It became a hit in Australia on the back of late-night DJs playing it - because it was so long, they'd play it when they needed to take a toilet break or a cigarette.
AWESOME, AS ALWAYS! And you know that EVERYBODY IS GETTING THIS! I'm from Philadelphia, and the parts from around 9 minutes in REALLY HIT HOME, LITERALLY!
Great research as always on this. I had some dealings with DJ Ed Sciaky many years ago who was a big part of the big Philadelphia push behind Billy. Sadly, he’s no longer with us. Ed also gave a similar push to Springsteen and others. Those days are gone and folks like Ed have been replaced by social media platforms. I’d love to see you do a program on the some of the great DJ’s of the past. You remind me of those golden years of radio where the DJ’s offered a slice of personality while they delivered the great sounds of the day. Truly a lost art form. Guys like Wolfman Jack, Murray The K, Arnie Woo Woo Ginsburg, Jerry Blavat, Dick Biondi and so many others. These guys really could make or break a record.
If you haven't read it you have to look up the short text "Billy Joel Plays “Piano Man” for the First Time At the Bar He Based the Song On" by Tom Smyth. It is a really hilarious sketch and I can't listen to the song anymore without thinking of it.
I vaguely remember him playing a couple of dorm parties in '71. I remember thinking he was very talented. Oddly, I think I'm one of the very few people on the planet who haven't seen him live since.
You can find the Cold Spring Harbor track by track speed correction on the Steve Hoffman Forums. Of course the Columbia version of the album has re-recorded rhythm tracks and corrected speed.
WMMR!??!! That brings back a lot of memories!!! 😊 I'm in thet broadcast region. I'm in Amish Country. Guess that's why I used to hear Angry Young Man and Captain Jack so much on the radio!! 😄😄 I suppose you could do a video on the whole Philly scene in music. Todd Rundgren, Hall & Oates, Patti LaBelle.... My town gave you Taylor Swift. I apologize for that. We actually don't really like her. Mention of her at a Little Big Town show gor them booed, hard. 😄 I'd better stop here before this turns into a novel. 😄 Thank you for another great video! 😊♥️
Billy Joel is now a legend, and you are awesome too. Thanks for everything.
Thanks for the view and kind words, Doc! Please share for me!

yeah. all of the long singles provided a personal business break for the guys at the console, also, notoriously "American Pie"
My favorite old guy!
Great content. Thanks
Glad you liked it, James! Please share for me!

Thanks David! Wait until you see what’s on the way this weekend! Members can already view it!
So interesting! Glad he went back to using the name Billy Joel, Bill Martin doesn't have the same ring to it!
The name Bill(y) Martin was *huge* in New York back then.
Ha! You’re right about THAT!

Thanks for the view!!
Billy did have two decent albums as a member of The Hassles and one embarrassing hard rock album in the group Attila prior to going solo.
Thanks for the post!!
Excellent video as always! Thanks.
Thanks as always, Richard!

Hey thanks for the idea! Didn't have Patti LaBelle on the list as yet - but it is NOW!
I know what came before.
I own Cold Spring Harbor
Second biggest mistake Billy did was to shave off his striking beard and mustache! He just doesn't look as cool without facial hair.
Without a doubt, it is a totally different look!!
