Barcelona’s “Identity Crisis”: Failed Transfers , An Aging Team & the Decline of La Masia
What’s wrong with FC Barcelona? Are Barcelona in decline? In this video we’ll explore what has contributed to Barcelona’s slip from their perch as the world’s best team one decade ago under Pep Guardiola. They still remain competitive in La Liga, but Barcelona’s Champions League collapses vs AS Roma in 2018 and vs Liverpool in 2019 add further turmoil to this aging, mentally shaken club that relies far too often on Lionel Messi to save them. Should Ernesto Valverde have been sacked earlier, and how has Josep Bartomeu and the Barcelona board contributed to this slip? Has Quique Setien lost the respect of the players, and should Setien leave Barcelona?

The problem with Barca is that they never invested in youth and now they are in a weird phase where there are so many old players and so few young ones that when they play players like fati and Puig who are fast and full of energy with rusty busquets and rakitic also they are afraid of benching the old players too coutinho and griezmann are played out of position which frustrate them and hence are unable to perform well they also have a coaching afraid of players
Imagine if your teacher is scared of his students
Real Madrid on the other hand have invested well in youth they have old player players in there prime and youngsters who are blended in very well in the team plus they have Zidane as their manager a football legend who many people admire
The teacher here is respected by his students this is why Barca are on a downfall

I believe the demise of Barcelona started around the time went they switched jersey sponsors from UNICEF to Qatar Airways. I that point the club sold their philosophy of long term investment to short term instant gains. The academy hasn't produced a regular starting player in a while. Barca just buys the best players without thinking will this player fit with the system they have. They have literally three of the same players on the roster (Messi, Greizman, and Counthino).

Much like when Man Utd dominated the English game when their generation of top young players came through. Barca need to rebuild or face years in the wilderness and only have to look to Utd to see what can and will happen.

      100percent agree with u
Messi has always been like this but the 3 to 4 years this is more noticeable
He just stays static waiting for the ball rather than running into space and asking for it
And adding to the fact that Barcelona players are dependent on messi who is not in good position or enough space to make something happen which in turn slows the game down
If messi was more proactive in making small movements and runs and then asks for the ball it can be a lot better

However with Barca it's different, The glory years are the anomaly, not the rule. Gotta look back prior to 2000 to realize this.
What fans should be concerned of however is the fact that historically (pre 2008) Barcelona never really had the kind of era they had 2008-2015, they don't have anything to look back on in terms of handling the situation that is and has been coming at them for the past 4 years or so.

It is baffling to me that since Guardiola left no big name coach was given the chance to coach such a talented team. Why? Was the board afraid for the coach to clash with the big egos in the team? Were the players deciding who to hire (Tata?)? It's so sad what Barca has become. They could have added at least 2 more CL wins to this Messi generation. Time for big changes there. It should start up top.

Which was what made Pep the perfect coach, for a team that has the greatest player ever on it. Because despite Messi's heroics, Pep demanded his players play as a team/his way. The over reliance on Messi was a great point!👍 Along with Barca forgoing developing talent in house, for high priced free agents, who rarely stick around very long. How fitting would it be for Man City/Pep's Boys to be the one's who drive the final nail in their metaphorical coffin? By knocking them out of the Champions League very early by Barca's standards(knockout stage). Enjoyed the video!👌

At the current direction it's game over for Barca once Messi leaves/retires, at least until Laporta takes over Barca again. Real Madrid on the pitch also is not in a good situation currently, but at least they have more prospects in the future and multiple good young players on loan that can bolster the squad.

After 7 months Setien managed to slip the league away and been dumped by Bayern 8-2, definitely way worse than before.

Great video which sums up a lot of the problems with the Barca team and organization. You could also have mentioned the Martin Braithwaite deal as one of the clearest indications (this year, anyways) of how poor the board is doing. Loans/ sells Carles Perez to Roma, despite the fact that he did a great job in the games he got for the first team - and with the problem of the team having no depth at all on the right wing having Dembele out injured (as per usual) and Messi + Suarez not fully fit. I mean, once more, the club sells out a young promising talent, who did an acceptable job (not saying he's the new Messi), just to end up buying a dane who had previously played for relegation-prone teams (Middlesbrough and Leganes). Not to mention the purchase of Coutinho and try to replace him 1-1 with Neymar. Don't even get me started on Griezmann - this guy is a great attacker and his price was high for that reason, but comming to Barca, he's being used as a winger - I mean, at this point it's just pure stupidity.
Bartomeu started out great in 2013/2014, but from the latter part of 2014 till this day, it's been a horrorshow and I do not understand, in any way, how the board refuse to see it.
Again, great video and greetins from a Barca fan in despair.

I think age is not that important. Look for example at Müller and Boateng, both were weak while Kovac was head coach and in the press they wrote, that both players are too slow for modern football. And look at them now when Flick is head coach, Müller has the record for most assists and Boateng is so strong like in 2015.

Main problem for barcelona is how weak and pathetic they are away from home, 16 games in la liga this year away and only 23 points picked up, and they only have a +3 gd in those games, not to mention the decline of Pique and a weak midfield and weaker defense that carelessly give away fouls in dangerous positions

when Neymar left they were so obsessed with filling the hole that they spent so much on players who couldnt fit in to the system and were not nurtured properly.
My prediction: I think if Man City gets banned from champions league there are some excellent players that Barca can sign from City. Bernardo Silva is the closest thing to Iniesta today, Laporte is for me the second best CB and hes a great ball playing CB, not to mention maybe they can bring Pep back.

I agree with everything you have stated. Barcelona is at a unbalanced state with poor decision making. All due to respect to Pjanić but I believe we should’ve kept Arthur instead, he was young, composed, & talented. Once I heard we got rid of Arthur, questions began to generate as to WHAT THE HELL IS THE BOARD DOING?? Arthur could’ve been a replacement for Iniesta, we just needed to give him time to fully develop. The Barcelona board, for me, is the biggest problem we got, poor decision making, poor planning, & poor financing. FC Barcelona as a whole is deteriorating & it’s showing, I mean just look at what Bartomeu is doing! He’s basically changed La Masia to serve a different purpose than what it was originally for. I’m disappointed because we went to having the glory days at Barcelona to having the decline of Barcelona. It’s sad to see a club this great be taken down by the decisions of the board & by the mentality of the players.

Dont know why Barca fans do believe that Xavi is the answers to all their problems.. He is not guaranteed to suceed.. He has not proven his managerial success with any team.. Most of the great players have been bad managers.. Take Maradona as an example.. Xavi is a legend but not everyone is Zidane or Pep.. Barca's problems run deeper than just the coach.. The board and players themselves are part of the problem.. Pep was fortunate enough that he inherited the golden generation of La Masia and Zidane was already handed a star studded top teir team.. Barca need a complete rehaul even if Xavi is to succeed..

Settien's role is being overblown in the decline. like mentioned, it's much more about aging squad which can't be understated, they have 8 regulars/starters who are averaging 32 years old. "to fight"is too much to ask for players that old vs topfit peak physique teams. again, not settien's fault. way too much. which is not his fault, injuries of the few players with depth and speed Dembele. Griezmann is not a good fit for Barca, atletico and even france have such different squads people overlooked he was not the right fit in a team where messi is the vocal point and he has to play second fiddle, he might've been a technical marvel in atletico, but so was Arda, again, not settien's fault. and talking about the young players, he has given them chances but doesn't put all the burden on them, this is arguably what most managers do. then thelast point, he hasn't even had a preseason with the team and his own transfer window/s

I don't know anything about the inner workings of Barcelona management but when it comes to finances I see Barcelona, kind of, like I see Mercedes in car development, when push comes to shove, THEY WILL ALWAYS PROCURE THE FINANCES!
In my opinion it is characteristic of ALL Spanish top football to become conservative once results are not optimal. The stakes are so high that management adopts a CYA (cover your ass) mentality and opts for "known entities", i.e. old players, in favor of ""risk element"" young, not fully proven talent.
This video was published on July 2, 2020, don't know when it was made. I also don't know when the deal was solidified but Barcelona has in the past few weeks hired a new coach, Ronald Koeman.
Ronald Koeman (I am biased because I grew up in The Netherlands) comes from a long heritage of successful collaboration of Barcelona and The Dutch, meaning Barcelona attracting talent from Ajax. Ronald Koeman is also a good diplomat, who can besides displaying football knowledge, communicate effectively and work well with a board/management. And lastly, Koeman has spent a significant time period at Ajax, a team that practically phrased the coin developing youth and gaining talent from within.
You mentioned a success pattern/past of coaches who were players before coaching....Koeman is exactly that.
I look forward to seeing Barcelona's future and what they will be able to accomplish with Ronald Koeman. Let's all see what happens!
    Cheers.

Koeman better hope he gets a massive investment if the club can manage to swindle one of the Oil club's (PSG, Man City) and have the funds to literally build back the foundation from the ground up if they don't let Leo Messi walk away free (Odds are that won't happen).

Nah buying youngsters or not it won't change anything. Barca team needs a complete overhaul starting from Messi. Yes Messi, hear me out.
Messi is notorious for being the one that decides first team squad be it Argentina or Barca, I rest my case. Now on the field Messi needs to put up on the striker position like in his younger days coz he has lost his pace and his mazy runs with sudden burst of acceleration has become fewer and fewer especially against good teams and when the big matches comes around like finals he is nowhere to be found and gets shut down.
Messi for all his greatness needs to played on the front line like his younger days. I remember the season he scored the highest individual goals in a calendar year, there were lots of matches where he ran less than the freaking goalkeeper in the whole match. Yep! less than a goalkeeper xD Messi needs to play like that now more than ever. Concentrate on scoring not playmaking.
