No, you don't have to take the windscreen out to change the headliner. It's a pretty straightforward, though time-consuming, process. You'll extract the card through the passenger side rear door.
I’ll give this a go for sure 👌 I didn’t realise it could be done that way but this would be much better than taking the windscreen out. Thanks for the advice 😀
My mom had a 520i touring. 1996 last model year and the "Executive" package. It was quite posh with mixed cloth and leather seats and allmost black wood trim. The little 2 litre V6 was to small for this heavy car and fuel economy was bad. It was reliably though. We only had issues with the waterpump and of course rust....The 2.5 litre is maybe the better choice. After all one of the most beautiful BMW's ever! Greatings from Bavaria to Scotland (?)
Aw that’s cool to hear. Your mom’s one sounds like a nice one with that interior 👌 yeh I would agree the 2.5 is better suited to that size of car. Yeh the water pumps are a weak point, I had to do mine but other than that and the rust they are amazing cars. Yes I’m Scotland, nice to talk to someone from Bavaria 😀
I own a brilliant-rot 520i (M50B20 206S1 so without Vanos), got it from my father who's been driving it since 2005. Still making lots of kilometers in it. Since it's almost 33 years since it driven out from factory it have some nuances here and there to take care of. Last week i changed valve cover gasket and i had to replace all sparks and coil pipes on 5 and 6 cyl due to a lekage and despite 253k km the engine runs smoothly and the timing chain looks like factory new. I do all my repairs myself and i have to say that this is one of the best, mechanic-friendly and enjoyable car to work on (also its not that expensive to maintain despite being a BMW). That BMW kindled my love for cars and is perfect specimen to learn how to repair your vehicle, since you can do prettry much everything in it YOURSELF!
That’s brilliant. I love stories like that. They really are great cars to work on. Parts are cheap and there’s plenty of space in the engine bay to do repairs. Thats a nice colour on yours too 😀
I have 1990 E34 with old grill but with newer m50b20 engine. Have been in my family for 15 years now and its a great car. Did a full engine rebuild with new everything after 260k km driven and put it on sport shocks and springs. It drives so good now. Next is body restauration and new paint because it rusts.
Wow that’s amazing 👌 goes to show if these cars are maintained then they’ll run forever. How do you like the sport shocks and springs? Rust is unfortunate on these cars but if you keep on top of it it’s not a problem
@@whannel525 Yes these cars are forever when taken care of. Sport package is stiffer and lower but i like it very much. High speed corners feels like a race car now. 😄
@@whannel525 Try Bilstein and Eibach combo. Comes with one kit and easy to install. There are 3 levels of lowering springs. Took the medium pack and its perfect, not too high and not too low.
Hi Darren, for removing the roof it is indeed done through the rear right door out but I recommend to remove the right front seat before. It gives you more space to manoever the roof and be careful not to crack it. Since when you will refurbish it, cracks may be seen through the cloth. This said, I'm glad to see your enthusiasm for this car. If you treat the car well, you will never regret the investment made. Driving my E34 520i still makes me feel good even after all those years. The engineering, the design, the built quality,.. is just so good and truly marks an era of quality, craftsmanship and durability. Enjoy the drive!
Thanks for the advice about the seat. That’s defo going to be my best chance. Yeh I do love these cars. I love older cars in general but this era of BMW is my favourite. You’re right, they were just built better back in the day 👌
The general consensus on the forums back in the day was the standard exhaust flowed well. I always fancied putting in a 'b28 in a 520 - both had Siemens ecu s i believe
Yeh years ago I had a custom exhaust on my 525i and went back to standard because it was just better all round. But I would like a bit more sound (not much though). Oh that would be cool 🤔
I’ve heard that. I’ll need to look into a solution for it because it’s always wet here so when I do get the rust sorted I don’t want the same thing to happen again year or 2 down the line again.
Hi Darren Whannel, I love your content! I'm interested in discussing a potential collaboration. Could you let me know the best way to reach you? Thanks!😊
I had 525i, bought one when I was 21 and then sold it at 25. If I ever going to buy a bmw it’ll be either again e34 or e36 coupe, nothing else. The rest of them are ugly, cheap and only childish men drive them
i daily drive a e34 520i m50 and its amazing, its been on my family since i was a child, 340.000km and never a problem
That’s amazing 👌 It shows how well these cars were built back in the day
I did too for 3 year till rust killed it now i got another one for holiday roadtrips.
@@8kmar it’s unfortunate that they like to rust 😢

same . I love e34 soo much only best parts for it. that feeling driving this car is indescribable.
Me too 👌 it’s a lovely car to drive even after all these years
Definitely one of the best generations. Please keep it forever ❤
I would have to agree 👌😀

That’s the combo I used to have on my old E34 years ago. I liked it. Felt OEM and looked just right

You’re very welcome 😀
Before BMW went ugly. This and E30 are pinnacle designs
I think I agree with you there 👌👌
nice car, what rims are those ?
Thank you. They are just replicas of Alpina Softlines 😀
Im scared of rust whats your fix to the door Rubber lips on the bottom of them?
Rust scares me too 😅 I haven’t thought about that yet. My front doors do seem quite rusty at the bottoms so I’m not sure how repairable they’ll be.
@@whannel525 I found out that the rubber lips trap moisture so they always keep the underside of the door wet

@@whannel525 ive seen multiple e34s without them probably to keep the wetness and rust away
That could be an option. Something to look into 🤔

Thank you, I appreciate the comment 😀 don’t worry, there will be plenty more E34 videos 👌
Keep it original, Darren.
It’s a nice original car. Would be a shame to modify
