The one I worked at would'nt let you chew gum if you worked in the kitchen or prep area. The franchisee equated that to you eating bits of peoples meals.
We have a Steak N Shake in our small town of Bedford IN, and we would be saddened by it's closure, the food is super good, and the service is also! Please allow our Steak N Shake to continue serving our community for years to come!
honestly its better not to have 24/7 stores, it makes everyone working there happier and you would have a cleaner store. As of my stores *all* of the cleaning duty is pushed on the 3rd shift server and cook, at the one location (where I started at) closed, it was immaculate because we had a closing hour and the servers/management were happier because of it. Ultimately I think SnS looses money being 24 hours, there is NO ONE that comes past 1am
They deserve to be shut down they don't pay shit and never have I used to work for them and they don't deserve to have any employees or customers just trust me they are scumbags

We were excited when Steak-n-Shake came to our town. I grew up with one locally & it was consistently good. High quality, great prices & excellent service. This one has a host that is unkept, stinks of B.O. & whipes off tables with a dirty rag...leaving the "cleaned" table dripping with clearly filthy, stinky & sticky water. Servers take forever to even take order...even longer for food. We gave them several chances, voiced our concerns to Mgt & even detailed this through online feedback. We waited 2 months before returning. Saw same dude up front & we just turned-around & left. We will not be back.
I just quit at my steak n shake. There were bugs. The nozzles were clogged with old syrup and God knows what else. The constant lingering odor if rotten milk. Employees and bosses lazily throwing food on the floor just to be swept by me later. Truly disgusting.
The one in Illinois where I live is fuking horrible.....yes theres bugs.....its dirty.....always get shit wrong and service is horrible......I've waited in the drive thru for 40 mins MULTIPLE times.......and if u complain about ur food sometimes even the manager will start shit with you or argue......I could go on and on
I’m a third shift employee... underpaid... overworked... and it’s all on corporates management The expectations of the company is hard to meet. But I will say it’s not the worst place of employment I’ve been involved in.
I worked for steak n shake for 17 years. I'm glad I finally left. They aren't like they used to be when I first started in 2002. It was an awesome place to work back then.
What!?! No... Steak N Shake has one of the best tasting burgers and fries. I wish they had more locations. I bought burgers and fries from them regularly when I lived in Tennessee for 4 years. Nothing like it in New Jersey.

B/N guy, am I right. Me too. I miss the old choke 'n puke. My grandfather use to run the gas stating Harper's on Main St. next to the Steak n' Shake. On Saturday's I would go with him in the morning to open Harper's. We would eat breakfast there, then lunch at noon. I loved it, nothing better for a kid. That place was always busy. Now it's a cheap pizza place. Sad that Steak n' Shake will only live in our memories.
The Steak ‘n Shake in my town has a bunch of rude waitresses! They will seat you and then ignore you for 20 minutes! One of the three that I know of in my town has already closed!!! RIP Bastards

I have to agree with you. The one by me recently closed down. Drive thru was painfully slow. Bad service but I did like the food. The water tasted like ass there me and my father have a joke about the ass water.
The last time I went to the one in Belleville, the waitress wouldn't get us milkshakes because the freezer was too far away, a customer started screaming at the manager, accusing our waitress of cursing them out, and they tried to serve my sister raw chicken. They're closed now. Too bad. I liked their chili. Oh wait, I have a knock off recipe and I make it better. Never mind.
I'm in STL too. The food is good when it's made right but the restaurants are disgustingly dirty, the service is awful, and the orders are wrong more often than not.
When Biglari Holdings took over, the service became crap. For years any one you went into in St. Louis, the service was horrible. Employees just ignored customers, and served cold food or wouldn't even wait on you if you were lucky to get seated. The employees didn't care, the managers didn't care. I was not surprised when they all closed up in the area.
In Galesburg Illinois the store was hiring so i applied with my 20+ years experience . They told me they only start at minimum wage . Pretty sure there not going to get an experienced cook . Sad
They lost my business when I got tired of waiting 15-20 minutes in the drive thru with usually only one car ahead of me. Not once, not twice, not three times. Try six times.

Most of the time this happens because SnS uses paper receipts to keep track of who ordered what and when, and when you have a kid Working drive-through that doesn’t care about the job and is still in high school, they will lose the tickets quite frequently. Go to Burger King and you’ll see that they have a screen that tells these sort of things; They do not rely on a piece of paper that can be easily lost to tell them what order is what and where and when it was ordered. Do me a favor and next time come inside to eat. It will save you a lot of headache.

I mean there is usually 1 guy making burgers for inside and outside and 3 others running 12 stations at once because it is super under staff sometimes.. we use premium meat so it cooks longer as well. It is not that mcdonalds trash. If it was up to me I would have got rid of the drive through a long time ago. As I and many of my friends see it, SNS is a sit down, eat, and hang out with friends kind of restaurant not a fast food restaurant.

I don’t eat at Steak and Shake very often but when I do I always enjoy the burgers and fries. That being said I don’t eat out very often. I’m in St Louis and they closed several close to me, one Steak and Shake cut the hours of service.
I have always liked Steak 'n Shake. Their style of burger is my favorite. However, it's become obvious to me that management is their problem, going all the way to the top. Nearly every complaint you see in reviews deals with service and that is the fault of management.
i mostly blame the fast food mentality, Steak 'N Shake is a sit down and relax kind of deal just like cracker barrel, if people want fast food that badly they should go invent the food replicator from star trek
@@gregorsamsa1364 I'm not really sure I'm still trying to work that out, it could be anything really, there's too many factors. sure going to McDonald's for a dollar sandwich is fine it's the only way some people can eat due to their low income but that doesn't mean every single food place has to do the same thing besides most of the stuff that McDonald's has is somewhat precooked compared to steak'n'shake where they have to actually grilled the meat patties and fried the fries.
The Steak and Shake near me closed down 3 months ago because they found roaches and worms in the back area and the kitchen was very dirty. I used to go to that location because it was the only 24 hours restaurant in my area.
My local Steak N Shake closed. Which was not a surprise since service was extremely bad. The last time i went , the waitress welcomed us and wiped down the table at the same time which made her Newport cigs fallout of her shirt pocket . " Sorry Baby , let me get that out of your way." It was a 45 min wait for the burgers because the kitchen focused ALL their attention on the drive thru window while NO time on the dining room guest. The wait staff and the kitchen ended up screaming at each other.
I was very disappointed when the one in my area of Holland, MI was closed and I was even more disappointed that one of my buddies who worked there losing his job when this happened. steak n shake is one of my favorites too and the people who worked in the one in my area were nice and down to earth. so sad.
Their food is great and I personally like the sit down experience. However I suspect the issue is loss of sales due to drive through customers. While they have a drive through.....it is very slow. And most folks just seem to lazy to get out of their car and walk inside. Even if it is to go. I hope the ones by me stay open. I'll make sure I frequent them.
I will tell what the problem is with a lot of “fast food” restaurants theses days. They are slower than molasses in the winter time to get your food. You can literally go to a sit down restaurant at rush time, eat and be home before you even get your food at many fast food places, mc Donald’s and steak and shake and Burger King are the worst where I live. These places are full of employees but they just stand around and look at customers instead of waiting on people and doing their jobs. After orders are taken it’s forever before you get your food.
I worked for Stk N Shi in high school 40 + years ago, before they went corporate. They still had curb service back then ( drive in service). They have slipped somewhat, but I still think they do a good job. As far as the fries - I like them. They won several awards for their shoestring fries way back then.
Love Steak N'Shake but dang their drive thru takes forever. I always feel like I'm going to miss the birth of my first child I haven't even conceived yet.
Michael Bacon Do you ever stop to think and ask yourself why a Frisco Melt Combo meal is 7.09 USD? It’s Simply sourdough bread with two burger patties and thousand Island (Frisco) sauce on the patties. We charge two dollars for our drinks, But getting a meal reduces the two dollars to about $1.20. Our food is honestly overpriced and I hate telling customers prices as a Drive Thru Operator, because guilt. Like, there’s McDonalds across the street which has much better prices, and a Burger King down the street, which has awesome deals. We have only Happy Hour as our deals, and the shitty 4 for 4 bargain, which is honestly a gimmick. Us employees get a 40% discount on our lunch break meal, and it’s honestly the true price and what someone SHOULD be paying for at Steak N Shake.
In my overcrowded neck of the woods, there are only 3 locations. There are approximately 20 million lost and lonely souls crammed in these corner of the US, If there's opportunity to expand will be here. However, the minimum wage is up to $15.00 per hour that alone should be reason enough to stay the heck away from these areas.
They opened a new store here in Beaumont, TX a few months ago. When the training crew was here, it was great. Burgers were good. Fries were crunchy and delicious. The shakes were OK, but I have had better. I could even make a better shake. Then things settled down and the permanent, local crew took over. Now the seating is dead slow, even when tables are clearly unoccupied, the burgers went downhill. The fries are served getting cold and soggy. The local crew does not care. I won't be going back. IHoP is a half block away and they have excellent burgers. It isn't about "fast and friendly". It isn't about efficiency. It is about GOOD food. But corporate weenies just don't know that.
I love their garlic burgers. The best in town. Never really cared for their milkshakes but then again, I'm not a milkshake person. I like their breakfast allot and the prices in my area are really good. It sometimes is a long wait to get your food in my area (I think 20 mins. max but sometimes we got our food within five mins.), so I only eat there on days I'm not working. Ours needs to be remolded badly. The tiles in the floor are cracked all to hell and the seats are in poor condition. The service is friendly but under staffed and they need a bigger kitchen. Nevertheless, I love eating there and the food there is amazingly good (except the fried. I never liked their fries).
The Steak and Shake Frisco melt with bacon added is the best burger I've ever eaten! People complain about it taking so long, but that's why it's so good! Their stuff isn't sitting around under a warming light for hours like other places. It's made fresh to order.
I'm guessing u don't know what a good fresh made burger entails cuz steak shake is not a place to go if u want a good burger especially since I worked at one go to in n out for a great burger and real French fries not ones tht are frozen just thrown in the deep frier just god awful a patty is not supposed to be flattened like someone smashed the shit out of it it's supposed be juicey n plump so u get flavors
i work at the Steak ‘n Shake in snellville and the problem is just that there’s poor management and not enough employees to work at the restaurant. the employees get so mad with the employees, not knowing that we’re doing the best that we can, and im a server, doing the host job, Shake job, sometimes even dressing the burgers, plus check the customers out. Steak ‘n Shake employment is just super poor, similar to McDonald’s

I love steak n shake it's started in my town we have one on damn near every street corner it's my comfort food but yea the wait is ridiculous sometimes I've spent up to a half hour stuck in the drive thru cuz of how one location is setup I couldn't pull out and by then I didn't even want it anymore
TBH that's what happens when you try to add a drive-thru to a sit down restaurant. I think that's their biggest pitfall. Drive-thrus should be reserved for fast food only. When you have 10+ customers getting sit down service, there's no way you can make the drive-thru efficient.
Not really. The one on Rabb closed, the one on Market shut down. Not sure about the Veterans Parkway. Clinton shut down almost 2 decades ago. Bun St. Hasn't been there for 40 years. The only one I know of is GE road.
Everything is made fresh. And if there are tables before you, it can take a bit. Plus they are strict on labor so it restricts how many employees are on at once, which makes it more difficult. There is a lot more to the job than what can I get you and ok here you go.
Steak n' Shake started in my city, Bloomington Illinois. The original restaurant is still there, but it's not Sn'S anymore, it called the Iron Skillet, on Bun St. I have stopped eating there because the original and classic chili, is not the chili they use to serve. Now it's some cheap knock off. They use to serve Sn'S crackers too, that was perfect for their chili. But now it some East Coast seafood crackers, tastes different. It was a few years before that change that I noticed they started to drown their steak burgers in seasoning salt, this is wrong. The original restaurant prided itself on the best pure flavor of the meat they used, no need to cover up the taste, it was mouth watering delicious. It like taking the pure taste of Culver's Butterbugers and drowning them in salt. A same bad move that McDonald's did years ago, now they drown McD's burgers in salt and pepper, covering the taste of the beef. Makes you wonder what it is that they are trying to cover up? But the only thing I would say is close to the original Steak n' Shake is those fries. But even those have changed, they use to be golden and crispy. The last couple of time I went their, they were soft and under cooked. The original owner took pride in his work, and the products he sold, quality was his selling point. If you wanted fast food, Steak no Shake was not for you, but if you were willing to wait a couple of minutes for fresh quality food, then your were at the right spot. It does not take a genius to figure out, what when wrong and when. The new owners tried to change an already successful and established franchise, to make it quicker and cheaper. But that is not what Steak n' Shake was about. It's not fast food, it's good food quick. Yeah you might have to wait for your food, but it was worth it. But now, I wouldn't wait to spit on it. Being sold 5 times in 30, and it was this last company who screwed it all up. By going cheap and fast, for profits sake. Greed destroys another American institution. If they are to have any chance, they need to bring the quality back, and slow down to bring the class back. And the curb-side service. You can fail at being just another fast food franchise, or you can succeed at being the last quality vintage family burger restaurant. They bought one, to make it into the other. Success lies with the unique and original ideas. Not the mass produced, cookie cutter, dime a dozen, prefabricated, cheap burger huts littered across the nation in every city and town. Until they get that, they will always fail.
The problem is service. Last time in Elizabethtown ky, we waited 45minutes after ordering and still no food. We paid for drinks and left. Have not been back since. Think the cooks were fighting. Manager did nothing to correct the problem,. If l were the manager, I would have fired the one causing to problem right there and told him to leave.
I'm not sure they have the finances to overcome the problems they currently face. Even then, their menu really misses the mark as more and more customers are looking for better options. My kids love Steak n' Shake and until the one here in Cincinnati recently closed the only healthy meal I could get was the side salad and a glass of water.

I love the Food, and the Prices are Good. But it takes entirely too long to get your food. Even when mostly empty it still takes 20 or mins to get a Small order is Crazy. I still hit the Stake & Shakes in the Metro Atlanta area often. Lavista Road and pleasant Hill being my main 2.
i work for steak n shake as a server, and the tea is, the higher ups don't care about the employees or managers just the money. the stores are so understaffed because they refuse to give raises but expect us to do triple the work. the stores are dirty because the managers don't care to make the employees clean and its sad.
They treat their employees terribly, I served all of my shifts by myself (including cash, hosting, busing) AND were forced to make shakes. I was a minor and they’d make me work the whole weekend, 12 hours a day, with no breaks. That’s illegal in Kentucky.
Steak and Shake came to Fresno, California for a minute then closed. The food was really good, and the restaurant was immaculate. The problem was the prices were way too high for the side of town the restaurant was located in. It would have done a lot better in a part of town where the income levels were higher. It even looked out of place in the location they chose.

Bad decisions on location placement, moving franchises out out of a few great locations, lack of putting franchises in large metro areas like the DC metro area like northern Virginia, they have one on a college campus which is not really open to a public use area. Just dumb marketing.

Sadly my only Steak 'n Shake experience was horrible. While waiting for a flight my sister and I went to eat there. The service was bad. They took the order quickly but the food took awhile. Upon receiving the food the waitress spilled the shake on me. I had to change clothes and hurry not to miss the flight. They comped the meal and I only went back once. Since then they've closed.
Absolute horrible customer service. While working third shift it was one of the few place open 24 hours. Well it was supposed to be. Ordered online once only to go over to pick it up, and find the place closed. Called the next day, asked for a refund (they charge your card when you place the order) and they tell me they can’t do that but they would replace my order...when they were open... Eventually I went to get my food, but from then on they were no longer an option. Eventually I decided to give them another chance, and for a few months it was good. Had a few issues with my order not being ready , but nothing major. Then one night made a online order only to go over and find the doors locked. Took 4 days to finally get in touch with the manager.
There was one outside of Cincy that closed earlier this year. Last time I was there was about 3 years ago. Service was almost non-existent. I waited in my booth almost a half hour for a burger, chili and drink with only a couple other customers there. The waited a few minutes to pay. No loss for me, as food was ok.
Given how our Steak 'n' Shake was, it's not surprising they closed ours. Well staffed, but the staff was more interested in their cell phones and talking behind the drinks counter than be out on the floor. Orders would often be messed up. Things would be missing (like spoons when ordering soups, side dishes ordered but not received). French fries were pushed completely. Even when you ordered NO fries, it was rung up no fries, you STILL got fries. While I understand it takes a while to make a milkshake, our store would usually make all the food and the customer had all the time to get and eat their meal, and THEN the shake would arrive (sometimes even after the customer got up with the check, paid, and left).
It's quite good and it's cheap. However, wait time can be quite long depending on the time of day. Last time I went, it was a 30 minute wait time. I decided to go someplace else because that 30 will then turn into 45 -50 minutes as then you still have to order your meal.
This is karma I used to work for them . There's no policy for dealing with violent or sexually harassing customers. Their management were so cruel to their part timers. I was physically threatened with a knife by a full-time employee and all corporate did was make me suck it up. Management took the employees side. I also had seen every single health violation in the book at my location from small stuff like storage and large scale cleaning. The management lawsuit is just as well the location was so understaffed I, the host, had to work on every single task in the building before I quit. But I've also been threatened by the company for speaking out afterwards. I'm glad things are catching up to them. Every location in my city is almost bad. So overall extremely poor treatment of staff and severe health violations should be considered before they should legally be allowed to survive.
My wife and I went to a Steak 'N Shake to get one of the milkshakes we saw in their commercials just like the ones in this video at 0:14. The serving glasses were about half the size that was advertised and they were overpriced. We never went back and the store has also gone out of business.
Maybe Sardar should cut his salary down like his idol Warren Buffett instead of trying to be the richest guy in business. I'm a former corp office employee who lost my job due to his business tactics. No sympathy here except for all the other employees who lost their jobs. What a jerk he is!
its not as good a deal as you might think. 50% of profit is a problem. Consider most of these places you ALSO MUST order your food from corporate commissary. They PROFIT from the commissary. so 50% profit might only be 25% profit after you account for your losses in commissary OR MORE. then add any other fees and charge from corporate. 50% starts to not sound so good when you realize how rigged the "cost" part is. At the place I worked at (not steak and shake) commissary prices for food items was higher than what I AS A CONSUMER could walk around the corner and pay. and this is why commissary tracks everything so precisely. to stop store owners from buying locally to cut costs because of the high commissary costs. buy 1 box of peppers and their computers and math could see it. they were that good. (otherwise known as greedy) I would not buy into a steak and shake for 50% profit. I would buy into it for 100% profit. and no fees or charges or any sort at all. period. They can make their money from the commissary.
I've been there only once but I was quite impressed. The meal was the same price as a meal at McDonald's, it's higher quality, and a server brings it to your table. I left a 50% tip just because it was so cheap. It's good for the consumer, but I do wonder how the business handles it.
It’s a shame. I tried to eat at two different locations recently. Service was slow and you get that jam up near the front door where some are in line to be seated and some are at the counter and some are trying to pay their check at the register.

As a very recent employee... This place deserves to shut down, at least my local one does. It was horribly run.

My grandfather use to run the gas stating Harper's on Main St. next to the Steak n' Shake. On Saturday's I would go with him in the morning to open Harper's. We would eat breakfast there, then lunch at noon. I loved it, nothing better for a kid.

I have to agree with you. The one by me recently closed down. Drive thru was painfully slow. Bad service but I did like the food. The water tasted like ass there me and my father have a joke about the ass water.

The last time I went to the one in Belleville, the waitress wouldn't get us milkshakes because the freezer was too far away, a customer started screaming at the manager, accusing our waitress of cursing them out, and they tried to serve my sister raw chicken. They're closed now. Too bad. I liked their chili.

When Biglari Holdings took over, the service became crap. For years any one you went into in St. Louis, the service was horrible. Employees just ignored customers, and served cold food or wouldn't even wait on you if you were lucky to get seated. The employees didn't care, the managers didn't care. I was not surprised when they all closed up in the area.

In Galesburg Illinois the store was hiring so i applied with my 20+ years experience . They told me they only start at minimum wage . Pretty sure there not going to get an experienced cook . Sad

Most of the time this happens because SnS uses paper receipts to keep track of who ordered what and when, and when you have a kid Working drive-through that doesn’t care about the job and is still in high school, they will lose the tickets quite frequently.
Go to Burger King and you’ll see that they have a screen that tells these sort of things; They do not rely on a piece of paper that can be easily lost to tell them what order is what and where and when it was ordered.
Do me a favor and next time come inside to eat. It will save you a lot of headache.

I mean there is usually 1 guy making burgers for inside and outside and 3 others running 12 stations at once because it is super under staff sometimes.. we use premium meat so it cooks longer as well. It is not that mcdonalds trash. If it was up to me I would have got rid of the drive through a long time ago. As I and many of my friends see it, SNS is a sit down, eat, and hang out with friends kind of restaurant not a fast food restaurant.

I don’t eat at Steak and Shake very often but when I do I always enjoy the burgers and fries. That being said I don’t eat out very often.
I’m in St Louis and they closed several close to me, one Steak and Shake cut the hours of service.
I have always liked Steak 'n Shake. Their style of burger is my favorite. However, it's become obvious to me that management is their problem, going all the way to the top. Nearly every complaint you see in reviews deals with service and that is the fault of management.

@@gregorsamsa1364 I'm not really sure I'm still trying to work that out, it could be anything really, there's too many factors. sure going to McDonald's for a dollar sandwich is fine it's the only way some people can eat due to their low income but that doesn't mean every single food place has to do the same thing besides most of the stuff that McDonald's has is somewhat precooked compared to steak'n'shake where they have to actually grilled the meat patties and fried the fries.

My local Steak N Shake closed. Which was not a surprise since service was extremely bad. The last time i went , the waitress welcomed us and wiped down the table at the same time which made her Newport cigs fallout of her shirt pocket . " Sorry Baby , let me get that out of your way." It was a 45 min wait for the burgers because the kitchen focused ALL their attention on the drive thru window while NO time on the dining room guest. The wait staff and the kitchen ended up screaming at each other.
I was very disappointed when the one in my area of Holland, MI was closed and I was even more disappointed that one of my buddies who worked there losing his job when this happened. steak n shake is one of my favorites too and the people who worked in the one in my area were nice and down to earth. so sad.
Their food is great and I personally like the sit down experience. However I suspect the issue is loss of sales due to drive through customers. While they have a drive through.....it is very slow. And most folks just seem to lazy to get out of their car and walk inside. Even if it is to go. I hope the ones by me stay open. I'll make sure I frequent them.

I will tell what the problem is with a lot of “fast food” restaurants theses days. They are slower than molasses in the winter time to get your food. You can literally go to a sit down restaurant at rush time, eat and be home before you even get your food at many fast food places, mc Donald’s and steak and shake and Burger King are the worst where I live. These places are full of employees but they just stand around and look at customers instead of waiting on people and doing their jobs. After orders are taken it’s forever before you get your food.
I worked for Stk N Shi in high school 40 + years ago, before they went corporate. They still had curb service back then ( drive in service). They have slipped somewhat, but I still think they do a good job. As far as the fries - I like them. They won several awards for their shoestring fries way back then.
Love Steak N'Shake but dang their drive thru takes forever. I always feel like I'm going to miss the birth of my first child I haven't even conceived yet.

It’s Simply sourdough bread with two burger patties and thousand Island (Frisco) sauce on the patties.
We charge two dollars for our drinks, But getting a meal reduces the two dollars to about $1.20.
Our food is honestly overpriced and I hate telling customers prices as a Drive Thru Operator, because guilt. Like, there’s McDonalds across the street which has much better prices, and a Burger King down the street, which has awesome deals. We have only Happy Hour as our deals, and the shitty 4 for 4 bargain, which is honestly a gimmick.
Us employees get a 40% discount on our lunch break meal, and it’s honestly the true price and what someone SHOULD be paying for at Steak N Shake.
In my overcrowded neck of the woods, there are only 3 locations. There are approximately 20 million lost and lonely souls crammed in these corner of the US, If there's opportunity to expand will be here. However, the minimum wage is up to $15.00 per hour that alone should be reason enough to stay the heck away from these areas.
They opened a new store here in Beaumont, TX a few months ago. When the training crew was here, it was great. Burgers were good. Fries were crunchy and delicious. The shakes were OK, but I have had better. I could even make a better shake. Then things settled down and the permanent, local crew took over. Now the seating is dead slow, even when tables are clearly unoccupied, the burgers went downhill. The fries are served getting cold and soggy. The local crew does not care. I won't be going back. IHoP is a half block away and they have excellent burgers. It isn't about "fast and friendly". It isn't about efficiency. It is about GOOD food. But corporate weenies just don't know that.
I love their garlic burgers. The best in town. Never really cared for their milkshakes but then again, I'm not a milkshake person. I like their breakfast allot and the prices in my area are really good. It sometimes is a long wait to get your food in my area (I think 20 mins. max but sometimes we got our food within five mins.), so I only eat there on days I'm not working. Ours needs to be remolded badly. The tiles in the floor are cracked all to hell and the seats are in poor condition. The service is friendly but under staffed and they need a bigger kitchen. Nevertheless, I love eating there and the food there is amazingly good (except the fried. I never liked their fries).

The Steak and Shake Frisco melt with bacon added is the best burger I've ever eaten! People complain about it taking so long, but that's why it's so good! Their stuff isn't sitting around under a warming light for hours like other places. It's made fresh to order.
I'm guessing u don't know what a good fresh made burger entails cuz steak shake is not a place to go if u want a good burger especially since I worked at one go to in n out for a great burger and real French fries not ones tht are frozen just thrown in the deep frier just god awful a patty is not supposed to be flattened like someone smashed the shit out of it it's supposed be juicey n plump so u get flavors
i work at the Steak ‘n Shake in snellville and the problem is just that there’s poor management and not enough employees to work at the restaurant. the employees get so mad with the employees, not knowing that we’re doing the best that we can, and im a server, doing the host job, Shake job, sometimes even dressing the burgers, plus check the customers out. TBH that's what happens when you try to add a drive-thru to a sit down restaurant. I think that's their biggest pitfall. Drive-thrus should be reserved for fast food only. When you have 10+ customers getting sit down service, there's no way you can make the drive-thru efficient.

I wont go to Steak n Shake. The reason is how long the wait is. Most of the time it's like 30 mins plus to get food, if not more.
Everything is made fresh. And if there are tables before you, it can take a bit. Plus they are strict on labor so it restricts how many employees are on at once, which makes it more difficult. There is a lot more to the job than what can I get you and ok here you go.

The death of Steak n' Shake is sad indeed. I only got to eat there while visiting a friend in Florida, but it was good enough to really stick with me.
Steak n' Shake started in my city, Bloomington Illinois. The original restaurant is still there, but it's not Sn'S anymore, it called the Iron Skillet, on Bun St.
I have stopped eating there because the original and classic chili, is not the chili they use to serve. Now it's some cheap knock off.
They use to serve Sn'S crackers too, that was perfect for their chili. But now it some East Coast seafood crackers, tastes different.
It was a few years before that change that I noticed they started to drown their steak burgers in seasoning salt, this is wrong. The original restaurant prided itself on the best pure flavor of the meat they used, no need to cover up the taste, it was mouth watering delicious.
It like taking the pure taste of Culver's Butterbugers and drowning them in salt. A same bad move that McDonald's did years ago, now they drown McD's burgers in salt and pepper, covering the taste of the beef.
Makes you wonder what it is that they are trying to cover up?
But the only thing I would say is close to the original Steak n' Shake is those fries. But even those have changed, they use to be golden and crispy. The last couple of time I went their, they were soft and under cooked.
The original owner took pride in his work, and the products he sold, quality was his selling point.
If you wanted fast food, Steak no Shake was not for you, but if you were willing to wait a couple of minutes for fresh quality food, then your were at the right spot.
It does not take a genius to figure out, what when wrong and when.
The new owners tried to change an already successful and established franchise, to make it quicker and cheaper. But that is not what Steak n' Shake was about. It's not fast food, it's good food quick. Yeah you might have to wait for your food, but it was worth it.
But now, I wouldn't wait to spit on it.
Being sold 5 times in 30, and it was this last company who screwed it all up. By going cheap and fast, for profits sake.

If they are to have any chance, they need to bring the quality back, and slow down to bring the class back. And the curb-side service.

Health dept shut down two locations in Toledo last summer. The video’s were shocking to say the least. We will never go there again!
The problem is service. Last time in Elizabethtown ky, we waited 45minutes after ordering and still no food. We paid for drinks and left. Have not been back since. Think the cooks were fighting. Manager did nothing to correct the problem,. If l were the manager, I would have fired the one causing to problem right there and told him to leave.
I'm not sure they have the finances to overcome the problems they currently face. Even then, their menu really misses the mark as more and more customers are looking for better options. My kids love Steak n' Shake and until the one here in Cincinnati recently closed the only healthy meal I could get was the side salad and a glass of water.

My parents work in a business where they are sometimes involved in building new Steak N Shake locations... They’re building a lot of new locations

I love the Food, and the Prices are Good. But it takes entirely too long to get your food. Even when mostly empty it still takes 20 or mins to get a Small order is Crazy. I still hit the Stake & Shakes in the Metro Atlanta area often. Lavista Road and pleasant Hill being my main 2.

i work for steak n shake as a server, and the tea is, the higher ups don't care about the employees or managers just the money. the stores are so understaffed because they refuse to give raises but expect us to do triple the work. the stores are dirty because the managers don't care to make the employees clean and its sad.

They treat their employees terribly, I served all of my shifts by myself (including cash, hosting, busing) AND were forced to make shakes. I was a minor and they’d make me work the whole weekend, 12 hours a day, with no breaks. That’s illegal in Kentucky.
Steak and Shake came to Fresno, California for a minute then closed. The food was really good, and the restaurant was immaculate. The problem was the prices were way too high for the side of town the restaurant was located in. It would have done a lot better in a part of town where the income levels were higher. It even looked out of place in the location they chose.

Bad decisions on location placement, moving franchises out out of a few great locations, lack of putting franchises in large metro areas like the DC metro area like northern Virginia, they have one on a college campus which is not really open to a public use area. Just dumb marketing.

Sadly my only Steak 'n Shake experience was horrible. While waiting for a flight my sister and I went to eat there. The service was bad. They took the order quickly but the food took awhile. Upon receiving the food the waitress spilled the shake on me. I had to change clothes and hurry not to miss the flight. They comped the meal and I only went back once. Since then they've closed.

Absolute horrible customer service. While working third shift it was one of the few place open 24 hours. Well it was supposed to be. Ordered online once only to go over to pick it up, and find the place closed. Called the next day, asked for a refund (they charge your card when you place the order) and they tell me they can’t do that but they would replace my order...when they were open... Eventually I went to get my food, but from then on they were no longer an option.
Eventually I decided to give them another chance, and for a few months it was good. Had a few issues with my order not being ready , but nothing major. Then one night made a online order only to go over and find the doors locked. Took 4 days to finally get in touch with the manager.
A Culvers butterburger is almost identical to a steak and shake burger.
There was one outside of Cincy that closed earlier this year. Last time I was there was about 3 years ago. Service was almost non-existent. I waited in my booth almost a half hour for a burger, chili and drink with only a couple other customers there. The waited a few minutes to pay. No loss for me, as food was ok.
Given how our Steak 'n' Shake was, it's not surprising they closed ours. Well staffed, but the staff was more interested in their cell phones and talking behind the drinks counter than be out on the floor. Orders would often be messed up. Things would be missing (like spoons when ordering soups, side dishes ordered but not received). French fries were pushed completely. Even when you ordered NO fries, it was rung up no fries, you STILL got fries. While I understand it takes a while to make a milkshake, our store would usually make all the food and the customer had all the time to get and eat their meal, and THEN the shake would arrive (sometimes even after the customer got up with the check, paid, and left).

It's quite good and it's cheap. However, wait time can be quite long depending on the time of day. Last time I went, it was a 30 minute wait time. I decided to go someplace else because that 30 will then turn into 45 -50 minutes as then you still have to order your meal.

This is karma I used to work for them . There's no policy for dealing with violent or sexually harassing customers. Their management were so cruel to their part timers. I was physically threatened with a knife by a full-time employee and all corporate did was make me suck it up. Management took the employees side. I also had seen every single health violation in the book at my location from small stuff like storage and large scale cleaning. The management lawsuit is just as well the location was so understaffed I, the host, had to work on every single task in the building before I quit. But I've also been threatened by the company for speaking out afterwards.
I'm glad things are catching up to them. Every location in my city is almost bad.
So overall extremely poor treatment of staff and severe health violations should be considered before they should legally be allowed to survive.

My wife and I went to a Steak 'N Shake to get one of the milkshakes we saw in their commercials just like the ones in this video at 0:14. The serving glasses were about half the size that was advertised and they were overpriced. We never went back and the store has also gone out of business.

its not as good a deal as you might think. 50% of profit is a problem. Consider most of these places you ALSO MUST order your food from corporate commissary. They PROFIT from the commissary. so 50% profit might only be 25% profit after you account for your losses in commissary OR MORE. then add any other fees and charge from corporate. 50% starts to not sound so good when you realize how rigged the "cost" part is.
At the place I worked at (not steak and shake) commissary prices for food items was higher than what I AS A CONSUMER could walk around the corner and pay. and this is why commissary tracks everything so precisely. to stop store owners from buying locally to cut costs because of the high commissary costs. buy 1 box of peppers and their computers and math could see it. they were that good. (otherwise known as greedy)
I would not buy into a steak and shake for 50% profit. I would buy into it for 100% profit. and no fees or charges or any sort at all. period.
They can make their money from the commissary.
I've been there only once but I was quite impressed. The meal was the same price as a meal at McDonald's, it's higher quality, and a server brings it to your table. I left a 50% tip just because it was so cheap. It's good for the consumer, but I do wonder how the business handles it.
It’s a shame. I tried to eat at two different locations recently. Service was slow and you get that jam up near the front door where some are in line to be seated and some are at the counter and some are trying to pay their check at the register.
