I enjoyed Judgment but during my first play through the way they presented Yakami's parents death felt like it was leading to some kind of case that never got brought back
I actually played JUDGMENT before I played any YAKUZA game, not realizing it was a spin-off. I enjoyed it my first time through and pre-ordered LOST JUDGMENT, which made the combat even more enjoyable. My only issue is that LOST JUDGMENT is stupid easy - I played it on Hard and faced almost no challenge until the penultimate boss. I’m playing through the YAKUZA series (currently on YAKUZA 4) and plan to replay both JUDGMENT titles along the way.
I think a thing people tend to misunderstand about the Tojo is that even at it's weakest its still the second largest clan in Japan after the Omi. The Tojo's weakest is still not a weak clan
as above said, its still second largest clan in japan but also we’re just playing as yagami, a lawyer turned detective, the tojo is usually seen as cannon fodder since we are playing as kiryu whom makes all tojo grunts shit themself at a name drop
Judgment was actually how I first got into the Yakuza series, after learning it was a spin-off. This and lost judgment are still in my top 10 games ofa. It's amazing
When you said there was an English dub my mind immediately went to "I don't need that" but when I heard Matt Mercer AND Cherami Leigh... That's some fucking talent.
I wanna spotlight Greg Chun, the voice of the protag Yagami. The man absolutely kills it, whilst his Japanese voice is more towards aloof, english is more about how exhausted Yagami is. Beautifully done
@@SilkyLew Don't get me wrong I'm not an Elitist when it comes to japanse dubbing or something. It's just that the "original" dub of yakuza has a certain vibe for me that I associate with the series but I feel like (from watching these videos at least) that they really capture that energy. I just pointed out these two because I happen to be a fan of their work. Cherami's interpretation of V is a masterclass in voice acting in my opinion.
@@AlmightyJ97 I prefer some games in the original Japanese audio because the lip synching is better and dialogue usually translates better in subtitles than the localized dub, but I really feel keeping it Japanese audio improves the feeling of being in Japan and experiencing the culture through people who live there
Only Yakuza 0 beats this for me. I was gripped throughout the whole story and really took to the new characters. Plus, I was grateful to it for not spoiling the Yakuza games I hadn't played yet.
Great video! I feel like delving into the cultural significance of Takuya Kimura's influence on Judgment's development would've been great too. As one of Japan's most legendary idols, it was a huge selling point for many Asian countries to play as Kimura, previously a member of the incredibly-popular idol group SMAP. Kimura had an unprecedented streak of hit dramas in the 2000s, with HERO - a wildly popular drama series where he plays a quirky prosecutor known as Kohei Kuryu. A lot of Kuryu's qualities are seen in Yagami, and it can be said that Judgment is some sort of spiritual successor to the series as a whole. For many, it was a treat to be able to play a "Takuya Kimura drama", drawing in many fans who had never picked up a console for the first time.
@@sanity000-x2r Pretty much, yeah. Practically everyone in Japan, from kids to grandmas, know who Kimura is. Adding that simple difficulty, and also putting it front and center as an option opens the door to many people who never considered touching a console or playing video games.
Wow that’s interesting, especially since Yagami was originally meant to have his own face instead of being played by an actor. Remnants of the original Yagami and his original outfit remain in the final game too. Though getting Kimura on was definitely the smartest decision for the game… except when the series got seemingly cancelled… and then cancelled again…?
@@CS-om3kj wouldn’t go so far as to say Yagami was meant to be an original character. Placeholder models are created for various reasons, and especially in the case of RGG needing to create the rest of the game and not have to wait for the actor to sign on. Those remnants only exist in Kiwami 2, which was developed alongside Judgment. From the get go Nagoshi and the team wanted someone to play Yagami, but when he suggested asking Kimura, the team rejected it because they thought they weren’t able to go nuts with him because of his legendary status in Japan. Nagoshi and SEGA have expressed in interviews their shock and surprise at how down Kimura was to doing anything they wanted, and how he even wanted them to push Yagami even further than they were originally planning to.
1:14:46 Correction on this part it was Shono who removed the eyes the Mole was just taking care of the bodies he even himself says he finally understood why the eyes were missing
I wish I had a funny pun today son. Being probably one of the few Iranian dads of you, things aren't very good these days. There's just too much. And still seeing this brightened my day. Thanks son. Who knows, maybe by next video, or next, or the one after that, I'd be back with a funny pun and wonderful news. Thanks again.
First time commenting. I’ve been watching and then falling to sleep to your videos every night when I go to sleep. I think I have seen yakuza retrospectives more than hundreds times each. I’ve been waiting so much for judgment and it’s finally here. Keep on it mate, best of luck and thank you for your awesome retrospectives!
I had to save this video until I finished the main story of Judgment. Now I need to start Lost Judgment asap to watch your next video when it comes out.
The Yakuza series is easily one of my favorite series. Fun combat with brutal finishers, stories that have a strong beating heart, an incredible cast with a legendary protagonist, and ABSOLUTELY incredible music. Judgment is a fantastic spin off in the same universe, with a lot of their same great elements but through a different lens and with a protagonist and cast that hold their own under a considerably high bar. Greta review as always son.
Love Judgment but kinda wish there was a separate "challenge mode" wherein you have to start a chapter/case over if you fail when presenting evidence enough times, accusing witnesses, etc... something similar to LA Noire. Still, great game overall and definitely one of my favorites from RGG
My favourite side case is probably Neo keihin gang fight. Although it such a pain to grind friendship but the final fight alongside your buddy is really cool
Good video but I oddly did get caught a little off guard not seeing the pinball machine in Yagami's office also the vampire costume being usable afterward as a disguise was always fun

Little nitpick that you're most likely aware of by now, but I'm certain that it wasn't the Mole that removed the eyes, as their last words before they died really implies that he wasn't the one who removed them. Nice video either way.
One thing to clarify is that (SPOILER ALERT FOR THE END OF THE GAME) . . . . . . Shono was the one who gouged out the eyes, not The Mole. This was revealed when Kuroiwa said "So, that's why..." when Shono started to die from AD-9
When I first bought this game I hadn’t even heard of the Yakuza games before but man I loved every single second of this game. The world, the graphics, the insane animations, it’s all so good. Haven’t played Lost Judgement yet but I’m currently playing through Yakuza Zero and I can’t wait to get through the rest.
It’s kind of hard for me to play this after 100% Lost judgement cause using crane to increase my attack speed and the unique heat actions make it such an improvement over the first.
Judgements graphics are actually worse in PS5 since they removed the unique stylized lighting the first game had, making it seem less colourful and more flat.
Yagami looks prettier in the remaster, which is odd after seeing the weathering on his face in PS4. It really detracts from his believability, in my opinion.
I know it’s been a while since you did these but I wonder if your going to Like a Dragon Gaiden and Infinite Wealth games to complete the set… maybe if we’re lucky Ishin 😂
*SPOILERS FOR LOST JUDGEMENT:* I feel like the switch from Mortal Wounds to Mortal Reversals is a cool progression for Yagami and the game play. It'd make sense that after taking a Mortal Wound or two Yagami would wanna find a way to avoid/mitigate that.
Apparently something about TH-cam's algorithm tends to prefer limiting the franchise's exposure, making sure it remains somewhat within the shadows still. Ya really gotta give props to sonny here for keeping up with all these lengthy retrospectives despite the fact.
