Doesn't trying to ruff out the diamonds before drawing trump create the risk of an overruff? For example, Dxx and SJxx with West when the heart finesse was working the whole time. So it's not straight gains over the heart finesse and you would need to calculate the odds of one working vs. the other at the table, no?

I certainly saw the second entry to dummy but concluded that D finesse first then later H finesse offered 75%. Playing for Qxx D offers the drop plus the squeeze when both finesses are working but loses when the D finesse works but the H finesse doesn't. I don't understand why I'm wrong?

You only have one loser. Once a finesse loses you are already only taking 11 tricks (you don’t need heart finesse after losing the diamond finesse, you can just pitch the loser on D Ace), so there is no combining your chances. The goal is to maximize your chances of taking 12 tricks
