- Polycythemia is a disorder of the blood in which there is an increase in all the blood cells , predominantly the RBCs causing an elevated hematocrit levels. This causes thickening of blood and leads to clot formation and bleeding in patients. This is sometimes also a form of blood cancer.
The bone marrow at a later stage may enter a burnt out or spent phase in which the bone marrow is replaced with scar tissues and is unable to produce the blood cells adequately. patients thus can develop myefibrosis, myeloid dysplastic syndrome and acute myeloid leukemia.
polycythemia is divided into 2 types, primary polycythemia and secondary polycythemia.
primary polycythemia occurs due to dysfunction of the bone marrow while secondary occurs due to another preliminary disease or condition such as high altitudes, oxygen reduction, renal cancer, etc which increases erythropoietin production.
Patient with polycythemia usually have tinnitus, ruddy complexion, headaches, dizziness, paresthesias, fatigue, venous inflammation, pain, chest pain and breathing difficulty.
They also develops pruritus, hypertension, erythromyalgia, gout and kidney stones.
The patients have clotting and bleeding both and thus develops complications of the same. Patient will thus have GI bleed, hematuria, Intracranial hemorrhage, nosebleed and also suffer from peripheral artery disease, myocardial infarction and stroke.
Diagnosis of polycythemia is through hematocrit levels and the treatment includes phlebotomy in which the vein is punctured and 500 ml around blood is removed once or twice weekly.
patients are also treated with chemotherapy with drugs like hyrdoxyurea that causes bone marrow suppression but increases risk of leukemia in this patients.
anagrelide will be used to treat and interferon alpha 2 b will be used for the treatment of pruritus. patients with gout and kidney stones will also recieve allopurinol.

Hello can I take whey and casein protein supplements,my heamoglobin is 18.9 and RBC is 6.36??
Hi. My advice would be to avoid these supplements as a research study did show elevation of RBC and hemoglobin after this supplementation.

Mam mera hemoglobin 16.7 hai Rcb 5.73 ye normal hai ya nahi
Hemoglobin thoda jyada hai aur RBC count bhi thoda jyada hai. But bohot saare factors ke vajah se ye ho sakta hai. Thode time baad forse check kar lena.
