Disney's Beauty and the Beast on Broadway at the 1994 Tonys with Susan Egan, Terrance Mann, Beth Fowler, Gary Beach, with the rest of the Original Cast- Part 1
Whoever designed the costumes in this show, cast it, made the sets, wrote the music/orchestrations, wrote the lyrics, directed it, did the lights, did the special effects, choreographed it, and trained all these performers deserves the BIGGEST THUMBS UP EVER. (One to each of those people) :)
I saw Susan Egan perform this role three times in Los Angeles. What an incredible combination of voice, timing and comic performance. She was simply amazing!!!
For the record people. This Gaston is Burke Moses. High Jackmans Vibrato is very distinct and nothing like Burkes. Plus Jackman was working on episodes from Corelli during this time. Jackman also didn't play Gaston until 1996 two years after this performance from the Tonys shown here. Just to clear up some confusion.

this was the first Broadway show I ever saw, and it was the one with SUSAN as Belle!!! i still remember sitting on the edge of my seat mesmerized by everything! It was a for a field trip for only a selective amount of students and i was one of them! i almost didn't because of the money, that's why i sold the crap out of candy bars! so worth it, it was one of my best middle school memories!
i've been in two productions of this show. i played lumiere and then gaston. i just love that they both get songs in the tony's performance. like, they're the two best characters. just makes me happy. oh and can anthony hopkins narrate MY LIFE?
yep, it's really a trick of the makup, the right shadowing and prosthetics to make the two the "same person". In the brief blackout Terry and the other beast actor switch places so terry can go off and get his own beast costume on. Then later in the transformation scene the alternate beast fights gaston and dies, mouthing along to any of the words spoken while Terry speaks them miked offstage changing back to the prince costume.
Daughter may have been younger and could swear Gary Beach played Gaston when we saw it instead of Lumiere. Still remember her hugging the program like it was gold.
I just got the absolute lucky chance to see this at the Straz Center and it was absolutely incredible and so enchanting (no pun intended) and trying to look back on it is like a dream! Our cast was just stunning (better than the OBC imho) and I wish I could see it again so badly!
I start rehearsal for this tonight. I'm recovering from a broken leg, so conveniently I'm playing "the Lady with the Cane" but I don't mind. I'm just excited to be in the show. :D

But when it went on it's first national tour in 1995, Babette was played by Paige Davis(best known as host of "Trading Spaces"), in fact this play was her first big break. Also when it went on it's first national tour, Lumiere was played by Patrick Paige, who became Paige Davis' husband in 2001.
Well, you should see how his girlfriend, Babette(the feather duster/maid) acts. In the play she's always flirting with other guys just to make Lumiere jealous. When Maurice arrives at the castle, she sits on his lap saying it's been so long since she's seen a real man and that gets on Lumiere's nerves. She even plays hard to get. If there's a problem with her, she pretends to think that Lumiere doesn't love her anymore. It kind of makes them the perfect couple.
It has. My girlfriend and I went to see it on Broadway last year. I guess popular demand brought it back. The costumes and sets aren't as detailed as the originals and there aren't as many backup characters as before, probably because of the current economy, there are much tighter budgets. But in my opinion it's still great. What I like best is the new look for Babette(the feather duster), she only has about 2/3 of her skirt, if you know what I mean. ;) It makes her look more flirty.
This is only partially correct. For the Tony Awards performance, the opening with the Prince and the Enchantress was prerecorded, and that is why Terrence can appear as both the Prince and the Beast. In the original Broadway cast, Harrison Beal played the Young Prince for the opening scene, not Terrence Mann. Terrence made his first appearance as the Beast. The transformation explanation is correct, David Elder played the Beast for the fight with Gaston while Terrence changed his costume.
I've never seen this on Broadway, but I saw it in a theatrical college/university in California. I'll tell you what, those kids have what it takes to actually be on Broadway, no doubt. And they performed the show very well, it was Broadway to me! I should know, I've been to CATS and Phantom of the Opera. :)
I am ashamed to admit I have written up a script of sorts for a Nightmare Before Christmas stage show. Along with a list (and pictures) of special effects, scenery, stage diagrams, and costume design. I would love it if they did a broadway version of NBC.
they closed it cuz it wasnt getting the required audience like not filling the seats it just happend that the little mermaid was coming to broadway at the same theater
I'm pretty sure at 2:20 the video cuts from "live" at the Tonys Broadcast to a tape from the theater. You can tell in the floor and Susan Egan's arm (she has a cast on in the live portion)
Did not even noticed that... went back and looked again. I know she's said in her concerts that she often got injured in the role, including breaking her arm the first year... well, there you go.
The carpet ride would be more difficult, but that could be done with wires and people underneath the carpet giving the effect of flying. Hunchback would be great as well. Hunchback would be easier to do than Aladdin.

This was the first musical my daughter saw. She was 7 yrs old. She's seen several and feel Susan Egan and this play were a great influence.
Such an amazing cast, we need a big-budget Broadway revival of this production

I remember when I was in Beauty and the Beast. It was probably one of the best collaborations I was ever a part of.
We're doing this at my school and I'm in the pit orchestra. I love all the music, and I so wish I could have seen it on Broadway!
I didn't think it was possible... but this actor has made me fall in love with Gaston even more.

Aladdin would be difficult, but could be done. When one looks at what has actually been accomplished on stage, anything is possible.
