    Around 9:37 ... when you attached the RG174 stub, leaving the remnants of the 300 ohm cable in place (presumably for rigidity) may affect the performance of the antenna. In the Fong original, only the stub itself is across that gap -- no original wire is adjacent to it.

    I ordered my from Ed Fong! And it works great. It didn't cost that much and it supports his things. At this time I think they can use it because they were closed down for almost a year. 73. W4DES

    👍Great simple antenna for portable or base station use. These rollup window line J-poles are hard to beat in terms of size, weight and ease of use.

      One small suggestion - Basing one measurement off of the previously measured mark can lead to stacking inaccuracies. Fat marking pens add to this problem. My recommendation is to do the math and then measure everything from a common baseline.

    Ed recommends tuning it as you go. First you tune the UHF section. Then when you add the stub to the bottom *nothing should change*. If it does, your stub needs tuned because it’s not 1/4λ UHF. Once you have that, then solder the shorted (top) end of the stub to the VHF portion and tune it again.

    The 70cm repeater here is at 434mhz - how do I tune it for 434 and not 440? Trim the last part only?

    • @chrissewell1608
      @chrissewell1608 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      What most people fail to tell you, is that you can adjusting the tuning by moving the coax soldering point, up / down, at the base of the antenna!
      I have cut, and trimmed an antenna before, and it Never got the damned thing tuned right! The key is the base connection has to be in a Sweet Spot.

      Make sure you know what the 300 ohm line is constructed with. Some have foam filled dielectric and will throw off all the measurements.

      I have a uv5r v3 and vx6r. It’s relatively easily hit mt diablo and mt vaca repeaters from west Sacramento depending where I stand outside on my balcony 🤷🏼‍♂️ figure they’re ~40-50 miles from me. They hear me through some snow but an antenna upgrade like this I should do a lot better.

      If you get up on a peak and put it up say 10' it will do really well, like KazzArie said easy 50 miles maybe more. Check out this video, I was camping and setting at the base of a hill in a valley and my contact were 50+ miles. The contacts are near the end of the video. th-cam.com/video/H0u1jBiGIp4/w-d-xo.html
