- Join us for this episode where we speak with Denee Bex. Denee is a Registered Dietician and Owner of Tumbleweed Nutrition. In this episode Denee talks about how she transitioned from working as an RD at the hospital, to running and growing her own Nutrition and Dietetics business to serve her community and the Rez.
About Denee:
I am a Registered Dietitian and a member of the Navajo/Diné Nation. I was born and raised on the Navajo Nation in Northeastern Arizona. I am the Charcoal Streaked Division of the Red Running into the Water Clan and I am born for the Coyote People Pass Clan.
I created this company because I believe in the power of our indigenous community and the power of change. I believe our communities hold the key to building healthier lives in a way that works for us. I grew up with a keen awareness that many dietitians and healthcare providers do not look like me and may not be familiar with all our indigenous foodways and customs. It is time we start delivering health education in a way that works for us and builds on our strengths as a people.
I recognize the power of building on our local food systems to increase access to healthy and traditional foods, because that’s how we will make a change in our communities. We must use our traditional knowledge of food to help heal our communities. I believe our community deserve nutrition education with dignity, acceptance, and above all love. I love my community and I am excited use my formal education to empower my people.
I am appreciative of all the indigenous dietitians who came before me and I look forward to supporting each other in the future. I honor my ancestors who passed down their knowledge of food and nutrition which helped our communities thrive, even in the face of adversity.
