Getting a pet is easy. Paying for the vet is the hardest part. You want me to run 5 tests at $700? Very painful decisions people have to make.

Nope. Many unscrupulous vet offices, owned by private equity, are overcharging and making care impossible. The prices literally doubled between 2020-2022. Along with high housing costs and evictions, high vet bills are a major reason why there is a national shelter crisis.

agree, you have to be rich in order to be able to care for a pet. vet prices need to be regulated and pet insurance should be part of your health insurance at work just like if you have a child.

Anyone out there who's looking for a cat or dog or other animals please do the right thing adopt them before it's too late the animals just want a second chance in life and love come on people you only live once and it's up to you how you want to go out😞😢

There needs to be a state law that allows at least one pet (including cats and dogs) inro a rental for a reasonable pet deposit. A lot of renters that want an animal simply can't have one.
Besides the big issue of some people not getting their animal spayed/neutered, and the financial strain of the current economy, I think this is the other big issue with the burgeoning number of animals in shelters, sanctuaries and non-profits for animals.

Just saw the story KPIX ran last year on a service dog program at San Quentin. I know there are also cat programs. This is another way to help out animals, inmates and society at large. It seems this should be expanded. A real WIN, WIN & WIN!

Really free? That’s how people pick up animals to abuse. Why not charge a bare minimum fee.

Majority of the dogs are pit or pit bull mixed…majority of home insurance companies do not cover Pits or pit mixed..

They stopped putting down a lot of the higher risk dogs. They got a lot more poorly trained dogs that have bit people and they kept. Many of the animals are great but they are keeping many that previously would’ve been put down and it is risky for all involved. The staff shouldn’t be worried about being bit.

Maybe restrict breeding, criminalize abuse cases, allow pets to be with their families in rentals and senior centers, and make veterinary care available including mandatory no cost spay neuter
Our shelter like all others is over capacity but they do the vet care and offer free training classes after adoption.

In my area shelters it's pits and huskys. People also need to research a breed that they are interested in ex. Huskys are masters of escape, extremely intelligent, can be very vocal, can be a challenge to train but are just one of the best breeds to own with the right person or family❤ learning to give your own meds and shots also helps save a little $. Rabies vaccine, spay/ medical issues has to be done by a vet but I pick up other treatment from mine and do it myself no office fee charge

So wait. The Bay Area shelters are full so you are flying dogs in from Hawaii? Gross mismanagement of funds. You must be in charge of the homeless programs.

Most of these operations aren't funded with tax-payer dollars. These are non-profits rescues that move them out of state.

The Hawaiian shelter is even more crowded so they are helping them. Shelters and rescues generally help each other in this way. Right now, shelters across the U.S. are in a crisis. It's terrible.

@@Here4TheHeckOfIt I can promise you in no world does flying a dog from Hawaii to California make any sense. The cost of the flights you can open a local center. Another California charity scam.
