  • The Jolson Story is a 1946 musical biography which purports to tell the life story of singer Al Jolson. It stars Larry Parks as Jolson, Evelyn Keyes as "Julie Benson" (approximating Jolson's wife, Ruby Keeler), William Demarest as his manager, Ludwig Donath and Tamara Shayne as his parents, and Scotty Beckett as the young Jolson.
    Thankyou for watching.

    Watching Al Jolson, my favourite all time singer, brings tears to my eyes.It's so hard to believe that he's been dead for 60 years. Thank you for these memories.

      The real Al Jolson looked a lot different. But what a voice he had. I still enjoy hearing his singing. and watching this movie and the follow up.

    I always find the ending very moving. When she kisses Steve goodbye, then takes that last look and then turns and walks out the door as Al sings on, oblivious. Beautifully done.

    I love this movie; can't tell you how many times I watched it as a kid, and how much I love Jolie's voice. He was unique. Larry Parks was brilliant in the role. I watched the movie so many times, I memorized all the songs. An old girl friend was William Demarest's neighbor.

    I was 3 years old when the film was made and remember my parents taking me to see it when I was still a wee boy and even now at the age of 67 the voice still brings tears to my eyes. My wife and daughter think I'm daft but the man was a real super star.

    Man, I'm\jealous too! I wish I could have been there! That night club my grandfather worked at used to bring in all the best acts, benny goodman, frank sinatra, glenn miller, etc and of all the great entertainers that were paid to play there, that "Jolson story" (pun intended!) was his favorite.
    Both my grandparents lived near Coney Island and they used to tell stories about Jolson singing at a club called "Feldman's" where Eddie Cantor and Jimmy Durante worked as singing waiters!

    Ruby Keeler, the real life wife of Al Jolson and a prominent dancing star in the 1930's, had a turbulent marriage to Jolson and did want a more bucolic life as portrayed in "The Jolson Story". Jolson accompanied Keeler to a farmhouse that they bought and allegedly, Jolson was seen singing for a group of local residents in a hardware store; he was compelled to perform and entertain. His next marriage to a nurse, portrayed in the sequel by Barbara Hale, was successful.The film was an enormous hit.

    Although this is as with most film biopics of the time, an idealised version of Jolson's life. One of the truest things was Jolson's love of performing to an audience anywhere anytime. My Grandfather a waiter at the 400 Club in NYC witnessed this in the 40's when Jolson came in for a late dinner and he was asked to sing a number and then sang for hours to a spellbound house of very surprised and appreciate patrons and staff. My Grandma and Mom were there for the late show and saw it too.

    The interesting thing is that people who saw Jolson on stage say that Jolson on film was a shadow of what he was really like in on stage. He himself felt constrained by the method of filming at the time as he was famous for ad-libbing jokes. as well as the tempo of the song, often changing lyrics, stopping the song to tell a story, going into the audience, etc. Also he dearly missed the lack of a real audience on the sound stages, which really fed him and he gave back in large doses to them.

    This event seems to have been taken from an episode that occurred after Jolson married his fourth wife. Jolson was spotted with his young wife at an appreciation of Sophie Tucker. Despite Jolson's best efforts to turn attention back to Sophie Tucker or to introduce his wife, the crowd would not be satisfied until Jolson sang. It was the first time his new wife heard him sing for an audience.

    Parks might have had quite a career had he not been black-listed as a communist.

    @lannybuddy
    yes but here we are refering to the movie that is a fictional account of the al jolson life.
    so in the movie here it always seemed to me that soonn when he first looked at his daughter in law at the club, it was to say this is what he, al jolson needs to her.
    then again you say he would not be in the nightclub so perhaps that emphasies even more that he planned some version of this in hope of cheering up his son.

    She makes the guy give up what he was born to do, then when he's forced to go back to it, she leaves him! She must have loved him very much. If he had been a famous brain surgeon, would she have made him give that up, too? I don't think so. You see, singing for crowds wasn't refined up for her narcissistic ego. Good riddance to her.

    • @jamesbyersmusic
      @jamesbyersmusic 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes.... but it's actually not reality at all.
      Ruby Keeler never forced Jolson to quit, he just fell out favour so a "retirement" was a spoonful of creative licence for the film. Even during that period however, he was always hosting his shows on the radio.
