This movie crushed me when I saw it at 14, on cable. The writer based this story on his own experience when he was the same age as Hermie. After seeing it, the lady who he had that experience with actually found him and contacted him, and apologized if what had happened so many years before had hurt him or caused him harm.
Dorothy was out of her mind with grief, and clearly, highly distraught. Herman Raucher, the author, plainly stated that actual sexual intercourse did NOT occur that night, despite the widespread belief that it did.
I understand one of the definitions of nostalgia is "pain from an old wound." Another is "Summer of '42." What a timeless classic.

Gary Grimes was a great actor!! I'm rather sad he left his craft. But, I understand his need to do other, more giving, things. ❤

Great movie. The love scene was so toned down though.
Yet...if the movie portrayed a young widowed man who wooed a 14 year old girl...would we feel the same about the movie?
