Charlier's Étude no. 2 - du Style - Tackling the Challenges!- Part 1
Of course this book (Théo Charlier's 36 Études Transcendantes) is a perennial favorite among trumpeters since its publication in 1926; not only is each étude a musical gem, but Charlier was clearly a genius at parsing out and attacking every conceivable problem on the instrument.
I think many of us would agree: he was brilliant at making you feel like you couldn't play at all, LOL - and yet, conquering each étude meant you'd become a measurably better player, no doubt about it.
So, this is in part inspired by the great Håkan Hardenberger - perhaps my greatest trumpet hero of all time, in any genre - and definitely in my top 2 or 3 - and his amazing video series covering these études.
Of course, I'm sure as heck no Håkan, and I didn't get to record with pro equipment in a gorgeous hall during lockdown 😀 - but I thought that it might be helpful to address some of the challenges in this arguably most-popular of Charlier’s études, because I hear students perform (and struggle with!) this work in master classes all the time, all over the world.
I love how Håkan sounds doing these etudes on C trumpet, but I figure that most students will play it on B-flat; hence my choice here.
I've decided to do this in two or three parts for the sake of shorter videos.
In this first part, I'll address issues ranging from the very first note (How many times have we heard it missed/chipped LOL? How many times have WE missed it??) to the interval challenges and the triple-tongue gestures.
