Here's the tablet I bought last year: XP-Pen Artist 22R Pro.
I needed something fairly big (21.5 inch was just right for my work area) with a built in adjustable stand that can be used as a 2nd monitor (so 1080p made sense to match the main monitor), built in shortcut keys and wheels (no room for comfortably accessible keyboard), and it had to work with windows 7 and 10 (for current pc and for future pc), and I didn't care for mobility or touch screen options and instead I needed something with good quality at a reasonable price without having to buy anything extra. 600$ seemed fine.
And I found the tablet that fits my needs, paid it off in 4 months and... drawing became fun again! I hated drawing on my old Wacom 13HD, the screen felt tiny and cramped, CSP ui was also super tiny and it was sometimes hard to click on the right icons and it had no stand so it was really straining to draw on for a longer time.
I went from not drawing for weeks or even months to drawing daily (in fact, I'm at 255 daily drawings right now and I've been learning a lot about drawing in CSP but also drawing in general and I'll use that knowledge for my future comics). Sometimes the right tools can make a big difference :D

Thank you Josh! Its so rare to find such honest, unbiast and objective reviews on TH-cam.
Im so tired of TH-camrs just prestenting Tablet X, talking for 10 mins about how good everything is and how well basically ALL new tablets are performing, because obviously thats just not true.
As a beginner for digital art you can quickly get a false impression of how the state of the technology actually is and you realy help to prevent that by giving such profound insights.
    Keep it up!

I really appreciate and was surprised that you touched on the Huion pen pressure thing. I find it's really hard to get my lines to flow nice in CSP, probably because of this, and I was surprised and comforted that you said you also have to change the pen pressure settings both in app and with the tablet settings itself. So now I don't worry my hand just can't do nice brushstrokes. I was considering to buy a new pen to see if there would be any difference or improvement, but thanks to this video I think that would be a waste of money; not to mention the only pen I could upgrade to is a battery pen. Also want to mention that my tablet came with 2 pens and there is a pen pressure difference between them, another reason i considered trying a new pen. It's only a QOL thing anyway, I can still draw, and only even noticed an issue because I had the two to compare with each other.
You only touched on it for maybe 2 minutes, but thanks very much for pointing it out lol.
Despite already being subbed to you, I found this video as I was looking for actual reviews on Huion, to see if their newer models may hold up for a few years. Though mine has had very little issues, I know a lot of other people have had issues with their Huions, at least the older models.

What a wonderful video!! You really put so much freaking work into this! I am still using my OG iPad Pro and will continue to use it for as long as it lasts before changing it. My old cintiq and intuos tablets are not compatible with anything at all at this moment, so I am just trimming down my digital art collection.
I have also reduced my art output by quite a bit (8-5 job + dissertation) and am concentrating on watercolors at the moment. But this is freaking useful as technology continues to change and there are so many more options than 3-4 years ago even!

Thank you for this! I've been looking into the mobile tablets specifically for a while, but you're the first person to cover all the aspects of drawing with this range that I've seen! This has been so helpful as I continue to think on this. I really would love a video comparing the iPad in a Mac environment vs the Galaxy in a Windows one if/when you can. I'm very hesitant to get into the Apple ecosystem (will be building a PC in the future), but I can't deny the performance - also curious on WWDC. Thank you again!

I deeply appreciate all the effort that you put into this video for us all to see. I have been using an XP-Pen for about 3 years now and I know I want to upgrade my Art PC when I have a chance to do so. I was also thinking about upgrading the tablet as well. Another friend has a Huion but I don't hear too much about said brand too often. Visually being able to see by the comparisons and such was very helpful and also seeing mobile tablets. Something I have also thought about but never truly considered until watching this. I feel I will come to a decision soon when the time does come to upgrade again. Thank you once again so much for sharing this knowledge with us.

I have a Huion Kamvas 13 at home (my table doesn’t have that much space, so the 13” is about as big as I could go without rearranging everything) and an 11” iPad Pro for when I’m out, and I actually landed on a perfect workflow for me. Between school and work, I’m not at home much, so I end up doing pretty much all of my sketching, planning and anatomy practice on the iPad. Then, when I actually have time to sit down at my desk, I’ll go back to the sketches I made and render them into actual paintings. It’s been keeping me incredibly consistent lately and as a result, I’ve noticed a pretty significant amounting improvement in my art skills

With the samsung tablets you can cast your pc screen to it and have it be a mirror.
So you can still have an ergonomic setup where you draw on the tablet but look at the monitor because its the same display on both

After watching the entire video from start to finish I’ve gotta say I’m really impressed with how much knowledge was condensed into this. I found out a lot about lamination, color gamut, pressure sensitivity…etc
Pretty much lots of things I wasn’t aware of before. And I’m glad to know I’ll be sticking to my trusty IPad Pro and saving for up for the Huion 🤠👍🏻 I’ve been eying it for a while now and it sounds like the perfect fit for me.💚
I have a light hand for drawing so it’ll be ok and that latency is nice!😍 I do hope they fix the pressure issue though.🤔 I wonder if a software update would do the trick? I also really like that their drawing tablet is for left handed people like myself and no buttons are in the way. I think your recommendations for them will really up their product.
Another amazing recommendation from you Josh. Thanks a lot for the info!🤠👍🏻
(Also, on a separate note, I’m glad you mentioned the Sketchboard pro for the iPad. I’ve been looking for something like that and I ordered it immediately when you brought it up. Can’t wait to get it. It may be pricey, true, but I use my iPad for writing/drawing 12+ hours a day so it’ll be a good investment for me)

    • @ergojosh
      @ergojosh  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Thank you! it was originally 3 hours...lots of condensing. The software update might be the thing. I wanted to keep everything using the same computer for the tests, but the drivers for mac are 6 months old for the Huion unfortunately, much worse than the other tablet drivers. The sketchboard pro should be great for you! I still use it regularly.

Oh, wow! Thank you! I really, really appreciate all the work you've put into this 🥰
And yes, please do a video on the Android vs. iOS environment.
The pen-part of this video was really helpfull as well - hence a short video where go go more in depth with the different pens, would also be greatly appreciated. For instance which wacom pens works with the galaxy tabs and how well and so forth. And maybe with a name/buy/brand list in the description 😇
Truth is: I am at a loss on which tablet to buy ( I am definitely in your "portability group"). I already own my old Wacom Bamboo Manga and one of the bigger Huion Kamvas Pros, which I love, but hate that I can't bring it with me that easily. My mind is juggling between the Galaxy Tab S6 Lite 2022, Galaxy Tab S8 Plus, iPad Air and the iPad Pro. Let it be said that I have never owned an Apple product and value for money is definitely a priority.
Not that I've made any conclusions, but this video still was a Godsend 🤗
Again, thank you so much for your effort 😊

Just got an iPad Pro 10.9 two days ago after watching this video and wow, why didn’t I get this sooner!! I absolutely love the mobility and procreate is an amazing app for its price. For sure I will still work on AI and PS, but this will absolutely elevate my art!
Love this video. It’s really in depth and I thank you for the recommendation. I agree on the pen. The Apple pen is fantastic! Very intuitive too. I got a protector that feels like drawing on paper. Best accessory to add to the iPad.

I was on the fence about Huion, but since I primarily work on my iPad, I think having the Huion to switch to for more desktop-intensive work is a really good option (especially regarding the colour accuracy, as you cover in 55:10-55:15). I've finally got a handle on how colours work in digital painting and I'd rather not go crazy trying to figure out what changed because one display leans more towards one colour over the other.

This is a great combo. I have a huion display tablet and an ipad pro, and together they both cover everything I can think of. Fantastic balance having both!

So how's the feel of drawing on an iPad I was thinking of replacing my sketchbooks with a portable tablet to save on inks and paper but torn between an iPad and those Microsoft surface with krita?

Josh, what a wonderfully unbiased review of all of the most common tablets! Hey,...kind of an odd unrelated question though,....where did you buy that dotted shirt? I love it and would like to order one for myself!
I assumed before watching this that you would just rave and sing the praises of the iPad Pro and be extra critical of everything else; I was incorrect! This was purely informational and matter of fact! Thank you!

Just a note. I actually love the button on the s-pen. I've never used the bluetooth function but if you hover close to the screen and hold the button it'll erase. I've always used that functions since before they started having bluetooth on my note phones.

Thank you for a great insight into art tablets, as a self taught artist on paper looking at what tablet artists can do is quite scary. I have no clue on what to select in the menu and on how to use it.
I have a surface pro 6 which I really love using but haven't tried to use it for art. I'm hoping that it would help me to achieve some form of art on a tablet.
Thank you again for the insight of types of tablets out there.

Amazing detail. Too much for my needs today. I want a simple value priced drawing tool to use in a PowerPoint presentation where I draw a rough sailboat, an island and waves.., then do some calculations and talk through 3 or 4 of the answer points.

As someone who owns an MS Pro 16, I don't recommend (I still hear others asking about it). I use my Tab S7 more often now and with Krita 5.0 updated on the mobile ver, it's really a no brainer that my tablet is better.
Interesting to hear about how weight of the pens feeling can really differ per person. I have small hands and tend to be heavy handed, preferring lighter pens but I have never tried an Apple pencil. Gotta say though, I agree with the S Pen's tip degradation- it gets so pointy that even with a screen protector, I get scared that it'll get scratched up. Would prefer it to be rounder over time of use.

Hey @ergojosh. When we experience an apocalyptic end of digital drawing equipment in the world (Mars will be a colony then) , your studio will be ground zero. Man you have a museum right there😆! Thanks for the insight.
