      Kadamattathu Kathanar - Kandathinathinappuram
A Study by Akshay Isaac Vadakkedathu
      About the Word Kathanar:
Kathanar is an Eastern Aramaic word also used in its regional dialect Eastern Syriac & Kathanar means Priest. Kadamattathu Paulose Achan & his foster dad Mar Sabor Abo (Abo means father) lived during 9th century the time when Malankara Sabha was in strong spiritual connections with Church of the East in Edessa of Ancient Persia & thereby used Eastern Syriac. Therefore, the word Kathanar was used for Priests in that era.
      Real History
Part 1: Mar Sabor Abo (Abo means Pithavu) & Kadamattathu Kathanar
Mar Sabor Abo the foster dad & mentor of Kadamattathu Kathanar was an East Syrian Priest who came to Malankara in 823 A.D. from Assyrian Church of the East (Assyrian Church of the East is the Church to which Malankara Orthodox Church of the East was connected from A.D. 201 onwards & thereby got Eastern Syriac) in Edessa of Ancient Persia due to war & served as an important High priest & then Metrapolitan of Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church of the East, especially in Kadamattom Church & Thevelikkara Church. He adopted the small boy Paulose who lost his parents, taught him Eastern Syriac & made him a Shemaassan & later Kathanar of Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church of the East. After serving in Kadamattom St. George Orthodox Church for several years, Sabor Abo was ordained as Metrapolitan Mar Sabor. Later, Mar Sabor ordained Paulose as the new Kathanar of the church, gave his ring to Paulose in his memory, telling "When this ring automatically falls from your hand, you should understand that I am no more." & went to Thevelikkara. Several years after becoming a Metropolitan of Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church of the East, Mar Sabor went through age related illness & passed away while he was serving at Thevelikkara. At the same time while Paulose was conducting Holy Qurbana at Kadamattom Church, the ring fell down from his hand & he understood that Mar Sabor is no more. Being a Metrapolitan, Mar Sabor was buried in a special Kabar inside the Church (not any family vault). Paulose took a shortcut for travelling to Thevelikkara. Inorder to avoid getting caught by the Malayarayas who came outside their forest in search of Paulose & saw him in the premise of Kadamattom Church, Paulose got inside the 'Thurangom' of a well without water in the premise of Kadamattom Church, which was actually a shortcut to Thevelikkara Church. This incident was falsely interpreted by many people as, "Paulose Kathanar went inside the Pathala Kinar & nobody saw him after that." (Argument that Kathanar went to Pathalakkinar & was not seen after that is utter blunder as Paulose returned to Kadamattom Church & when Mala Arayas tried to catch him he prayed, the Church main door was opened, he got inside, suddenly the door was closed, out of anger Mala Arayas whipped the Church wall with 'Irumbu Changala' & a bright Heavenly Light came to the eyes of Mala Arayas & they ran back to forest.) When Paulose reached Thevelikkara Church, miraculously, the right hand of Mar Sabor came rising out from the Kabar as if blessing Paulose. Paulose took that hand, prayed & kept it on the backside of wall of Madbaha of Kadamattom Church. Paulose Kathanar was also an obedient servant of God & kind hearted. People of Kadamattom accepted him just like his foster dad Mar Sabor. Years passed, Paulose Kathanar became old & was buried in a special Kabar.

Part 2: Connection between Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church of the East & Assyrian Church of the East
Both Church of the East & Malankara Orthodox Church was formed by Mar Thoma Sleeha. Church of the East was formed by Mar Thoma Sleeha at Chaldea (ancient name of Edessa) in ancient Persia before forming the Church in Malankara. Malankara Orthodox Church was formed by Mar Thoma Sleeha in A.D. 52 at Maliankara in the northern side of Kodungalloor in Malankara (ancient name of the region from present Kerala to Thiruvithamcode of Tamil Nadu.) Soon after its formation in A.D. 52 to the end of second century, Malankara Orthodox got spiritually connected with Coptic Orthodox Church, & used the Indian regional language translations of liturgy of that Church. In third century, Church of the East Metropolitans (the first Christian migrants of India) reached Malankara, engaged in spiritual friendship with Malankara Orthodox Church, lead Holy Sacraments & gifted East Syriac liturgy which later got burned in 16th century by the cruel Catholic Latin Missionaries who came from Portugal. Catholic Latin Missionaries psychologically harassed Church of the East Metrapolitans & forced them to return to Chaldea & stopped the arrival of new Church of the East Metrapolitans to Malankara.
      Part 3: Kadamattom Church
Kadamattom Church is an ancient Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church of the East dedicated to the memory of St. George & is formally known as St. George Orthodox Syrian Church, Kadamattom. The church is believed to have been established in the 9th century by Mar Sabor. On entering the church, on the left there is a photograph of Mar Sabor Metropolitan, the Reverend Paulose, who was the mentor of Kadamattathu Kathanar. It is believed that Mar Sabor, a Persian high priest established the church with the help of Kartha, the then local ruler of Kadamattom. Mar Sabor was not only a theologian but also a conjurer. He stayed in a hut with a poor widow and her only son Paulose. Paulose assisted Mar Sabor for years and later Paulose was ordained a priest. The tomb of Mar Thoma IX (formerly Pakalomattom Iype Kathanar) lies on the left side just outside the Madbaha or altar room. Tomb of Mar Sabor is at Thevelikkara Church where he served the last.

Difference Between Syro Malabar Catholic Church & Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church:
Syro Malabar Catholic Church is actually of those people who left Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church of the East (formed by Mar Thoma Sleeha in A.D. 52) with Parambil Palliveettil Chandy Kathanar in 1661, became Catholic & established a Suii Iuriis category Catholic Church. In 1663, Pope of Rome ordained Parambil Palliveettil Chandy Kathanar as the first Bishop of Syro Malabar Catholic Church with the name Alexis de Campo (de Campo is the Latin of Parambil). From 1663 to 1873, Syro Malabar Catholic Church used the same Latin Liturgy of Catholic Church of Rome. In 1874, because of the decline of Portugueese overrule Mar Elia Melus of Non-Catholic Church of the East arrived in Malankara. With his help Syro Malabar Catholics tactfully translated the Catholic Latin Liturgy to Eastern Syriac & thereby paved a way for claiming themselves as first & original Mar Thoma Nazranees of Kerala & started teasing Malankara Orthodox with the name Yakkobayakkar (Jacobites) just because they did intercession prayers to St.Yakkob Burdana . On the other hand, Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church of the East who didn't join any other faith, mistakenly welcomed a West Syrian Bishop from Syriac Orthodox Church of Antioch, thinking that he is an East Syrian Bishop from Church of the East. Even that Bishop was unaware of the East - West difference in Syriac Christianity. Later, the Patriarch who was the Supreme Head of that Bishop's Church (Syriac Orthodox Church of Antioch) & forced Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church of the East to use Western Syriac Liturgy in the absence of Eastern Syriac Liturgy that was burned by Catholic Missionaries from Portugal in 16th century.
    Detailed Explanation:
What Syro Malabar Catholics are using is not the original Eastern Syriac (Aramaic) Liturgy of Assyrian Church of the East. Syro Malabar Catholics just translated Catholic Latin Liturgy to Eastern Syriac in 1874 with the help of Mar Elia Melus. If one attend Church of the East Qurbana, he/she will understand the difference. I tell this because I have Church of the East relatives & I have attended both Church of the East & Syro Malabar Catholic Qurbana & Sacraments.
Syro Malabar Catholic is not the only Mar Thoma Nazrani Church of India. There are many Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church members also in Pakalomattom family. Ask them also.
Till the end of 15th century Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church of the East (formed by Mar Thoma Sleeha in A.D 52 of first century) was under the jurisdiction of the Non-Catholic Apostolic Church of the East in Chaldea (a geographical region in Edessa of Ancient Persia) formed by Mar Thoma in A.D 33) & Church of the East Metrapolitans served the Church. In 16th century Catholic Missionaries from Portugal burnt Eastern Syriac Liturgy of Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church of the East, psychologically harassed Church of the East Metrapolitans, sent them back to Persia & stopped the arrival of further Metrapolitans from their Church to Malankara.
Note: Syro Malabar People are also Mar Thoma Nazranees but Syro Malabar Catholic Church is originally of those who left Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church of the East (that is the first & original Indian Church formed in A.D 52 by Mar Thoma Sleeha) along with Parambil Palliveettil Chandy Kathanar in 1661 in rebel to Arkkadeacon Mar Thoma First (the cousin of Chandy Kathanar) & established a self - governing Catholic Church.
In 1663, Pope of Rome ordained Parambil Palliveettil Chandy Kathanar as Bishop with the Latin name Alexis de Campo (de Campo means Parambil). From 1661 to 1873, Syro Malabar Catholic Church used The same Latin Liturgy of Catholic Church of Rome. In 1874, when Portugueese overrule declined, Metrapolitan Mar Elia Melus of the non-Catholic, apostolic Assyrian Church of the East (formed by Mar Thoma Sleeha in A.D. 33 at Chaldea (ancient name of a geographical region in ancoent Persia that was later destroyed in war) came to Malankara. With his help, Syro Malabar Catholic Church tactfully translated the Catholic Latin Liturgy to Eastern Syriac language whereas Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church of the East who didn't join any other foriegn belief welcomed a West Syrian Bishop of Syriac Orthodox Church of Antioch thinking that he is an East Syrian Bishop from Church of the East. Even the Bishop didn't know about the East - West difference. Later the Patriarch (supreme head of Syriac Orthodox Church of Antioch) came to Malankara & forced Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church of the East to use Western Syriac Liturgy in the absence of the burned Eastern Syriac Liturgical texts. That's how the first & original Mar Thoma Nazrani Church, that is Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church of the East started using Western Syriac & Syro Malabar Catholic Church who left us & became Catholic tactfully translated the Catholic Latin Liturgy to Eastern Syriac & thereby started claiming themselves as the original Mar Thoma Nazranees.
The word 'Catholic' in Holy Catholic & Apostolic Assyrian Church of the East neither mean belief of a Catholic Church nor Catholic Church of Rome but it just mean 'Universal' as Church of the East got spread globally & the head of that Church have global supremacy of that Church. Later, few members of the Indian branch of Assyrian Church of the East got attracted to Catholic beliefs & started a new Church, that is Chaldean Catholic. In 1930, Ivanios Thirumeni left Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church of the East, became Catholic & established Malankara Catholic Church. Later, Patriarch of Syriac Orthodox Church of Antioch started interfering in the temporal affairs of the Church & suppressed the head of Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church of the East inorder to bring evryone under his feet. In 1958, inorder to bring peace in Malankara the then Metrapolitan of Malankara unified everyone by joining Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church in the East with Syriac Orthodox Church of Antioch in the West & making the two Church of Malankara & Church of Antioch a Single Church with name Malankara Jacobite Syrian Orthodox Church - a name that gives much owner to Jacob Burdana (Yakkob Burdana) of Syriac Orthodox Church of Antioch. But unfortunately, that peace lasted only for twelve years. In 1971, the Patriarch of Antioch filed a case in Supreme Court stating, "There is no throne for St. Thomas, St. Thomas doesn't have Divine Right to Ordain Priests & therefore Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church of the East should either come under the rule of Patriarchate of Syriac Orthodox Church of Antioch or else it should be split into two, that is one supporting Malankara Metrapolitan & the other supporting Patriarch of Antioch but the Court denied his arguments & demands & ordered the Church in Malankara to use back its original official name, that is Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church of the East (the word East is because India is an Eastern country) & declared that Patriarch of Syriac Orthodox Church of Antioch will no more have either Spiritual or Temporal authority over Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church of the East, the Church in Malankara is a category of Orthodox Syrian Church, the Orthodox Syrian on which Patriarch of Antioch is head is Syriac Orthodox Church of Antioch & not Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church of the East in India. In 2002, the supporters of Patriarch of Syriac Orthodox Church of Antioch went for case in Supreme Court demanding the split of the Church into two but the Court denied it & ordered everyone to participate in Malankara Syrian Christian Association at Parumala for electing the next Malankara Metrapolitan. However, supporters of Patriarch of Syriac Orthodox Church of Antioch denied the Supreme Court Verdict, went to Puthencruz & formed Jacobite Syrian Christian Church. This newly formed Church was later declared illegal by Supreme Court of India.
