moments to sheer farce. A very tedious film that took all of me to sit through to the end.
Cool so with both movies I'll never experience it in it's full depth. Can you get 12 channels of sound at home somehow?? Hope they rereleasr it. But frankly speaking Dune two fell short for me.
I've seen Dune 3 times, twice in Imax, and once on HBO (but streamed in a private, miniature theater). Even though the latter was technically still a theater, the difference was palpable. Not only just for the trimmed down shots, but the perspective from viewing the imax screen in the audience. It really did reshape how the movie 'felt' to watch. It is a shame that the experience won't be the same at home. I hope the blu ray/4k releases at least have some aspect ratio options, to at least get the full picture, if not at the full size. (Either way I'll be watching it at home many times, I loved this movie)
saw it again on christmas with my pops who had bought a bargain bin dvd of it. Luckily we did use the home theatre sound system, very good for its time but I wish we had a better copy and a bigger tv than 50.
So I completely spoiled myself by this being my first imax experience. Being a middle aged woman who has waited my whole life for a new dune(drag me people I love lynch version)Opening night.I need to see this in imax before the night of dune part 2.That will be a blissful day I'm my life
Oh the film still works great in a conventional theater (I know because there are no IMAX theaters where I live so that’s all I had). But it’s true that there is something melancholic about the "real" movie being available for only a short while, with maybe brief rereleases or special screenings in a few years. Only people right now will get the full experience… but that’s also what makes it unique. I kinda had the same impression watching The Summit of the Gods lately. It was the very last screening, and I came out glad that I got to see this in a theater rather than on Netflix.
Never have i seen a better indictment of directors like Villeneuve's "no directors cuts" policy. This is proof that Dune part One does not work, edited as it is. The home release needed an extra 30 minutes of all cut material (dinner scene, yueh and jessica, the baron taunting Leto with the fingers and the note, more Arrakeen scenes, etc) and reedit them into a "whosgunnadoit" (as opposed to a traditional whodunnit) revolving around Leto. The first part needs a complete reedit into a reverse betrayal/murder mystery that ends in exactly the same way as the theatrical version did. Then thr second part is the vengeance/war film. Also, the world doesnt work if you dont mention the Butlerian Jihad and thereby explain, subconsciously, to your audience, that the world regressed in technology willingly. So many more things couldve solved this issue, but those are the main ones. You really dont need more than three hours and a rethinking of pacing and structure to achieve it
Well, Villeneuve cannot blame anyone but himself. He wanted to impress by using the best technology, which is always to a degree an externalizing of excellence. He knew this would make it inherently less impressive and less matching the original format and that IMAX showing would be time limited. He would also have to know that the simultaneous release wouldn't have made that much of a difference because people who want to watch it in IMAX would anyway, and they would probably also have learned quickly that there is a difference. So basically this is not a tragical loss, but a deliberate niche strategy chosen. And it is a pschological deception, because it is not so much that the regular format degrades the movie, but that the IMAX format was the 'extra booster' beyond the usual. Although if it is unique enough, maybe it makes a comeback at some point? Dunno how unthinkable that would be for the (IMAX) cinema business. - But if high tech movie culture is fixated on new content all the time, then that nature serves it right. This is like a spiritual lesson about humanity and technology.
Excellent video, as ever, your content is always a must-see. I hope to see the film in IMAX next weekend. I'd love to see your take on "Sicario" and "Arrival", similarly outstanding films by Villeneuve.
So what you're saying is the filmmakers set themselves up to fail from the get go? That mentality, "we made this product with this VERY SPECIFIC method of interaction in mind, and don't really care about or even balk at the thought of people who want to interact with our product in any way other than the one method," it's defeatist and shouldn't be encouraged. I'll analogize it for simplicity, video games are developed for the lowest common denominator in hardware specs, that's why a lot of AAA titles are never more complicated than your standard 16-button and 2 analog stick controllers can support, also why graphic design is never all that far apart between systems. Until IMAX grade displays and sound systems are more common in every day housing, making movies that will only work if seen on those displays and heard with those sound systems is not something to be praised. Oh, and INB4 people start getting on my case for hating the movie, I first watched it through streaming on my living room TV of 55" at 1080p, I loved it so much that I proceeded to buy and read the books, which only increased my admiration of Frank Herbert's work.
I have a different perspective. Accessibility and longevity. Accessibility is obvious. There are many people that cannot spend the extra cash on a imax experience. From the moment you make a movie be a lesser version of itself on a non-imax system, you are aggravating the access to culture by class problem. Longevity I think is also obvious. If a movie doesn't work on a small screen, it won't survive the moment it leaves theaters. After that people will only be able to watch it on their TVs or if they are lucky and a theater near them to show it again. If a director makes a movie thinking only on the big screen and completely ignores that it will be also on TVs to the point that it stops working, they are sacrificing an important part of that movie's lifespan. All that doesn't mean the director can't choose to sacrifice those stuff if they want and have a specific vision, but it shouldn't be on the viewer's shoulders to watch "the correct version" or not bring able to speak of the whole movie, as the movie viewed on my TV is still the movie and if it doesn't work than, it's a problem of the movie.
I disagree. Why would you say every art must be mediocre to be optimized for convenience and compatibility like smartphone screens? Rather than building a tall, aw-inspiring monument like the eiffel tower, we should spend to money to build many small versions all over the world, so that people who cannot afford to go to Paris have a mediocre, insignificant tower that nobody will care about in the first place, because it is so small and insignificant?
@@felixschweigkofler7630 what I mean is that the burden to watch the "best version" shouldn't be put into the viewer. When the film maker decides to do something like Dune that is supposed to be viewed in IMax, they have to understand they are sacrificing the experience for the largest portion of the viewers that will only watch it on lesser theatres rooms or even their TVs, and not complaint that not everyone is paying the expensive IMax tickets to "watch it properly". Therefore, it is a valid criticism that the movie doesn't work as well on the other screens. Not that they should make it less, but they shouldn't only focus on the IMax experience unless they are completely ok with sacrificing the long term life of the movie.
@@TheLucasdms You are working under the assumption that they are not ok with "sacrificing the long term life of the movie". It was never indivated that villeneuve wasn't aware of it and accepted as price for making an artistic masterpiece. In non-IMAX cinemas it was still good and nobody can expect him to reduce it so far that it can be watched anywhere. Furthermore, this Dune will live on in the people that have seen it and the overwhelming impression might lead to more of such movies being made. Tolkien also "sacrificed the long term life of his books" by writing in such a unique style that many people find unreadable, but nevertheless his work lives on.
@@felixschweigkofler7630 He has stated his dissatisfaction with people watching it in non IMax rooms, as if that is the main way it was supposed to be watched, and that's the parameter it should be evaluated. What I was trying to say with my comment is that is the wrong take. The normal movie theater version and even the TV version of the movie are valid experiences to be criticized upon, as those are the ones that will reach most people and will live on after it leaves the cinemas. Dune still works wonderfully even if I was to watch it through my phone, but if it didn't and it was only a good experience through IMax, that would be a more than valid criticism.
Watching the giant Atreites whale-ship, I Harkonened back to the episodes of House where he says (in his near-perfect American accent) "where's my metaphor?". Since I couldn't withstand Imax and their 12 Channels of max sound, I decided not to indulge the whale-beast of the media and left for home.
Thing is, in this specific instance, I really think the simultaneous release helped the movie rather than hindered it. Dune is notorious for the depth of the story and how “unfilmable” is supposedly is, and in the run-up to Denis’ Dune, there was a good deal of concern if he’d pull it off. I know I had my doubts, so I just watched it at home. And fell in love with the movie to the point where I then purchased a pair of tickets and took my daughter to see it on the big screen. I can tell you for a fact that would not have happened if I hadn’t been able to see it at home first, because I was NOT going to spend $30-45 on it otherwise, and im willing to bet that my experience was by no means singular about Dune’s viewership.
A Demon theater amp with Paradigm mini monitors in a small room will knock you out. I used Paradigm Atoms for my rear speakers. And never buy the. cheapest center channel speaker from any company. Even Paradigm. I highly recommend Paradigm mini monitors, (in a smallish space) because you will NOT need a sub woofer.
I watched Dune in IMAX and it was the best cinematic experience I’ve had in years. I also later watched it at home and I still loved it. Obviously IMAX was way better but it can still be enjoyed at home.
I love Villeneuve and the original book, but this movie has such little text to it, it was a bit underwhelming. The amazing visuals and sound design mean little to me if I don’t find the story inspiring or interesting :/
Amother great video! The only thing that bothers me is the use of cheesy stock images and photoshops during the video. It feels like it just takes down the message and quality. You dont need them, your message is already great! If you want to show something relevant, maybe consider shooting some personal footage, of your own tv maybe? Keep up the good work!
Thanks for the feedback. It’s partly convenience, but also an attempt to avoid copyright claims. It’s easier to argue fair use when there are stock images/footage used in the video.
Ima a frustrated mad book reader because I FINALLY could LIVE the DUNE novel with this film but all of the Game of Thrones nitty gritty politics and interpersonal story arcs were cut/hinted at and then the length was cut still (many scenes were filmed but dropped) for movie theater showing times so it ended on a hanging unfullfilling confusing note that works when you can JUST TURN THE PAGE or watch the next episode ie Syfy Dune series, it should have ended on Paul swearing to his mother he couldn't leave due to already being affected addicted to the spice, a freak and seeking revenge for his father's death then facing the worm THE.END and the next movie becomes his facing becoming one with the Fremen and if Shahalud wills a Third movie covering Dune Messiah his failings and the jihad in his name. For me it's like many shakespeare plays are done and this one is a good one but never definitive vs the book, rather LISTEN to the audiobooks my IMAGINATION is better than films.
I disagree tbh. I think enough of the politics was included, it was just delivered more visually compared to through dialogue, which I didn't mind. I would've maybe liked one scene between Jessica and yueh, but that's all. But I thought the ending was perfect. It makes more sense to me to end with Paul finding his determination. As the movie says, Paul has to die for the kwisatz haderach to rise, and jamis' death is the marker for that. He has killed now, and the movie finishes after Paul has undergone a great change. When they walk off, it's clear that they're headed to the sietch. And the next movie can start by welcoming Paul into the fremen community, an ominous sign for how that movie will end
@@jacobellis5822 I've lived with the books for decades since the 80's and seen other versions and I do not agree the intracy of the politics was there only barely TOLD not SEEN there, was the filmed dinner scene they cut so Arrakis just looked like a bunch of sand blocks and random groups of Fremen worshipers, soldiers, no street life of the Arakeen city, there was internal Atreides suspicion & strife, rather seen the Emperor & more Harkonnen intrigue than 5+mins of massive ships if a choice had to be made. I more mad at WB&ATT forcing Denis edit choices.. But hey we gots the PURTY AWESOME effects. Really it's a matter of age group preferences and this stuff the kids like and feel special, I got over it after the 2nd-3rd viewing for the details but now it bores and annoys me & I rewatch the TV series & listen to the audiobooks use some of the Dune2021 imagery in my head now. For shits&giggles I'll watch the Lynch 1983 DUNE director's edit or the fan edit, get more book scenes imagery than be cheated.
@@klyanadkmorr fair enough, if it doesn't match your vision that's understandable. I would've liked a street scene of arrakeen too, but at the same time I liked the feeling of distance it created, between the atreides and the people. They weren't there for the citizens, they were there out of necessity, and I think Denis chose to emphasise that. I can see Denis contrasting the lifelessness of his version of arrakeen (a city oppressed) with the freedom and life of the sietch communities in the sequel. The dinner scene is one of my favourite scenes in the book but I understand why it was cut for the adaptation. I dint think they actually ended up filming it, from what I've read. Is a bummer though. But genuinely i think Denis made all the right cuts/changes, for his specific vision.
Addendum - Good stuff only if you live in a high trust society with good theaters. Otherwise you're better off just pirating it and rebalancing the audio to better fit whatever sound system you got.
@@TheHungeringCold The pirated version of it will only have the 2 channels of audio though since it's from HBO. How can you replace the audio from the 10 missing channels?
The movie isn’t that good, IMAX does make it a visceral experience. I read all the books and this version has a lot of emoting and less character development or story. Which is why it will be forgotten but as an IMAX experience it was crazy and fun. It shook me up and was intense. Like a ride at a park. But I didn’t walk away thinking about the film, except for everything the story lacked and the feeling that it was miscast.
Making films just for IMAX is just plain stupid. There are too few IMAX screens. Make films for cinema. Make sound so that dialog is clear. Screw the number of audio channels - make a good film!
The lighthouse is probably the only movie I've seen in full screen in the last 10 years that I thought needed to be
It's like cropping Simpsons, infuriating
I just don't understand why home release doesn't offer IMAX image area...unless they are planning to double-dip us with more purchases
Finally someone who understands this movie, why it's unique and why it worked as a outstanding experience on iMax.

I watched Dune in theaters and IMAX and the latter was incredible the sound itself was awe inspiring
Stupid scene that wasn’t even in the book. There for stupid children.
@@justmeeagainn Doesn't matter as it doesn't take away nor serve a single purpose of being exposition.
Its a slight misnomer to say home systems only have two channels. You can build a 5.1 or a 7.1 Dolby/DTS system these days fairly easily, provided you can budget for it, and have the space.
I'd go visit the void where the Grand Canyon used to be.
It would be even more impressive.
And one is out of action, being re-fitted for years... (sigh)
I never even got the opportunity to watch in IMAX. I watched Dune on my laptop while away for work, thought "wow that was great I'll go see it in IMAX when I get home". Came home, and it was already not available barely 2 weeks after release.
I’m really hoping they re-release Part 1 in IMAX when they release Part 2…
IMAX is re-releasing Dune in the US on Dec 3rd for one week only. Some theaters are already listing the showtimes, but the full listing of all the participating IMAX theaters won’t come out til 11/29. Dune is also being re-released in IMAX in several others countries but the dates vary.
@@raquelveloz2481 THANK YOU.
@@EmpireoftheMind So true!
This is why the director OPPOSED it being released on HBO at the same time.
You’re welcome! Bladerunner 2049 is fantastic.
the best thing about _Dune_ being on HBO Max was that after seeing it in the theatre, I was able to go home and watch it again, but pause and rewind scenes again and again… I just saw _Part 2_ yesterday in IMAX, and while that was a wonderful experience… I really wish I could’ve watched it again on my couch right after 🤷🏻♂️
Long Story Short: dune was visually meant to see in 1.43:1 aspect ratio, the crop versions just ruined the framing of the movie.
Just came back to this video to say, Empire, you completely convinced me to see part two in IMAX. I can't wait to experience it in March!
The nearest IMAX is in Pittsburgh but I have no way of getting there. I saw Dune twice in cinema, though. Even in Cinema, it was intense!
Anyone else pee a little when they showed that first shot of the spice collector in IMAX?
Just got my tickets last night for the 70mm showing at the BFI for part 2. Bang in the middle, very excited :D
Another great video from the most underrated channel I know
The first time I saw the movie was in 4DX and let me tell you, that was a more "physical" experience than imax. I expect it isn't Villeneuve 's preferred format, it was crazy immersive. Well done Warner Brothers
I want to have a Dune day. So every year IMAX plays Dune on one day
Great video, thanks!
Thanx!!!
Can't wait for your new videos about the American Revolution! Paths of Glory still makes me cry
Same here man
Great, like I wasn't regretting missing the Imax release enough already. [Coming out of regular movie theater viewing] Friend: "That was great! What did you think?" Me: "Screen wasn't big enough." Still loved it, but I knew I was missing out.
You probably won't see this comment, but it's coming back this month (early dec) for a short IMAX run. Check your local listings
its wild how badly WB botched this release. completely handicapped this film. but they still prevailed and were able to make some decent box office numbers. now on to parts 2 and 3.....
I hope to see Part 2 in IMAX if possible. My little crap town only has a regular theater, but I'll be in the Portland area for Part 2.
Definitely, going for a movie is never topped by smaller ones. Evn tho i am really liking my "70 with Ambilight, it's really cool and adds spice
Good take on the movie EotM. And for those that missed it, Dune will have another IMAX theater run starting on December 3rd.
Was the first minute and forty seconds really necessary? Don't get me wrong, it is well written, but still...
But for covid i would have gone to the cinema, for now i satisfy myself by having read it nearly every year since 1985.
Imagination is larger than you might think. ;-)
I watched it in 4DX... man that was an experience!!!
YES the most beautiful aspect of the film was its music and sound. Glad to see someone appreciating it that way.
Dune IMAX in theaters for Eternals in less than 3 weeks. Now it’s available only in digital. For me neither is an option since my brother is recovering from a bone marrow transplant. I wish all IMAX films were reintroduced in theaters as sone time later, maybe years later. I think an aftermarket exists for people to see beloved films in theaters but maybe it’s just me
Their actually rereleasing the movie in IMAX on December 3rd
I agree.
So painful that there are no max theaters in my city
Crazy how so many people see this as the pinnacle of film making while others see it as a boring-ass perfume commercial of a film. What could account for this?
Although the DVD of Villeneuve's Dune may be inferior to the IMAX version, it's still far and away the best video adaptation there is, and I'm glad to own a copy of it.
I had a similar experience with the northman. It was intense in IMAX.
So glad I saw it in IMAX on day one. Such a great film
Very well stated. Concise and honest. Consider me subscribed!

WELL? WE'RE WAITING...
When is Dune 2 released?
oh dear - the example scene of the ship lifting out of the water resulted in much hilarity - the amount of water such a gigantic object should have actually displaced visually was reduced to a mere trickle.
So I guess Dune is the first movie. I wasn't able to see properly because I'm too poor.
And it seems fitting for the time we live in.
Blade Runner 2049 was the same way.
Very glad I have a massive tv and a good sound bar. It's not as good as theaters but damn it's good
Hi, great video. But can you put the links in the description that you mentioned in the video?
You really dont need more than three hours and a rethinking of pacing and structure to achieve it
It's coming back to iMAX!
I’ve seen it once in IMAX and regretted not going back. Thank you for pointing out its return, I will definitely be seeing it this weekend.
Agree. I think Arrival might resonate with me even more than Dune, just because I feel more of a heartbeat coming through the screen with that film.
Well said! I completely agree.
Good point.
What are some ways to enchance your movie experience at home for cheap? I'm thinking good headphones with a large screen would do well on a budget.
Decent speakers with a subwoofer > any headphone
A Demon theater amp with Paradigm mini monitors in a small room will knock you out. I used Paradigm Atoms for my rear speakers. And never buy the. cheapest center channel speaker from any company. Even Paradigm.
I highly recommend Paradigm mini monitors, (in a smallish space) because you will NOT need a sub woofer.
I watched Dune in IMAX and it was the best cinematic experience I’ve had in years. I also later watched it at home and I still loved it. Obviously IMAX was way better but it can still be enjoyed at home.
Awesome movie to see in theaters
I love Villeneuve and the original book, but this movie has such little text to it, it was a bit underwhelming. The amazing visuals and sound design mean little to me if I don’t find the story inspiring or interesting :/
the slow burn is a lot to settle to
I hope they rerelease Part 1, before Part 2.
Dude, if I have to cover my ears the sound is too loud. Besides, we only have 2 IMAX theaters in my country.
Why only 720p?
I was wondering that myself. Still figuring out Premiere.
Please bring this back to IMAX
Good stuff - Here have some viewer engagement
Addendum - Good stuff only if you live in a high trust society with good theaters. Otherwise you're better off just pirating it and rebalancing the audio to better fit whatever sound system you got.
@@TheHungeringCold The pirated version of it will only have the 2 channels of audio though since it's from HBO. How can you replace the audio from the 10 missing channels?

What your saying is that Imax is crutch for Veulnouve becuase he is a subpar filmaker

The movie isn’t that good, IMAX does make it a visceral experience. I read all the books and this version has a lot of emoting and less character development or story. Which is why it will be forgotten but as an IMAX experience it was crazy and fun. It shook me up and was intense. Like a ride at a park. But I didn’t walk away thinking about the film, except for everything the story lacked and the feeling that it was miscast.
true, release the imax cut
Epic art only works on an epic canvas... I get it but I missed it in IMAX.
Argh! Why am I just hearing about seeing Dune in I Max
Making films just for IMAX is just plain stupid. There are too few IMAX screens. Make films for cinema. Make sound so that dialog is clear. Screw the number of audio channels - make a good film!
Not everyone has access to imax theatre …..plus covid
I'm in Vermont...no Imax
Wish I had the 12 ears people use to listen to the 12 channels.
I saw it in a standard movie theater. I thought it was incredible. I don't care that I didn't see it in Imax.
The problem has a simple solution. Play Dune, both parts, in IMAX theaters, indefinitely 😀😅
