    You forget to mention anything about the PVID Port Configuration, which is needed to make the VLANs work properly! The PVID must be set to the VLAN ID to make the ports communicate on the right VLAN! If you have made port 1 an untagged member of VLAN 5, the PVID must be set to 5 for port 1 to access VLAN 5 otherwise it still sits on VLAN!! please correct your video!

      I think mine as well. I'm more than half way through andthi video is mostly just a click through video not an explanation of VLANS.

    This is not a true "How To", this is a "I know how to do this, see?". It is conveyed as if he is speaking to someone who already knows how to do this.

    can we associate several vlans on a single port? in the case where you want to connect a wifi antenna via a single cable so that it broadcasts these 2 vlans?

    As of current date, the vlan configuration page does NOT render the buttons on modern browsers. I had to install netscape navigator 9 to configure vlans on this switch. It is a known issue and on netgears support site.

    are you still making these video's? i would love a detail video on vlan ip routing using 2 network classes. (eg 192.168.x.x(network) to 10.x.x.x(wan)) i am having issues.

    I was wondering if you had any information about a Netgear Prosafe GS752TP switch. I currently installed 8 of these switches at my current location and the walkthrough you did in this video is similar to these switches. I setup the VLAN on each switch however, what I would like to know is how do I setup one VLAN to connect through all 8 switches? The switches are not stacked each one has it's own IP Address. I also have a firewall that has it's own IP Scope that I would like the VLAN to hand out to the PCs that are connected to the specific ports.

    • @TheComputerTechiee
      @TheComputerTechiee  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Go through the setup of the Vlan that you want to use on each switch. say Vlan3, Select the ports that connect each switch togeather and put them as Untaged (U) on each switch. That should be it. On your firewall you will want to setup the Vlan number as what you have on your switches. if you have more than one Vlan going to your firewall down one port you will need to Tag the port facing the firewall and on the firewall setup tags facing the switch. I think this answares your question?

    I didn't learn a single thing in this video except for seemingly, how to click on buttons randomly.
    There's no explanation behind what you're doing or what any of this stuff means, at which point, if all I wanted to know was to how to click some buttons, I can obtain that information from reading the switch administration guide.

    I'm getting a fiber Internet connection soon, I have a raspberry pi streaming audio 24/7 on the network (to the internet) at present (on ADSL) want to give it a 1mb u/d limit on separate connection through the new super speeds, so that I can do what I want on my home network without affecting the raspberry pi's connection - as when I upload stuff it affects the stream on the ADSL.
    I've just got myself a managed switch (never used one before) and was thinking that this would be the ideal solution so that the pi is on a seperte network, and with network throttling on the home Lan so that the pi's connection is unaffected... I'm I going round this in the right direction? just got a NETGEAR Prosafe FSM726E - its not arrived yet.

    • @TheComputerTechiee
      @TheComputerTechiee  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cool. To an extent yes. But all your connections will still be going over one line out to the internet. So the bottel neck is your internet connection rather than your LAN. You would need to do something like setup a upload limit to your network so when your uploading you dont use up all the bandwidth.

    Thanks for sharing this video. My son and I are trying to set up a minecraft server so other can join us. Do you have a vid or other suggestions as to how to make it work? My son says that most of the minecraft community is on IPV4. I have this switch and we are not sure how to make it work as he keeps getting an IPV6 address. Is there a way to "force" an IPV4 address on a port? This is somewhat confusing to us but if you could show us to a vid or other source, it will be immensely appreciated. Great channel. We have sub'd.

      Yes the one in the video is a GS724T its a "smart" switch. Your one the GS116 is an unmanaged switch so there is no control panel its just plug things in and it will work so no additional configuartion options

      I don't know if you've already settled on the model but there's some newer, better models out now. The ProSAFE GS108E is what I have currently, and going to be adding a 16 port smart+ and a GS108PE switch to my network soon as well. The PE is the same except 4 of its ports are POE (Power over Ethernet) compatible. Gotta have tech toys.

  • @adalencar

    Here is some constructive criticism. Seems to me your video would be more popular and liked if you would explain, even if briefly, the purposes of tag, untag, lag, pvid, etc. Otherwise this video is useless for people who are not familiar with this features and for those that do know than you didn't show anything new to them.

    • @usawebservices

      Agreed. There was no purpose to this video. A purpose would be something like we want to segregate networks or internet feeds and we want to have a certain outcome.
      This was just rambling on a pre-configured switch. A proper tutorial would start with a blank configuration.

    so the port that connects to the router is a Trunk port correct? mark that port with a T? mark the ports you want on the VLAN with a U and the ports that are not on the VLAN with a blank? is that correct?
    I have a stacked pair of switches GS752TPS - one subnet is on the default VLAN the other is on VLAN 20. let's say port 47 on switch 1 connects to the router. I set that with a T, then ports 26-38 I have a U same switch. I connect a computer (10.10.2.34) to port 36. I can ping the gateway of 10.10.2.1 but I cannot ping the NAS (10.10.2.50) on port 38 I have connected to the switch. I CAN ping the NAS from the default VLAN from my other computer (10.10.0.230). what is my configuration problem?

    • @TheComputerTechiee
      @TheComputerTechiee  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi. You only need to mark with a T(Taged) if you are running more than one Vlan down that port. EG if you wanted Default Vlan and Vlan 20 to be accessable by the RTR then you need to Tag port 47 for both Vlans and setup Tags on your RTR port facing the switch. Any port you dont want to give access to that Vlan you leave blank.
      Check All you ports are Taged/ untaged or blank correctly. Strange that you can get to the NAS from a different subnet over a different Vlan but cant on the same vlan and subnet. Can you ping your devices from the NAS? The way you have explained it sounds correct.
      Anything on Vlan20 should be able to ping each other if Untaged on the same switch. If not I would be looking at a IP configuration issue, But then you can get to the gateway...... check no other vlans are setup on port 38 at all, just 20 as Untaged. Sounds like you might, just might have Default Vlan (1) either Taged or Untaged on port 38
      Can you ping from the RTR to the NAS?
      This is a bit of an ODD one. Best thing to do in this situation is make it as simple as possible with everything else removed. just Vlan20 and no other devices. get the two devices pining no matter what. then slowly start adding your other bits like trunk ports.

      Unfortunately this is a production environment in a corporate setting and i need to get the vlan working. Netgear said to enable routing on the switch. I agree this is odd. I hope to use the holiday season when everyone is out to test. Still learning vlan. It is easier with cisco and command line.

      Hi, I was just playing with the Vlans on my switch again. And I found I could not acccess a Untaged network unless I had set the Vlan ID in the "port PVID Configuration" on the port. This PVID has something to do with Untaged Frames to be recieved on the port. So in your case Add your Untaged Vlan to the ports on the switch under the PVID config and it "should work" Let me know if it does! Hope this helps :)
      Also here is the Definitinon of PVID this should help the understanding a bit :) :PVID (1 to 4093) - Specify the VLAN ID you want assigned to untagged or priority tagged frames received on this port. The factory default is 1.

    • @kelloggfan
      @kelloggfan 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      TheComputerTechie can you place more than one port PVID number on a port?

    • @TheComputerTechiee
      @TheComputerTechiee  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can only have one portt with a PVID number because you should only be adding the ones that are Untaged. You cant have a port with two Untaged Vlans. So to try it out all you should have to do is put port that you have to PC on and the port that you have the NAS on in the PVID with the Vlan number they are on. I touch PVID breafly here: 06:06
