My buying & wearing experience after 6 months: A.Lange & Söhne Odysseus in stainless steel

  • In February, I bought myself an A. Lange & Söhne Odysseus in stainless steel - which makes me one of the lucky few…
    Beyond some wrist shots on Instagram, and some brief, initial thoughts shared there’s an absence of actual owners who have taken the time to go into any detail and to share their personal experiences of buying, owning and wearing an Odysseus, over time.
    And as someone who loves watches, I had many questions and there were many things that I wondered about BEFORE deciding to buy the Odysseus and then many more questions before I’d had a chance to spend any real time wearing it.
    So having bought, lived with & now worn the Odysseus in stainless steel for around 6 months, I thought I’d make my first TH-cam video to talk about the things that I wanted to know and also what it’s like to own one…
    By way of introduction, I’m just a guy who loves watches. I’m an amateur. A private watch enthusiast - hence my Instagram account @watchenthusiastlondon
    I’m not a blogger & I certainly don’t have any fancy equipment; to make this video I have copied footage and images used by others - I hope they’ll forgive me - alongside some of my own.
    In this video I’m going to talk about my own personal experiences as an owner. For ease of reference, there’s an index in the description below under broad topic headings, so you can go directly to the sections that interest you most.

      thank you. I think TH-cam permits the narrative to be visually enhanced & I preferred this to the audio only option…
      In all honesty, I’m not quite sure how to move forward with this “channel”. I only ever wanted to release the one video about the Odysseus - mainly because nobody else had and I would have wanted to engorge myself on such content prior to buying / owning mine - but I have since made a second video about an unfortunate experience. What next ? Still having a think about it but don’t just want to release videos willy nilly…

      @@watchenthusiastlondon Honestly I would really value a video detailing how to get to a place in your life where you can make these types of purchases responsibly. I just purchased a Grand Seiko Hi-Beat GMT, and while I totally adore it, it represents about 10% of my annual income; it's hard to imagine getting to a place in my life or career where I could ever imagine being able to even inquire about a watch as incredible as the Odysseus. Any tips and tricks on time management, self-optimization, lifestyle habits and How to Succeed in Business (Without Really Trying)? Thank you sir, love your content so I subscribed!

    when you said "it's a bit daft to be this excited at my age"...I had to reflect. I just got my first dream watch - albeit at a much different place in the hierarchy (Breitling Classic AVI) - I'm 38 and I couldn't sleep the night before I picked it up. It was Christmas in 1992 all over again. I wasn't self-conscious about it, I was happy that anything could make me feel like that again. It's important. cultivate that feeling whenever you can, no matter your age or gender or circumstances or whatever it is.
    I appreciate your channel because you seem like a very grounded dude with a real interest in high horology. A lot of high-end collectors seem utterly dispassionate and treat the hobby like a job, or the watches themselves purely as investments. It makes me bitter that I'll never as rich as them, because in a sense the experience is wasted on them. that I feel so much more for my dinky little Breitling than they do for their fifteenth hype-beast Royal Oak iteration is very hard to grapple with. You seem like you really appreciate these things. there's no shame in that.

    I know it got some negative comments when it was first released, but it really is a distinctive and nice looking watch. As far as I'm concerned, A. Lang & Sohne makes better watches than any of the holy trinity. I don't know if I'll ever be able to own one, but I certainly appreciate seeing videos of them.

    Another thorough and enjoyable review, from purchase to personal wearing experience. The fact that you are an owner rather than a reviewer talking about a borrowed timepiece makes it all the better. It was interesting to hear you comment on the wearing experience of the stainless steel model, simply because of its weight. I was lucky enough to attend a Rolex event recently, where the Rolex sales manager explained how long it had taken the manufacture to perfect the fluted bezel of its new platinum day-date. When the watch was passed around for inspection, the only thing anyone mentioned was how heavy and substantial it was; sometimes heft trumps horology! Looking forward to more reviews on your other watches. 😊

    • @watchenthusiastlondon
      @watchenthusiastlondon  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you. And yes, heft on the wrist can play a key part in the wearers enjoyment. Whilst I don’t want an overly heavy watch on my wrist, I still tend to prefer stainless steel to their titanium counterparts.

      Isn’t it funny how compelling timepieces can be to us and at different times ? It’s not always a constant feeling but instead it changes shape. From one watch to the next.
      Whilst I love all my watches, I am drawn to some more than others, at different times, and often because I (re)discover / (re) appreciate things about them… Hopefully that doesn’t sound completely bonkers and you will be able to relate. Either way, enjoy !

    (I don't comment very often.) I thought it was interesting that the TH-cam recommendation engine recommended your video to me. I thought, this channel is small, the channel only has two videos, the video is long, and it doesn't have a break-out number of views. I wonder why they surfaced this video for/to me? (I'm subscribed to many watch channels and watch a lot of watch videos. So, TH-cam knows my interests well. @Boopadin I respectfully disagree. Imagine being one were an existing good loyal customer and one was told they can't have one for a long time because of a waiting list. If one can empathize with that wealthy customer, it would like result in this customer cross shopping. Giving a reason for a customer to cross shop is ALWAYS bad for business. Additionally, wealthy people like being treated special. Its not always the item they buy, but the treatment they receive. I think they did treat him the fairly. Unlike a shady practice Rolex AD use to allow people to get on the list by buying something else. The AD told this gentleman that buying the Saxonia would not get him on the list. Maybe his interest and interactions proved to the AD this gentleman will make a loyal customer. Which they were spot on. They ended up selling 3 watches and maybe will sell a few more in the future. That is success. Relationship building is key to successful long-term business viability. Having a core loyal customer base provides stability in their business that one offs can never provide in the watch business. They are are more resession proof then Rolex as a result.

    • @Roughdraft214
      @Roughdraft214 ปีที่แล้ว

      Look at it like this, expensive, and or limited pieces are hard to get. They could easily get sold for more in the grey market, so if you establish yourself as a serious buyer, chances are you’re buying for yourself, and therefore you earn the right to buy watches at a higher price point. Also, it works in favor of high end watch brands to know they’re dealing with customers who are financially capable of buying their higher end pieces. It’s not common practice with most retailers to act this way, but with high end horology, or other expensive luxury items such as rare cars or even artwork, you have to establish a relationship with you’re dealer or broker so that you can give them reason to want to sell to you.

That being said on a recent Zoom with the folks from Lange the folding clasp will soon be available. Just ordered my 4th Lange and counting days until its arrival. @@watchenthusiastlondon I am not sure they did but can assume I am not only person to make the suggestion. 1 of the only things that bother me about Lange( this is minor and I man in LOVE with brand) is insisting on pin buckle straps on extremely heavy pieces. I did have the pleasure to have diner with the CEO recently and very politely mentioned this. Later in that diner, a few glasses of winer later, I said I would love to see the Odysseus with high complications ( chrono with GMT perhaps). Doubt my suggestion will go very far but I bet we do see some complications soon added to the Odysseus. Look forward to next video .

    Quite a journey. Well spoken, there are obvious clues the boutique marked you for your Lange’s. I dearly love the brand and appreciate your story. I’ve also have the opportunity to try on the SS and white gold rubber strap. I love the SS version. Thank-you for posting. I sincerely appreciate your experience.

      i think yes. Rolex sport watches come in yellow gold and they are still considered sport watches. Same with some Omega models.

    for the strap, as its a sport watch, it make sense that lange don't have a leather one, beside lange's leather strap are sell starting from 500usd (price exclude any buckle and als buckle are all in 18K gold or platinum) that will cost you another 2500USD+ or 5000USD+
    it's almost impossible to get titanium, i know some other collector which own many more lange than you, fail to apply one)that's why I don't even waste time to apply one
    for you next video please put the mic closer to you, the volume of the video is much lower than other channel, thank you!
    btw, don't forget to "winding" your watch before you adjust your weekday or day. in some case it may not respone(self protection) or only rotate half(eg. Fr you will only see half Fr). if that happen just winding your watch than everything will be fine again

    Your narration and experience on your watch journey! On acquiring the Odysseus is the most perfect illustration on how other ultra high end luxury watch brands, like AP, Patek, and Rolex make you play their most infamous game! Building a relationship with your ad, more like building them wealth! Their is no such thing as a waiting list!

    I think the Saxonia Thin in gold is lovely but really - as an 'enthusiastic' amateur watchmaker please NEVER shower with any watch, whilst the water resistance should be ok with the Odysseus, shampoos, soaps and other contaminants in the shower cubicle like bleach and detergent deposits, can and will attack the gaskets in the watch. I just serviced a Breitling for a friend which he had brought new 6 years ago and had been showering in daily, one of the gaskets subsequently failed when diving and the watch needed a complete rebuild, Breitling wouldn't carry out the work, under the microscope you could see how the gaskets had deteriorated.

    Great videos - watched both and subscribed. I'm a fan of Lange watches and tried out a Grand Lange 1 at a boutique and have to say that I might acquire one some day. It's a bit unfortunate that your Lange boutique is acting a bit like a Ferrari dealership having you jumping through all kinds of hoops. You might want to take a look at Vacheron Constantin, I've heard that they haven't gone on the Ferrari/AP/Rolex/Lange bandwagon just yet. Thank you.

    • @watchenthusiastlondon
      @watchenthusiastlondon  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you. Actually, my experience with Vacheron has been disappointing; having made an appointment to go into the store on New Bond Street to look at an Overseas, I arrived only to be shown a catalogue… 🤯 Sadly, a complete waste of time. I would have respected the brand had they simply told me there was nothing in stock. 😔
