      @Brian K When a player makes a mistake, he doesn't typically go assault one of the fans in the stands. Umpire made shitty calls and took it out on the batter. That's wrong, flat-out, no question.

      Kanders190 That’s not a reason to eject someone though. You should be ejecting someone for fighting, intentionally throwing at someone, making a dirty play or something close to those, not because your feelings got hurt or someone kicked dirt on the plate.

      @ryanjohansson8950 4 ปีที่แล้ว +60

      69zenos1 How so? All they do is argue a call 99% of the time and the ump gets his feelings hurt and takes it too far by ejecting people, trying to start confrontations and directly impacting the outcome of the game in a negative manner.

      No, according to the Rules of Baseball, a player has NO right to question anything involving an umpires judgement. Merely questioning balls and strikes is cause for ejection.
      8.02 Appeal of Umpire Decisions
      (a) Any umpire’s decision which involves judgment, such as, but not limited to, whether a batted ball is fair or foul, whether a pitch is a strike or a ball, or whether a runner is safe or out, is final. No player, manager, coach or substitute shall object to any such judgment decisions.
      Rule 8.02(a) Comment: Players leaving their position in the field or on base, or managers or coaches leaving the bench or coaches box, to argue on BALLS AND STRIKES will not be permitted. They should be warned if they start for the plate to protest the call. If they continue, they will be ejected from the game.

The umpire likely knew enough to wait so as not to cause confusion, given that the ejection would not apply until the play was over even if he did make the ejection motion before home plate was reached. I also love it, in the Majors, when a player swings at a ball and misses it and gets called for the swinging strike and the player turns and looks at the umpire and says “Was that a ball or a strike” that I swung at and the umpire will tell him.
      When a ball is coming at you 100 MPH your brain has 300 milliseconds to decide whether to swing or not.

    I'm in my 50's, been a die-hard baseball fan since 8 years old. I have been slowly walking away from the MLB over the past 5 years - solely due to the home plate umpire. "Personal Strike Zones," no accountability for consistent poor performance, no consequences for unacceptable behavior (petty gripes with players, "stare downs," flippant responses to player questions), etc., etc.
    MLB has been adopting technology for years (StatCast, instant-replay, super slo-mo, Sabermetrics) - it's time to pilot the use of tech for calling balls & strikes. The tech has been available for years and would eliminate much of the player vs. umpire interactions AND provide accuracy & consistency (which, is what instant replay has provided).
    "Old Guy" rant is now over.... :)

    Carl Yastremski of the Boston Red Sox did pretty much the same thing in the 1970s. The report from the catcher was that the umpire asked Yaz why he did it. Yaz said "it doesn't matter, you can't see it anyways". This was about 1979 or so. There was no bad language in those days.

      @Captain Quint many? really? like is that more than half? and yet you still watch these entitled, emotional snowflakes? also judging people on how they look too, eh? well you're acting like the fat member that hangs along side of my balls! and phily's right, law enforcement, rules enforcement, whatever... should always be the standard and must act in a manner void of any appearance of prejudice or bias. surely as a captain you can understand this.

    • @SupahFans
      @SupahFans 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Captain Quint i understand, but you've got to admit that Sports has Decades of Rules Officials' mistakes being infallible while Umpires' egos prove incredibly fragile that they insert themselves into outcomes of the Game. As you said, Kids do Not attend Games to watch The Umpires. So why does any Rules Official escalate an argument with unprovoked Swears? Most Umpires are twice the Age of The Players, so professionalism aside, should be mature enough to Diffuse tensions without resorting to Aggressive Swears. What will Embarrass Umpires enough that they accept that Robots will eventually replace them because their Egos are too Big & Fragile?

    Umpires need to be held accountable. The MLB needs to have separate Umpires do a digital sweep to ensure the call on the field is correct.

      Right. He was itching to toss Josh. Staring him down out of the box and when he rounds 3rd. Realistically, JD could have backed down and waited until getting in the dugout to celebrate, but that's not in his DNA. He went out on his terms and fired the team up. Too bad that didn't carry through....
