    First! We have the European hornets and baldface hornets here mostly. I bet that trap would work great on them. What do you use as bait?

      There are several proprietary mixes but bmwhite wine, beer and blackcurrant juice is still a favourite although vetapharma’s attractant seems to ferment less

    Great info guys, keep up the good work.
    Here in UK we must not rely on DEFRA and Bee inspectors. There are far to few and besides, outfits like DEFRA cannot be relied on. Their record for instance, dealing with outbreaks of Foot and Mouth durng the last outbreak showed they were a complete and utter waste of time. Problem was known about FOUR months before being reported!!!
    Instead, it is vital for every beekeeper in the country must do their own part in stopping the spread by being vigilent at all times by laying traps down, even in unaffected parts of the country as a precaution. This, as well as baiting like you did 5 years ago Richard to take out queens in nest. Easily done by smearing yolk baited with Fiprinol onto a few hornets to take back to their nest. This is WAR after all and must be treated as such with everyone taking the problem seriously and doing their part.
    This can be done NOW and most certainly the spread can and will be curtailed indefinately. Of course baiting is illegal ~ HOWEVER best to have a miniscopic effect on the bio-diversity than being plagued by billions of Asian hornets who can lay 180-500 queen cells in autumn with each nest averaging 3000-6000 population who consume 400,000 - 1million plus insects per week!

    Slightly silly question ... what do you do with the hornets once caught? leave them to die or take it somewhere secure to open it and deal with the live hornets that way? 🤔🤔

      Leave them to die, unless you want to give them the soapy water treatment

    How do you know if there around. If they in are state

      You could set up a bait station and monitor it to see if there is activity.
      But I would have thought the government would let all beekeepers know if they’re in the area.

    We don't want to trap European Hornets only Asian Hornets. How about stocking these MAS traps Gruffydd ? You can get the correct boxes from Solent Plastics so it's only the clear plastic funnels to import.

      No traps are completely selective against AH, but believe me we try and avoid trapping Vespa Crabbo ( the common European hornet) but to my knowledge I have no news in a decline in population in Europe since the advent of trapping AH.
      You often can release other hornets if your careful

    Would recommend to have strong colonies instead which is the best protection against hornets! Instead it's splitting hives and splitting hives or caging queens the result of which is weakening the hives.

    • @richardnoel3141
      @richardnoel3141 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It makes no difference. Strong or weak colonies they are predated the same. They will return more to weaker colonies and when they are queen less or on the point of collapse they will try to enter the colony and remove pollen and honey and yes to have super strong colonies is always betting when dealing with everything the bees deal with, but in my experience it makes no difference. You can not do much in an area with high infestation apart from
      Moving your colonies to another location with more hives in the same area. Then the global losses and stresses on each colony are slightly reduced.
