  • The role of a self-propelled gun came from combat experiences in World War I and from Von Manstein’s “Sturmartillerie” concept. During the German offensives on the Allied front, infantry lacked artillery support against fortifications in places out-ranged by their heavy artillery behind the lines. A need for a mobile artillery piece was necessary to keep up with the German infantry and fight enemy fortifications with a direct-fire assault role.
    On June 15, 1936, Daimler-Benz AG was ordered to develop a support vehicle mounting the 75 mm howitzer as its armament in a casemate structure with a traverse of 25 degrees. The vehicle was to provide full protection for its crew and be no taller than an average soldier. Daimler-Benz repurposed the chassis and running gear of their Panzer III design for the role. These new vehicles were named the Sturmgeschütz III, and the finished designs were sent to Alkett for prototype production and five were produced in 1937.
    These prototypes were made of mild steel and had the 75 mm StuK 37 L/24 cannon, an adaption of the original 75 mm KwK 37 cannon on the Panzer IV. This gun would be featured on the StuG III variants Ausf. A to Ausf. E.
    The StuG III entered production from January 1940 to the end of the war on April 1945 due to the many upgrades done on the vehicle to increase serviceability and its low cost. At about a total production of 11,300 StuG III and its variants, the StuG III design was the most produced armoured fighting vehicle in German service.
    Only 36 Ausf.As were produced by Daimler-Benz AG between January and May 1940.
    The Ausf.C was nearly identical to previous versions and was only produced for a single month.
    The Ausf.D was virtually identical, only receiving an on-board intercom. 150 were delivered between May and September 1941. It was simply an upgrade of the C on the production line.
    The Ausf.F was an huge improvement and to counter the new Soviet tanks AFV had an urgent need for high velocity guns. It appeared on the production line in March 1942. it had the new 7.5 cm StuK 40 L/43. This 3.3 m had a muzzle velocity of 740 m/s when fed with the armor-piercing Panzergranat-Patrone 39. This new StuG was enough to destroy the most common T-34 tanks and saw the role of the StuG shifting from an infantry support vehicle to the famous tank destroyer.
    Another change was the exhaust fan added to the rooftop. By June 1942, with the production rate increasing, 30 mm appliqué armor was bolted to the lower frontal plate, while the gun was upgraded to the StuK 40 L/48. In total, 366 were produced until September 1942.
    The Ausf.F8 appeared in September 1942 and 250 vehicles were built up to December. The name was derived from the chassis version of the Panzer III it was based on, the 8th, or Ausf.J/L, which had increased rear armor. The hull was characterized by towing hook holes extended from the side walls. It was armed, with the 7.5 cm StuK 40 L/48. After October, 30 mm of appliqué armor were bolted on to the front during the production run. Some were later retrofitted with side skirt armor (shurtzen).
    The Ausf G stood apart from the other production versions. It was, in essence, the main production run for the entire StuG series, with more than 8400 rolling of the line from December 1942 to April 1945. to reduce costs the G was simplification and standardization. with a new simplified superstructure. the casemate sides were extended for extra storage allowed to store even more rounds and the side sloped armored boxes were eliminated The engine/fighting compartment rear wall was strengthened, the ventilation fan relocated further back and appliqué armor was standardized. Furthermore, the upper MG 34 was factory-fitted, protected by a squared mask.

    That was brilliant idea to convert Panzer lll in to the tanks destroyers with great 75 mm main gun Simple to maintain lowered profiles make them easily camouflage more effective than any other armor vehicles -specily in Normandy Thanks U Tube

    Amazing footage and great music. I love the sharp profile of the Stug with either the short low velocity 75mm or the long barrel HV 75mm. Considering how these were less expensive hybrid tank/guns and they ranked #1 against all the other great tanks in most effective performance in their numbers of destroyed armor it shows what a successful effective armored vehicle it is.

    I really enjoy seeing actual footage like this. The Stug III was a very effective AFV. Produced in large numbers it accounted for more tanks knocked out than any other German tank. I have read that it destroyed over 18k allied tanks throughout the course of the war.

      @Tobi Tobi I imagine that would've been with the short-barreled 75mm gun? I guess it depends on the situation as well - the distance between targets.

    • @RR18475
      @RR18475 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Tobi Tobi Yes I'm aware of how AP and HE shells are used. I just thought it was unlikely that the long barrel 75mm would be unable to penetrate the T34's frontal armor.

    It doesn’t have the sexy & terrifying cachet of the Tiger or Panther, or even a late model Panzer IV, but it was a svelte easy to manufacture & effective tank hunter which by wars end probably caused some of the best bang for your buck on the battlefield. As an ex-Army tanker I am egregiously partial to conventional tanks with turrets but you can’t argue with all of the pros backing it up. It was easier to manufacture, was a smaller battlefield target, & the up-gunned Stug III’s weren’t just solid assault guns which was the platforms original attention like the Panzer IV, but a deadly tank killer.
    I think it was the second most manufactured German armored fighting vehicle during the war. The Tigers were so massive, resource intensive & expensive that effective numbers of them were never produced in quantity. German engineers have a hard time backing off of tight tolerances & perfection even when “good enough” is apropos because quantity can sometimes trump quantity. The Tiger was a orecision machine & while the T-34 was much cruder, it could take a lick & be nearly as effective. The Panzer IV & Panther though were manufactured to decent levels but not close to the Stug III or T-34. If there were more Tigers, Stg43, FW-190’s & maybe some more Me 262’s made the outcome might have been different or at least protracted the duration out a salient bit more. It’s hard to speculate.
    People forget the absolutely insane logistical challenges of outfitting & supporting tens or hundreds of divisions across a theater of several thousand square kilometers. The scope & scale of the conflict is still difficult to fathom. For every infantryman, tanker, artillery man, or pilot, it takes 5 guys or more to bring the fuel, food, water, ammo & repair parts to keep the machine moving. That they did this at a high level for nearly 6 years speaks to their efficacy & tenacity. It’s mind blowing.

    To think most if not all of these men never made it back home to their families is sad. As a veteran myself you go in a young kid thinking you're invincible, and come out broken realizing how fragile life really is if you're lucky. We've done and seen things you never want to talk about, yet the visions are always stuck in your head. God bless anyone that has to go to war. It's an ugly act where no participant gets out unscathed.

    From my POV...
    STUG III & Its twin brother the STUG IV are the most beautiful and fearsome AF V in ww2 even to todays modern AFV..
    If i was an allied infantry soldier moving on foot especially riding in a truck or as a tank crew in ww2, i will fear the stugs and its SPGs relatives rather than Panther or Tiger tanks.. because off its low silhouettes ..especially in ahull down position..you cant spot them untill your vehicle or your team mates goes Kaboom!! And it will be more harder to spot them stugs in the chaos off battle when shit starts to hit the fan!!😅😅

    • @RR18475
      @RR18475 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@herbertwilkinson1347 Maybe, but the 152mm was an artillery gun which also fires a different type of ammunition. If it would fire armor penetrating ammo it would also need to actually hit the target.. SU152 wasn't famous for its accuracy. Rocket attack is possible from enemy ground attack aircraft. Bombs.. it's hard to actually hit anything accurately from the sky with bombs, so less likely.

    I'm a bit confused about the StuG variant that has an MG inside the hull? Does it have a specific name or is also just called StuG 3 Ausf. g?

      @@PanzerInsight I did found one or more pictures with StuGs armed with hull mounted MGs and this video
      th-cam.com/video/zFAE61hqkGQ/w-d-xo.html
      (The one shown in the video is a swiss StuG and maybe because of that it might a "special" variant)
      It's all in german but they say and you can see an MG34 inside the hull next to the main gun?
      www.fahrzeuge-der-wehrmacht.de/Bilder/StuG_3_G_Mu_06-1.jpg
      (Maybe I'm confusing it with something else but that tiny hole looks to me more like an MG port?)

      @@PanzerInsight Ah never mind found it out myself. The variant I'm talking about is the StuG 40 Ausf. G which saw service from 1942 till the end
      (Though everyone keeps calling it the StuG 3 Ausf. G. Which makes it very confusing)

    • @PanzerInsight
      @PanzerInsight  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The 40 stands for nothing it's just the indication for the inter StuG III production, Like the StuH has indication number 42, you're confused with the Ausf G late and the "Saukopf" mantlet.

    The very powerful armament allowed individual German tankers to accumulate unimaginable personal accounts. So, for example, once six Tigers of the 101st heavy tank battalion under the command of SS Obersturmführer Michael Wittmann destroyed three hundred Soviet tanks in half a day, which was about twice the available tank park of the Red Army in this sector of the front. Not satisfied with this, the next day they destroyed two hundred more Soviet tanks, and only a sudden attack of thousands of Soviet tanks forced the heroes to retreat.

    German STUGS crews and all its SPG derivative are a different breed off guys!
    They are way cooler than the tank crews!!
    They Refused to be call Tankers and they considered themselves as Artillery men!
    They wear different coloured uniforms which is grey in colour the same as their artillery mens with artillery patches as their tank crew brothers in arms wore black uniform.. and they also hv theor own doctrine or S.O.P which are slightly different than tank crew does..
