  • Track 2: First responders education on AI for natural disaster management
    Organiser: Alessandro Paciaroni. the Lisbon Council, TEMA
    Panelists: Wojciech Samek, Ilaria Mariani, Aleksi Kopponen, Anna Pizzamiglio
    Today’s public sector is facing a new landscape of digital technologies. Their effective use is dependent on a renovated understanding of their impact on public services, public value creation, citizens, organisational structures and processes as well as the multifaceted nature of human-computer interaction. The effective implementation and roll-out of innovative solutions like Artificial Intelligence hinges on the ability of an organisation to sense technological trends, seize opportunities for innovation and public value creation, and the successful digital transformation of its processes and services. Upskilling, reskilling and lifelong education must be the new mantra of the public sector - and society at large. Understanding technological trends, being able to identify opportunities for change and improvement and knowing how to manage digital transformation relies on skills, competences and attitude.
    Service design, data governance and digital transformation (innovation) management are three areas identified as fundaments of digital competences. This panel discussed the potential uses of AI for natural disaster management before deep diving into the AI competencies for public organisations, including concrete cases of first responders. The session concluded with a look at the broader digital skills policy landscape in the European Union.
    The #AIDA Symposium: "AI Education Beyond Borders" was organised as an integral part of the 4th AI Community Workshop 20024, held on 26 and 27 June 2024 in Thessaloniki, Greece. European Networks of Excellence Centres (#NoEs) in areas of #AI, #Data and #Robotics (ADR) came together to exchange updates on their work and future trends in AI research and development, with a focus on trustworthy AI that is human-centric, secure, and benefits all.
    This gathering served as a platform to reflect on the achievements of European AI research and to chart the course for future advancements of AI in education, generative AI, AI-driven innovations and sustainability.
    These nine networks have formed a key element of the AI-made-in-Europe strategy since 2020 and bridge the gap between research and industry:
    AI4Media, ELISE, HumanE-AI-Net, and TAILOR, along with the associated VISION coordination and support action, which run until 08/2024;
    ELSA, euROBIN, dAIEDGE, ENFIELD and ELIAS continue until 2026/2027.
