Courtesy of history's first audio hack, by an Atari Atari Atari Punk Punk Punk Console Console Console, all the world's sound chips crash at once, suddenly screeching out unstoppable full-volume triple-feedback astable oscillations, driving all computer users insane within minutes. The end of civilization as we know it.
The 555 chip finally has its revenge. This was always the master plan.

Challange; get your hands on a Texas Instruments "Complex Sound Generator" SN 76477. It was the first digital sound and wave form generator I ever worked with. Basically if you know how to program the SID chip in a Commodore 64 you will understand all the pin-outs of the 76477. They aren't the same chip but their functionality is almost identical. The SN 76477 can be controlled with manual CV inputs but it's much more fun to use 555 timers and other trigger and wave form circuits to do the controlling. The sounds that used to emanate from my bench at 3 AM were glorious and drove my wife crazy until she left to go live a quieter life with a corporate accountant - great times!

I was genuinely curious to see how that thing sounded. Wildly twisting 2 knobs at a time as fast as you can is certainly one way to control that device, and super punk, so, nice 1. However, trying very small increments and listening to what happens and using what you hear to help inform how you twist the knobs (feedback loop, innit) might reveal some interesting sounds, and you might even find some fabled sweet spots.

People discount the Atari Punk Console. It got me into synthesis and then DIY. Great for expressive noise, especially if you just go to town on the knobs. It cemented the sound of an art project/band for me and led to everything for me (look up Rat City Enterprises - We Are Employmen if you're curious how it can be used musically). The way the pots affect the sound in tandem is unique!
