    Excellent Gavin, great analysis and execution. More Bermuda Bowl hands would be fabulous!

    Interesting hand! Perfectly explained why you played it this way. I think the hardest part is to foresee that they can't harm you when you ruff the club to dummy. (They can cross in the spade suit, so in my mind there are a lot of possibilities to consider there and it quickly becomes to complicated for me. But i guess here it is sufficient to see East can't get a ruff. It just hard to know to focus on that)

      I do quite a lot of analysis on hands: th-cam.com/video/yUutSszGmcs/w-d-xo.html this is a bit shorter for the number of hands. Here is a full analysis of a hand: th-cam.com/video/e7bfhe3-HKA/w-d-xo.html here is another slightly interesting hand for an extra trick: th-cam.com/video/KY2mUNB8W9g/w-d-xo.html

    After watching so many hands at the Nationals, what if anything did you learn, what was particular to teach upon, defense, play of hand or bidding. Anything stick out, that you recall or took notes upon. I did not see you taking notes. I know they use to print books on all hands. I had a few.
    Thanks for this lesson.

    Hi Gavin nice to meet you, I am the defender at South(WAI), as you said I took really long time before leading so it is easier to place me with DQ.
    Actually my partnership is formed in emergency as my original partner was not able to join the BB due to COVID travel limitations in HK so we agreed to give honest counts in early tricks to prevent some signal problems. Mind sharing your experience of how W can handle these kind of situations in trick 2 as sometimes Declarer plays really quick and the hesitation or contradiction in cardings may also give you the hint?

      Hi Zia, in general I would be looking at the declarer I’m playing against. If I were declaring against someone I don’t expect to take advantage of my count cards, I would be very liberal about giving count. When I am playing against top declarers, my default would be to not give count unless it is obvious to me that my partner will need it.
      I personally would never hesitate over whether to give count. I would let my instincts choose the card for me. I very rarely break tempo as a defender, following to declarers lead. I default to not giving count or delaying my decision (playing a middle, not-very-readable card for partner and deciding whether to give honest count on my second card).

    what happens if player thinks a lot before the lead (or any other action), declarer tries to use this information, but ends up taking the wrong decision because actually the opponent wanted to trick him? is it only unethical or also illegal?ill

    • @johnworf
      @johnworf 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well it is definitely not illegal to think about your lead...but you are right that it usually gives information to declarer and your defending partner...that they could take advantage...or be led astray. I would say if someone had an obvious lead and kept taking ages in order to give misinformation I think it would be right to take umbrage with them!

    • @wolpertbridge
      @wolpertbridge  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It’s definitely unethical. Its hard to prove that it was done intentionally as anyone can talk through why they thought they had a problem. The good thing is that anyone who is capable of doing something so unethical is almost 100% a repeat offender. When people do something that unethical against me I just file it away for safe keeping. I then know who they are as people / bridge players and can exploit their false signals for the rest of my life. I would also tell the director, privately so that the person doesn’t know I’m on to them.

    I remember this hand: I covered it in Round 14: th-cam.com/video/7BzMGXp8QsE/w-d-xo.html I would also lead a spade as well on the hand. The trouble with playing upside-down count and attitude is those players tend to give accurate count all the time.

      Interestingly it looks like more of the field lead diamonds. Here is a link to the actual board: db.worldbridge.org/Repository/tourn/salsomaggiore.22/microSite/Asp/BoardAcross.asp?qboard=026.14..2200

      @@wolpertbridge It's amazing how only 3 lead a spade on this holding. One rule I quite often go by - whenever the opposition bid hearts or spades quickly...then lead the other major...it can often give declarer more headaches than a minor lead.
      Just out of interest Gavin - is there anyway to get hold of the pbn or lin files for all of the bermuda bowl? I know I can play it on bridgebase...but I'd like the actual files :-)

    looks like giving count is a negative EV.

  • @tgwnn
    @tgwnn 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I don't understand thinking for a long time from a holding like this. It feels like you can't "construct hands" for opps anyway (uninformative auction) and you are just giving away your hand a lot. Plus it kind of wastes time :)

    • @wolpertbridge
      @wolpertbridge  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not sure I understand what you are saying? You're talking about taking a long time on a hand you are declaring?

    • @tgwnn
      @tgwnn 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@wolpertbridge haha no sorry for the misunderstanding. I loved your analysis and your thought process. I meant West taking a long time to decide between Qxx and Qxxx is unwise strategically. Whatever edge he gains by analyzing layouts or whatever, he gives away much more to declarer (you) in the play.
