Question…I know there is a night eagle cage for the Z6III as well…but, can the cage act as an “L-Bracket” and mount vertically to your tripod. I want a cage for accessories, but can’t lose the option of my L-bracket. 📚😎
Thanks for the question, Jason. Add a plate to threaded ¼" 20 holes on the side of the cage and, voila!, you have an L-bracket. Edit: Z6III cage review coming soon.
Fabulous Raymond - many thanks for this review. I just received my own Z8 (which is phenomenal!) and am seriously considering this Small Rig. Can I ask one unrelated question? My Z8 doesn’t seem to remember my settings when switching between video and photo. My Z6ii did this automatically - which I love (as I almost always shoot Aperture property for photos and always in Manual for video - so am having to change this each time I switch between the two). Do you have any tips for me?
Hi Zak. There are a number of settings that can be shared (or not) between photo and video--white balance, profile, skin softening, VR, etc. (Same As), or you can uncouple them in the respective menus. You can also lock shutter speed via g3 (I keep mine at 1/50 for video since I mostly shoot 24p. Note: that's overridden when, say, 120p is chosen). You could also create a memory bank.
Hi Raymond, just want to say how much I appreciate you and your wonderful channel. You deserve so many more subs and your content is more valuable than most of the larger photo and video channels I regularly come across. I am a freelance photographer and your reviews and input are so helpful! Anyways, I was wondering if you could link the clamp that appears at 2:35 which is holding your Anker battery supply, the same one I have. I would love to be able to power my upcoming Z8 (in the mail!!) this way. I will probably order one piece of the Night Eagle kit (I already have a top handle so maybe not that one) and I will use your affiliate links if so. Thanks!! :)
Thanks! I may be biased but I think my channel deserves more recognition too! There's no doubt big numbers lend "credibility." Still, all subs and views here are completely organic, which can't be said for a lot of what appear to be big channels. Glad my content is helpful to you. The holder you're looking for is this: SmallRig Holder for Portable Power Banks BUB2336 (B&H affiliate link) bhpho.to/3qkvNQa
Nice video Raymond. The rig is a beauty, but aside from the aesthetics, do you find it easier to use compared to the standard SmallRig cage? I'm thinking about picking one up for my Z6 III but I'm not sure if it's worth paying the extra money for the Night Eagle version. If it's easier to assemble/disassemble or customize, then I think that would sway me towards the Night Eagle. Thanks!
Functionally, there's not much difference. Aesthetically, the Night Eagle is pretty but the anodized finish is probably more robust on the "plain Jane" version. Depends on what your eye likes. Either way, the kit option includes the cable/input protector and handle, which is nice to have. I'm working on a full Z6III rig video, built around the Night Eagle.
If you're looking to make your Nikon Z8 fly through video productions, this might fit the bill.
I just ordered mine Z8 camera body. Thinking should I use with rig or without.
