  • This is the easiest kalua pig recipe for the Instant Pot. In this video, I used my 6 qt but have made larger roasts in my 8 qt and adjust seasonings accordingly.
    Pork Butt or Should Roast 4-5 lbs
    1 cup of water or 1 beer
    1 tbs of liquid Hickory Smoke
    1 tsp or more of Hawaiian or coarse Sea Salt
    Additional Seasoning when shredding:
    NOH Kalua Salt or another sprinkle of Hawaiian salt and maybe a teeny tiny bit more of the liquid smoke-a little goes a long way!

    Displaced Kama'aina pro tip: Add 2 cups raw Baby Spinach to the top before cooking. It adds the same chemical "Tannins" as Banana leaf does. You can also do it for any recipe that requires Ti or Kalo leaf like lau lau. Same chemical, tannin.

      I've heard about using a bag of green tea too. Have you tried it?

      @@SamuraiMama No, can't say I have. Baby Spinach has done a great job of replacing banana. Im in virginia and banana leaf is hard to find outside of flower shops. The flower shop leaves have too much preservatives on them. I grow cold hardy Japanese banana for leaves but its not the same. Add the baby spinach sis, it gives it the local ono taste.

      @@SamuraiMama yeah. It adds that subtle tartness that OG Kalua Pig has with banana. You got a local Mac Salad recipe??? My life goal is trying to find the Rainbow recipe. Or Keneke's in Waimanalo. NEED THAT IN MY LIFE!!!! lmao!

      My Mac salad changes each time I make it lol. Can't settle on one yet. Sometimes I like it like Koji's and sometimes I like it like Kawamotos. (Hilo)

    You are absolutely correct! The amount of things to make is endless! We usually have Hawaiian Samoan food first night and then Mexican the following night.

      Yes! I make roast pork in the IP and it's just basically lots of garlic and then hawaiian salt. But I wouldn't consider that kalua. It's still delicious and a favorite of ours though!

    Hi. How does taste compared to just shredded pork?

    • @SamuraiMama
      @SamuraiMama  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Should be smoky and slightly salty. Which makes it a great base for many other dishes! Chili, stir fry, tacos, sliders, etc.

    what kind of bbq sauce would be good with kalua pig?

    • @orto-ue2kj
      @orto-ue2kj 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      So, traditional kalua pork is eaten as it is with rice and sides. But, if using leftovers for other dishes, like sliders (try King's Hawaiian bread) and pulled pork sandwiches, I like any of the Stubbs line of bbq sauces (mild to spicy). I also like Sweet Baby Ray's too.

      I'm so sorry I did not see your comment until now. I haven't been receiving notifications! The suggestion above is great. I prefer sweeter BBQ sauces but the great thing about kalua pig is that it goes well with anything!
