Good job! My wife and I saved a moose calf during the heavy flooding in 6-22 Yellowstone area . Several days later the cow and calf showed up at our mountain home 300 yards from the rescue. They hung out 20 yards from the house all afternoon. She fed the calf and then they bedded down. The little fellas mom will find it.😊 Thanks for the happy story.
Nice thoughts and that’s a kind view but don’t blow smoke up anyone’s rump; nature is neither cruel nor kind. It’s indifferent. There are too many factors involved with that little one’s chances and happy thoughts won’t be involved AT ALL with whether or not the mother is reunited with it. For starters, it is unknown just how far it was washed down that river. It’s a touching situation no matter how one views it or no matter what happens. That it!
The way she looks back at her rescuers is heartbreaking. It's like she's uncertain about what to do or where to go and that maybe she should go back to her rescuers. I know the odds of reunion aren't great, but I can certainly hope that's what happened.
Yeah. I sure hope she finds her mom. It's hard with wild animals to know when to leave them or when they need rehab and release later. Prayers for that little one.
@@vivalaleta Yes. babies need milk, they can't eat on their own yet. Either that or look around to see if its mother was looking for it. The problem is that no one knew where the little thing fell into the river.

@@adamk.7177 haha nice judgement you completely got that one wrong my friend , it was a funny comment I made whilst sitting with my grand children and joking about being extra terrestrials . Whoops there may be more emotional range in my one comment when compared to your whole life so far my friend .
Bravo ! ....et bonne année 2024 !
It's complete myth that a slight bit of human scent makes any mother from another species turn away from her offspring. The rescuers should not have been afraid to dry and warm the moose calf, before sending her into the woods, wet and cold.
True, but there is still a good chance that the cow will find the calf if they call out for each other, and if the calf hadn't travelled too far downstream.
I think you should have held onto the calf until you saw Mom. Yes, and used the thermal blanket too. Of course, thank you so much for saving this beautiful little moose....it must have been very scared.....
So did she find her mama you guys didn’t say ! Please don’t tell me you let him go and never checked because if mama was no where to be found that little one will die
The important thing is the wee beast has another chance at its life, whereas remaining in the water that had been vanishingly small. Mom (who may be a first time mother) may be dealing with another youth and might not reveal that possibility to get this one while the rescuers are present (and perhaps to her estimating posing a threat): [The breeding season (rut) for moose begins in late September and lasts into early October. Cows may produce their first calf when they are two, and most produce a calf by age three. Each May, cows give birth to one to two calves. Cows rarely have more than two calves and young cows rarely have twins.]
Odds are they just released that calf to die. They should have stayed with it a bit and let it start calling. It is BS that if you "get too much scent" on the animal its parent will reject it. Animals are captured, tagged, rescued and returned all the time. Animals that are that quick to throw away offspring while having only one or two a year aren't going to last very long. Plus everyone was wet and the guys are wearing rubber suits so even if it WERE true you aren't getting so "throw my child away" scent all over it.
The sad truth is, they probably rescued the calf from a much less painful death than it likely found on its own, parentless in the forest. Its mother was probably way up stream, possibly even on the other side of the river. Sadly, I believe its chances of survival were probably less than 5%.
I saw a story about a guy who recently got fined $1k for saving a bison calf in Yellowstone. All he did was nudge it up onto the bank bc it was too weak to do so itself. The fine was for moving or disturbing wildlife. Yellowstone claims it had to euthanize the calf anyway, though I can't but wonder whether the desire to send a message figured into that decision to some extent.
Yes, the messaging probably did, but discouraging folks from handling calves may save humans from serious injuries. In retrospect, blocking off the road from traffic until the bison cow could cone down and lead the calf away might have been tried, had the rangers been promptly notified of the situation.
Hes worried about a foil blanket putting too much scent on the baby but not when he was hugging it and patting it with bare hand. Thaaaat part was fine, but a foil blanket would smell like humans too much somehow.

How would you know that?

The only way to save it was to stay by it until its mother turned up and if she didn't they would have to take it home with them.
Why was it in the river in the first place?
What does he mean too much scent? I’m not familiar with that
Who would leave it sitting there like a target for every other predator out there after doing all that work to pull it out of the river?
