      @@MyTennisHQ Kareu I'm not at your level, but I keep one of my fingers off the grip on my forehand on purpose in order to sabotage half the power in the strings so they dont' jump the ball with too much power, its not that I can't hit the ball at 115-120 mph and just smoke the ball I can, but its because I don't have tight enough spin to always maintain that max high power level for very long.
      But putting all my fingers on the grip to push the pedal all down to the metal at a 90-100% power level the spin just becomes all loose and weak and is more harder to keep on maintaining, so I drop the power level down to a level where I can always keep the tight spin on the ball... That's why I have the finger off also off on my serves to kill the power level to increase up all the RPMS instead on the ball.. Because I can't do any tight spin when using full 90-100% blast power with any tight tension because tension causes me to overcook the serves with far too much power with LOOSER SPIN and the the ball starts overcooking the lines.. So I have to take the tension off in order to generate more faster tighter spin on the serve.

      @@MyTennisHQ Do you disguise your swings? For I was coached Federer's backhand style and and once i learnt how to generate pace with both the slice and flat I disguised my slice to look like normal flat drive. Now people can't tell what drive it is I'm doing when using the same swing. I do use across the body for slice sometimes but I like like it better when I can disguise the ball to look the same when the flat or slice drive crosses the net. I think I know why Federer was hard to read on the court. I haven't disguised my forehand yet so everyone can still read the racquet.

    Great lesson, I used to play a lot till I was 15 and had to stop playing then, I am 33 now and started playing and in love with the sport again. I watched almost all the good lessons on TH-cam, which are all really good, but you would find some overlap between different lessons surely! This, on the other hand is completely fresh and I haven't seen any videos covering what was covered in this video. This is a really important lesson at a fundamental level. Thank you for this!

    Thanks, Karue. I really like the medicine ball drill and will certainly try that. I have arthritic knees so I’m hoping is exercise will help strengthen the necessary muscles and get that drive forward into muscle memory.

    This lesson was amazing! With the one exploding towards your target part, I'd like to view to the over-rotation as a little lag after going towards the target because it's likely that you have to get back into position in time and balance your body after the stroke. This drill with the medicine ball really shows/ feels if you are doing the stroke right.

    I love the fact you're providing a lot of content that combines knowledge/theory with specific, often advanced drills. Anyway, can you speak a bit more about down and up motion when heating groundstrokes? I think it's really important in the context of this exercise

    I think If you focused more on the elbow abduction and the wrist flexion of the scapular domini you’ll get more wrist lag and more Federer power🥸

    Hi Karue, great content always👍 any tips on how to hit it clean with incoming ball has heavy top spin? I definitely hit more consistently and more clean with less spin balls. But want to get better hitting with opponent who has good top spin! Thanks!

      if you use a medicine ball you will feel the timing. Just think about it this way, you don’t want any awkward pauses. From the moment you start your unit turn to the moment you hit the ball it should be one fluid motion. Not too early, not too late. The issue is, the ball comes to you at different speeds so you need to adjust accordingly

    thats great information Karue, I figured it out recently by mistake and been trying to get better to the concept, indeed the timing is a bit difficult but when everything locks in, the result is revealing! I dont know if it helps but I visualize that the push is initiated using the buttock 😃😃

    You did well on the outside leg and hip area as the initial sources of power in that order. But you missed mentioning the torso and shoulders turning around and forward to finally release that tremendous power into the shot.

    Karue, how to send back deep balls when you are on a run to get them? Those that you can't hit with your groundstrokes, and pros return them deep with a slice that looks so easy.

    I think the "aha!" moment for me was when he said "pushing off the ground". I was always using my arms to generate all the power. While it works, it also drains me in no time flat. I shall try this on my forehand next time. I've got some doubt on my backhand side though, since its a single-hander instead of a double. Does the single-hander also utilise power from the lower body to push off the ground? Or does the single-hander get power from another source?

    Great example, in boxing the same principals apply, and some of the same training techniques.
    The differences stemming from the differences in footwork and rotation between hitting a ground stroke and throwing punch. The power comes from the legs pushing off the ground, rotation and follow through after contact.

    Hi Karue, for a beginner my rotation is pretty good according to my coach. Particularly on my forehand. However, everytime I play against someone that has stronger hands and forearms (mines are pretty weak to be fair) they always hit the ball with much more power even if their rotation is not that good. Any thoughts?

    Not really related to this video, but I had a question on footwork/recovery for you Karue. When the rallies are decent paced and deep, I have no probably making the cross over steps and shuffle steps to get into the correct position and split step because there's a rhythm with fast paced balls. My issue is when the balls are much slower( either from myself or my opponent), I get to the right position on the court quicker but my rhythm is off and I end up standing there for a second then split stepping. What do you recommend in this case? When I get to the right position on the court early do I just split step in place 2-3 times?

      yeah when things slow down you might need a few split steps in the same position (Novak does that a lot). Also, you can move slower when things slow down. It might seem like the wrong thing but you can make make all the steps a bit slower. Don’t walk or get on your heels but let the pace of the ball dictate how your body moves.

    Hey Karue, once you improve your power is it wise to change racquets to something more control oriented? I feel like the power of the racquet that I play with is becoming a little too much now that my technique and strength is much better than before. How should one think about this ? Or is it all just in my head ?

      Maybe. I’d say yes only if you had a an old racket that doesn’t fit your progress. If not, try upping the tension on your strings first before buying a new racket. But if you feel like you outgrew your current frame then yes try a new one

    How do you keep yourself balanced during the shot? I find when I push off my legs, it becomes really hard to consistently hit the ball as my legs are moving forward. It also seems like a lot of the pros like Djokovic don’t move their legs that much during down the middle rallies. Are they still loading and pushing forward? If so, how are they able to still be relatively stationary?

      Years and years of coiling and doing a unit turn over and over, they have the mind muscle connection and strength to be a little more stationary while hitting it hard and effectively

    Great lesson! May I hereby ask a question: moving to tennis from badminton (at the college level), I have been always struggling with creating power on my two-handed backhand, but when trying one-handed I can get much more power and speed (not being jammed at all). So should I change to one-handed or not? I feel the two-handed one has more stability, especially in return of the serve. Thank you again for your video!

      That is the million dollar question haha it really is a personal preference. returns are definitely easier with two handers. One handers are great for variation and creating angles and lots of topspin. Go with whichever is more natural IMO

    What about the 1 handed backhand?
    It seems to me the power on that stroke does not come from the left leg (for right handers)

      One handed backhands also push from the outside leg. Doesn’t look like it but you do (watch Stan Wawrinka backhands)

    Very good video, but like the person below, I would like see how you can get power on the serve. What I am particularly interested in is how a medicine ball can be used to gain power on the serve

      I just don’t like the word loose. I think it can be very confusing for amateurs because they over do it. Being too loose is can lead to problems in stroke production

    Yes I am guilty of being a lunatic sometimes. The last time I was practicing on court, there was a little construction zone behind the courts. I was attempting to load and hit like Djokovic and Serena; and I hit the ball well over and beyond the fence into the construction zone. Let's just say that the construction workers were not that happy with random tennis balls hitting their equipment.😒😒😒

    Hey Karue! I have a question that is unrelated to this video. There are some rumours about new vcore line coming out in december. Have you heard anything about that? (Blink twice if you are not allowed to reveal that :) )
    I'm looking to switch to vcore, but am willing to wait couple of months to test the latest version. if the rumours are true. I was guessing there is nobody better to ask, considering both You and your boy Marcos are using that frame :)
    btw, too bad he fell just a bit short on that semis in Vienna. Played a great match vs Dimitrov

      Hi! Honestly I have not heard much about an updated VCORE. I believe is coming, spoke to someone from yonex and they mentioned a launch but didn’t specify at all. I am guessing it is the VCORE lineup. I’d say wait until the turn of the year

      Yes, power will still come from the same leg

      That's very useful information. I thought one handers don't practice this drill from the BH side because torso rotation and non dominant hand motion strictly simulate a 2hBH and definitely not a 1h. Except if they execute it in a different way. They could actually do it with a small 1kg handball throwing it with the dominant hand only and keeping the torso sideways longer.

      as many times as you want. No need to do it a lot but a few times, even against a wall will do

    Medicine ball ...I play one handed backhand...it is good for my forehand but when I go backhand side it feels akward to me...
