I got a tricolour Canna last year, and it didn't come up this year. I was really disappointed. Mine came from the garden centre. My others look fine.

Good information Kris, but miss some important information also. And yes I do live in the Netherlands and yes I do have a pretty large canna collection:)

@@tropidutch what is the situation in the Netherlands regarding the virus in garden plants?

@@YorkshireKRISunfortunately there are still alot of virussed plants in the Netherlands:) there are different types of Canna virus also. Even seed grown canna's can be infected with virus but showing in the second or third year or even later. If you grow canna's in full ground and it gets infected you can't plant a new Canna in the same spot for at least 3 years, if you grow in containers make sure to sterilize the containers before planting new canna's in, dont re- use soil for new canna's. I do grow alot of canna's in my small tropical garden too and every year its a risk to expand the collection with new ones, I do buy from private sellers that are aware of virusses and do grow and collect canna's for many years.

I get Canna Leaf Rollers and have to use spray to rid them unfortunately. But here in Zone 7b in Jackson, TN, U.S.A. with our dreadful heat extremes of summer, often reaching normal temps at or very near 100-degrees F, we get leaf stress here of burning, even with high sun varieties that just cannot take this extreme temps. Hopefully I can keep the canna virus away for awhile longer.

How common is canna virus in the US?

@@YorkshireKRIS Hey Kris! I personally have not run into it and I have grown cannas for many-many years. Again, I have more problem with the Canna leaf rollers and I have to spray "SEVIN" spray to control or NEEM Oil every month during the growing season. I grow a mostly tropical garden as possible here in the southeast in Tennessee Zone 7b. We have a little micro climate where we get unusual weather that may or may not be what the rest of our area gets sometimes. But I will research and ask some friends at the U. of TN Ag Research Center located in my city. Thanks for asking Kris, and have a great day!

@jolandbos3124 sorry that happened. Our oppressive and unexpected nearly 100 degrees in mid June is not normal and has already taken its toll on several younger plants and seedlings that just cannot take this. Me, either! Hahaha

Just checked my canna musafolia and yes, it looks like it has the virus. Drats! Have dug up and disposed of as suggested. Does the virus exist in the ground as I now have a big space to fill?
