The War on Drugs break your heart and put your broken heart back together at the same time.
Indeed, they do. My 30+ year old son alerted me to these guys. I’m smitten. What a wonderful performance. 👍
Joscelyn Weatherhog this is the best way to put it.
Yes 😔
Couldn't say it better
Jajajajaja
I’m an old California grandpa who has heard a lot of live music from famous bands. I think “ The Deeper Understanding” is in the top 3 albums in the last 20-30 years. I don’t say this lightly. But deeply, with some understanding.
Thank you for the recommendation.
I am 69 yrs old...haven't heard a band this good since the golden era of my youth.
Thanks Dan, your comment has brought me to stop and listen to this band I’ve never heard before. I can really feel your genuine and well heeled endorsement that I find refreshing. From one middle age California hippie to the next. ☮️
I agree with you. Certainly the best band since Y2000.
First hearing I thought Tom Petty, Springsteen, Dylan well mixed and new. I Love it. Run to buy Lost in a Dream and deeper understanding... They are two of the best albums I own
The best band to vibe out to while driving that's for damn sure.
Eric Crane Couldn't agree more, my friend.
I had some HEADY experiences with this album cranked, windows down, in Western Mass. One of my favs of all time!
Tyler George-Minetti Heady...I like that. Respek
Meat Puppets II is pretty awesome for driving too.
I will add Joshua Tree National Park to that as well. Or any wilderness for that matter.
Adam Granduciel is one of the most under-rated musicians and songwriters in modern music
He is incredibly exceptional, I went extra heavy on the choice of words for this magnificent being as I should.
Hey cuzn! Indeed, so tasty, so REAL! No plastic (no over-production).
@@mikeferguson4816 spot on Fergie 😉😊
Sure is
Still don't know why their TH-cam guy or gal doesn't do this for every video...
Pain: 0:26
Holding On: 5:35
Strangest Thing: 16:50
You Don't Have to Go: 23:32
thanks mate
Yeah thanks. I don't know this band (yet) and just stumbled in here, and had no idea where to start looking for the music until I saw this list of titles. Much easier than trying to find the titles again by backing up the video. I hate to interrupt a good song just to search back for the title. Phenomenal audio quality, BTW.
since they do upload the songs separately as well. people watching the whole set generally don't want to skip.
Real MVP, right here.
man of the people
That fucking drummer is something else
Charlie Hall
He has a lot of cymbals
Amen.
THIS!
Yeah, he's super fucking good.
First, the KEXP sound crew should get awards for this performance. Each instrument is perfectly staged. There is a lot of information to represent here but ALL of it is perfectly mixed.
Second, I have never LISTENED to WOD before, yet this is a watershed moment for me musically. I can look back over the 50 years of my life and point to these moments and see their effect on my life. In 1981 it was Joy Division. In 1982 it was the Comsat Angels. In 1983 it was Stiff Little Fingers. In 1985 it was the Jesus and Mary Chain. In 1991 it was the Catherine Wheel. In 2018 it is the War On Drugs. I have been changed again. Amazing music.
Sorry you had to wait another 27 years
I'm not, I admit I was starting to worry whether it would happen again! Thank you for the concern. Have you been listening to them for awhile now?
thats awesome man.
Well said!
Its a beautiful song ;) Btw What d'you think of this one? th-cam.com/video/1b85V2p4puw/w-d-xo.html&list=PLWehun4PmMf_00nsBZDretT5gHW_zhBeb
There will be no better way to listen to A Deeper Understanding than listening to it while walking in the city at night after it rained.
I listen to it on repeat while riding my bike up and down to coast between San Diego and San Clemente.
a road trip soundtrack
Driving back from the beach to the city at night.
thats so rad man
plenty of opportunity to just that in rainy old Dublin
The way "You Don't Have To Go" ends is something else. This album was my therapy for some time 5 years ago, and I had tears in my eyes every time this song wrapped up the album. It still gets me every time.
im no audio engineer... amateur or otherwise, but KEXP has some of the best sounding live performances i've ever heard. everytime. they have turned me onto bands, i may otherwise would have shrugged right off.
Agree 100 percent!!
Realize that this is how almost ALL recorded music could sound, if every freaking band and mastering engineer didn't brickwall the crap out of everything. The audio we could have from the past 30 years would be unbelievable....instead, it's all compressed. Look into the loudness war, if you're not aware of it. It is disgusting how technology has improved in every area of our lives, yet recorded music sounds worse now than it did 50 years ago. But that being said, yes, the KEXP sound crew does it right!! Best recorded performances out there. Go look up Local Natives and listen to how well that's recorded....the harmonies.....unbelievable. The KEXP guys should be consulted for all recorded music!! :)
@@mattdm11 what do you mean by brickwall?
@@staylucky4727 the quiet and loud are the same volume. The waveform looks like a brick. Google the loudness war...it will start you on your journey.
@@mattdm11 Interesting read on Wiki about this. Thanks!
This album takes me to another dimension.
The drummer is really feeling it, I love it
think everyone feels it :) DO YOU FEEL IT?
He better - it all depends on him. He's amazing
Charlie Hall is the man
Plays the perfect amount - never overdoes it. In the pocket the whole time.
We Love You Cheryl as much as we love The War on Drugs
This station ROUTINELY mixes better than the albums. Whoever does that, amazing. And this is my current fave.
KEXP deffo has one of the best live sounds ! Good job to the engineers!
The War on Drugs, thank you for existing. Thanks for the music!
Sitting here with goose bumps all over. FINALLY, some actual MUSIC!
These guys need to put out a Live Album.
TheCannedWalrus why no?
Totally agree! Sometimes their better live than studio
Maybe what people understand as Live album tends to be sloppy. This KEXP LIVE is a controlled environment play. Not as they would play on a live stage with thousands of fans screaming and the guys moving around and the stuff that happens on a live show. This KEXP experience is very different from that.
But does KEXP alter and improve the music afterwards? if this is the case, then it's the reason why it sounds that good?
KEXP is basically a studio environment - its live but super controlled. Ever seen the Basement Session from RADIOHEAD - its unreal. Live is always dependent on the ROOM. There's nothing wrong with that though. I'd LOVE to hear a WOD really nice indoor theater album. Don't need a stadium album. Leave that to Beyond and music made for that scale.
Massively talented & massively under-rated,just seen their performance at Glastonbury on Sunday night & they are becoming one of my favourite bands, keep the albums coming boys!! 🎸👌🤘
Same. I've been aware of this band for quite a few years and really enjoy Slave Ambient and a few tracks from the following albums but when I watched their set live from Glastonbury it was a lightbulb moment. They looked and sounded absolutely spot on and in fact sounded better live. Always a good sign. Now I'm kinda obsessed with them tbh. Such a great set in the sun. Unfortunately I can't find it on TH-cam (just the audio). Best band by a hundred miles that weekend.
They're great but they're not under-rated. I read that so often in comments on various bands and I find it very parochial. They don't sell as many records as Taylor Swift, but they are current and one of the most popular and respected indie bands of the past twenty years. You don't get nobodies playing Glastonbury.
This music reminds me of a time that I struggled with. A fabulous radio station where I discovered this fabulous band! My momma was dying from ovarian cancer. The music gave me something I could hold on to! Strong music for my soul! Bittersweet and beautiful!
Your story had me in tears ❤️
There is so much nostalgia in their sound, like a distant love song, for some love you left on the sand’s beach, along the Pacific ocean.. 🥰
This song "Pain" when I heard it. Marked a moment in my life, when I went from kinda worrying about my little lane in life. To really feeling a part of this whole human thing. That we literally all struggle. That's music. Great music. It makes you really think really feel and just it's something many many paragraphs can't quite explain. Thanks Adam
Great band. This is their time to shine.
My ears are drooling....
Oh man mine too - I was swimming in my local river last week and got carried downstream right next to this sluice dumping human waste into the water and they got infected pretty bad; the doctor says I'll probably be able to keep them but I'll be lucky to regain full hearing, especially in the left one. Sucks because I've been on strong antibiotics so I shouldn't really drink but I was at my cousin's friend's uncle's wedding the other day so I had a few drinks cause it's rude not to and they hit me pretty hard so I didn't even notice the discharge leaking all over the shoulders of my best suit. I took it to the dry cleaner's the following day and they phoned yesterday saying there's nothing they can do to get the stains out since they're really impregnated deep into the fibres. So I yelled at them down the phone for like 10 minutes because what the fuck are they doing in the dry-cleaning business anyway if they can't get rid of a little bit of otic discharge, and now my dad has confiscated my pet snake because he tried to get some stuff dry-cleaned today and they wouldn't do it for him because apparently I used "racially inflammatory language" when I shouted at them and they're even considering pressing charges, which I'm pretty worried about because if the courts rule against me and it goes on my record then what college is going to take me once I graduate next year given the current political climate? So yeah be careful where you swim.
It's like 80's Bob Dylan if he cared deeply about melody and band cohesion.
Nail it!
Its a beautiful song, thanks for sharing Jesse ;) Btw What d'you think of this one? th-cam.com/video/1b85V2p4puw/w-d-xo.html&list=PLWehun4PmMf_00nsBZDretT5gHW_zhBeb
Thought the same thing. Esp these most recent albums.
He has a voice with a cross of like Bob Dylan and Bryan Adams
@@bittersweet_reign4159 And Mike Scott
Love it. You could listen to the audio without video and think its the album being played. They are CRISP
I saw them live recently and it wasn't like that at all. Probably just the venue I saw them at but it was disappointing. This is one of my favorite bands!
@@Mike9201984 You probably got very unlucky... I saw them 4 times already and each one of those performances was better than the last one.
Pain makes me cry like a baby
Okay guys, now we are witnessing pure art over here. My congratulations!
Granducilations to you to, love from war on durgs x
Shoutout to the bass player. Superunknown shirt is STRONG.
It's not Superunknown it's Ba
dmotorfinger dude !!!
I've watched the last KEXP War on Drugs performance like 3 million times. And now this! Awesome.. what an amazing band. Wish I could fly to America and see you guys on tour. Come to Brazil!!
I came to Rio
Maria Vitória Garcia de A. Camargo ....and to Germany!
Também já assisti várias vezes as duas performances deles no KEXP. Simplesmente demais. Ia ser incrível se eles viessem ao Brasil
Ctz faz 8 meses q só dá eles e Mac DeMarco nos meus chills
That 'Strangest thing' solo gives me the chills, amazing
One of the best bands out these days. Super underrated...real solid performance!
I can't stop listening to this version of "Strangest Thing". It's amazing!
Charlie is honestly one of the best drummers out there. He plays with such restraint yet such passion. And my god does he look different here than he did the last time they played KEXP
Connor Biddle in the pocket of the pockets pocket.
Great band! Notice that here he looks like Leon from Blade Runner.
whats he using for a kick?
Nadine Kellman
His foot
dude, hes tight. almost electronic sounding. ...and hooo-lyyy fuck is he riding the wave, right now. i noticed the difference immediately! hahaha, its awesome!
Charlie bossing it just like the last KEXP session. He's so important to their sound, legend.
I've been waiting 3 years for this!!!
You stole my comment haha
Mitch Girard same here
so , I been waiting 40 years to be in the total solar eclipse
saaaaaaaaame
But it was worth waiting for 👌
The deep tone of the sax riding along with the bass sets an incredible mood throughout the album. Heading down a hill on a recent road trip, I hit 90+ on a wide open 2 lane local route without noticing one bit.
So, so so good. Best band in years.
The war on drugs makes my heart melt, i go from feeling hopeful to nostalgic, and then I jump back in to hope!
saw them for the 12th time recently. God damn, they just get better and better. Truly an incredible live force now. Cant wait for the next time.
Strangest Thing is an Absolute Masterpiece.
What about thinking of a place?? Nearly every song on that album is s masterpiece
@@Scrubbini Great Song.
I first heard the track “Pain” on the radio and was immediately intoxicated by its beauty, immediately searched the album on Spotify, played it and smiled, and cried, it’s really something special, he’s far from a flashy guitarist but the secret is the notes you don’t play, amazing
the bass player / tone and fills are on point. tasteful.
My old old timer heart makes a jump . This band is the shower for my brains and and give my abig smile from ear to ear.
What a sound. War on drugs is for me the band . EVERY DAY i listen to this AWESOME band.
I love these guys.
These guys sound freaking amazing in a live performance, almost studio level. Absolutely stunning.
Sounds even better than their studio release
The most hypnotic voice!.... I found war on drugs by accident a little while back!.... What a very happy accident!....
Simply outstanding!....
😎👌🌾🌾🌼
Same. Can totally relate. Found them accidentally on Spotify and wow...just wow!
im 25 and im sooooooo happy to have found this band!!! where have you been all my lifeee
Bass dude in this band is quietly back being a stone cold killer. Best player in the band.
Keyboardist is pretty solid as well
Those licks are so fire
Do everything once,and enjoy.
This makes every emotion you have ever felt come through, you feel your past, present and future in one rush. Stunning xx
Holy shit this is amazing!!! They sound so tight live!!!
Perfection. Lyrically, Musically, Emotionally,
The band should be very proud of this entire record
Jeffrey Scott I agree
♥️
Album of the year
choggerboom ---could not agree more; best long road trip disc in years!! Play over and over! Disc of the year!!
First band that I can relate to with quality since the 60?s-70s. Thank you! Amazing…Brought so much joy into my life! Thank you!!!!💞
Do you have recommendations? :)
Holding On live is incredible

We are all her children. 🤘🏻

KEXP you have done it again! Great band and great sound highlighting the best music in the world. You guys in Seattle are spoiled with this quality. Thanks for sharing with the world. War on Drugs come to Ireland and meet your fans!
Fucking right on kexp
Cheryl said it the best.. "i dont even know what emotions are overcoming me"
Those last 2 minutes are undescribably good, just reminds me of everything... my childhood , dead pets and on and on
Have also bought myself a gretch semi acoustic guitar and started learning to play thanks to this! Love you guys
Such a beautiful performance. The War on Drugs is surely one of the Top American bands.

Lyrics: Pain, Holding On, Strangest Thing, You Don't Have To Go
Pain
====
Go to bed now I can tell
Pain is on the way out now
Look away and domino falls away
I know it's hard looking in
Knowing that tomorrow you'll be back again
Pin your head and let me in
I'm waiting
So long
I was staring into the light
When I saw you in the distance, I knew that you'd be mine
Am I moving back in time
Just standing still
I met a man with a broken back
He had a fear in his eyes that I could understand
I can even shake the hand
When I break it in
I've been pulling on a wire, but it just won't break
I've been turning up the dial, but I hear no sound
I resist what I cannot change
But I wanna find what can't be found
I'm aware you're tired and lost
Like a demon in the doorway, waiting to be born
But I'm here all alone, just begging
Pull me close and let me hold you in
Give me the deeper understanding of who I am
Yeah, I'm moving back again
I'm waiting here
I'm just pulling on a wire, but it just won't break
I've been turning up the dial, but I hear no sound
I resist what I cannot change, own it in your own way
Yeah, I wanna find what can't be found
Holding On
=========
Once I was alive and I could feel
I was holding on to you
And I redefined the way I looked at dawn inside of you
I went down a crooked highway
Alone outside the line
I've been rejected, now the man has turned and I'm out of time
Ain't no way I'm gonna last
Hiding in the seams, I can't move the past
Feel like I'm about to crash
Riding on my line, I keep keeping on
Once we were apart and I could see red
Never trying to turn back time
Never meant to bring my pain to the front and into your life
Now I'm headed down a different road
Can we walk it side by side?
Is an old memory just another way of saying goodbye?
Ain't no way I'm gonna last
Hiding in the seams, I can't move the past
Feel like I'm about to crash
Riding the same line, I keep keeping on
And he never gonna change
He never gonna learn
I keep moving on the path, yeah
Holding on to mine
When you talk about the past
What are we talking of?
Did I let go too fast?
Was I holding on too long?
Ain't no truths from the past
As silent as the sea
And it holding on too long
But you're right in front of me
And I'm moving on a cast
Shadows on my seam
I keep moving with the changes, yeah
Ooh
Strangest Thing
=============
Some are right underneath
And how I look today
I've been hiding out so long
I gotta find another way
Late at night I wanna see you
Will my eyes they begin to fade?
Am I just living in the space between
The beauty and the pain?
And the real thing
Now the sky is painted
In a wash of indigo
I've been holding on too long
That I hardly know the score
I recognize every face
But I ain't got everything I need
If I'm just living in the space between
The beauty and the pain
It's the strangest thing
Yeah, should I surround my life
Surrounded by a hole
Surrounded by no other
I wanna ride it home
Yeah, be the writer of your own story
Let it turn you onto love again
Be the writer of your own story
Let it turn you onto love again
I wanna ride, I wanna ride
You Don't Have To Go
=================
Love is a bird I can't even see
Even in the darkness right in front of me
And you were shining bright through the window in the morn
There's a torrent that rises gently
There's a wind
You can be free, sometimes brave
Sometimes all you want to do is run away
I don't need a curse, the hurt is much too real
But even worse, I'm silently waiting
For her, the room will be painted
Yeah, I know, it's hard, this time
Yeah, I know, you know, this time...
How could I wait until you recognized me?
When you were there inside my dreams
No, you don't have to go, I want to make you stay
Goodbye, anyway
I heard the news today
I've been up since the break of dawn
I lost my mind today
I'm at the sea, and I can hear the trains
Winds of change, so new
Blow right through me and blow back through you
And pull you into the light, yeah
Now I'm home, and it's clear you're gone
Lost my edge today, singing all my songs in the pouring rain
Pushed and pulled apart by the scenes
I can feel the change
Winds of love blow few, and they move through me, and they blow through you
And take you into the night, yeah
i love that they dedicated "strangest thing" to Cheryl
Love that drummer
Only just discovered this band 🎸🌻 my god this music is effortless and amazing
Me encanta esta banda me encanta la primera canción. Siempre la escucho aquí la pasan en la radio 99.1 doble nueve. El mejor rock del mundo.. Saludos desde lima perú 🇵🇪
I fell in love with this band the first second I heard them. Best music I've heard in a while. Thank u for this amazing music. Love it.
Sound engineering here is incredible. Props to @KEXP! What a powerful sound, each instrument adding to the musical bliss. We are all Charlie Hall!
21:08 listen to that White Falcon scream! Fly me away!
That snare sounds so nice.
Francisco Santiago any idea what the sheet over his snare drum head is?
No idea! It honestly looks to me like he cut up an old t-shirt and taped it on!
Possibly another snare head he cut up? Take an old snare head and put upside down on top of your snare. Instant fat snare
Justin Martindale definitely more plausible than my t-shirt theory!
Here’s a better look at what’s going on with the snare. th-cam.com/video/LA1dvunsBdw/w-d-xo.html

Summer ride on the beach
Howl at the day

Yeah, I can run slowly
Don't run away again
Yeah, I can run in the storm
Don't you run again

I’ll never forget hearing this band for the first time when my college roommate brought home a vinyl of “Lost in the Dream”. No problem with other commenters’ comparisons, but on the other hand, don’t much agree with any - Adam and Co are in a league of their own. Even tracks that I once felt were lacking tend to grow on me over time…one in a million
The denim level in that room was like 10000
Oh my heavens! Strangest Thing was amazing! A very haunting song, "the space between the beauty and the pain"
Grammy well deserved.

I recently discovered this band thanks to Spotify. I was listening to my Foals Radio channel when Pain came on! I honestly felt a connection to their music and started listening to everything they have put out.
Change…in the woods.. OMFG you guys absolutely crushed it!
Very surprised to have discovered another rare and truly talented group of professional musicians who touched my soul with their music.
So glad you got there bro. Best wishes.
Strangest Thing. Man that solo hits the heart.
With all the rubbish music that is around these day's this is an absolute gem of a band. Brain cant handle the awesomeness!
This is blowing my mind. Listening on a pair of Sennheiser HD 650.
Hd598 here...amazing!
listening through a pair of Jerry Harvey in ears Angie, absoulte amazing sound
I love when Adam lights up and starts talking about Sean everett. In my humble opinion, I think that they all made one of the best records ever here, and it's always such an absolute pleasure to listen to, and the attention to detail on all the recording and engineering is so noticeable if you sit with it for a moment, and pays off in such an incredible way, and to me, establishes so so clearly that Sean Everett is the baseline, the gold standard of what modern organic studio engineering looks like.
So glad I discovered this band on Spotify. They are so underrated. Incredible road trip music.
