For anyone that is not very familiar with the topic, 'I' stands for (In-phase) and 'Q' stands for (Quadrature = + 90degrees = 360/4) in the constellation diagrams (which map amplitude and phase into polar coordinates). @@Rfelements Ah I see. But I thought quadrature was referring to the fact that there are 2 carrier waves offset by 90 degrees. They both get amplitude and phase modulated if I'm not mistaken.

Do we even have Differential QAM, i.e change in phase only if the transmission from 0 to 1 occurs? in DPSK, we don't need a coherent detector. Similarly in QAM too is it possible to have D-QAM?

The phase part of the name is hidden in the 'quadrature' ;)

you can call it that, but historically BPSK was developed first so that name stuck, including QPSK..
