  • Posted by the International Al Jolson Society, www.jolson.org, this is an excerpt of the 23 Jul 1944 broadcast of Your All Time Hit Parade, starring Tommy Dorsey with guest star Al Jolson, and illustrated with images of the stars, real and composite, to get a feeling for the broadcast. Recovering from illness contracted while entertaining the troops in World War II, Al Jolson appeared on just this program during the summer of 1944. Singing two songs, one of which, "April Showers," is featured in this video podcast, he continued the work he started to maintain the morale of our fighting men and women. Harry von Zell is also featured on this broadcast. The complete broadcast, along with other Jolson radio shows, is available at the Official Al Jolson Website at www.jolson.org, from its posting in July through the end of August.

    No one can compare. There was only one. I’m blessed to have heard this magnificent voice. I was born in 41 and here it is 2022. I play one of his songs every day. Gotta have a Jolie fix.

    For a man to still sing like this in spite of him losing a lung is incredible; how many other entertainers could have pulled this off? only one Jolson.

      Bing Crosby, who was also missing most of a lung towards the end of his career.

      Jolson’s voice got better with age. He seemed to have settled down & mellowed out.

    I appreciate the airing of the talented and gifted Al Jolson from his radio broadcasts. It was a sad and memorable day in October 1950 when I heard on the radio that Al Jolson had died.

      @@MarcLeavey I just noticed the Stethoscope in your Photo, Marc And after all these years I’ve NEVER realized that you are a Doctor !
      I wish that you were in Flushing New York ( my hometown )... I should go to my Doctors a bit more often...but I never seem to be very confident in them . I have a bit of peripheral neuropathy in my feet ( it’s under pretty good control ) but I have a more worrisome problem that was discovered about 10 years ago: an Aortic Aneurysm . I take Cozaar ( for around 8 years )..and my Blood Pressure has been very good...( I check it every couple of weeks )...but about 5 years back I stopped seeing any Cardiologist because of a very bad experience taking that dye test in the veins. i know I’m supposed to check it yearly to make sure that it doesn’t get bigger but I just can’t deal with it psychologically.... I’ve always been in good health throughout my life till these recent situations.
      I’m just keeping my fingers crossed... I’m 68 now and hope that I have some Mazel in these years.......Sorry to bother you with my tsurus ...I much prefer to Play my Piano ...lots of Rachmaninoff...( I hold a Masters Degree From Juilliard in Piano M.M. 1977 ) .
      Thanks for making my life and ALL your club members lives so much better with your passion for the One and ONLY Al Jolson !

      @@alanbash2921 Yes, I retired from my practice in 2018, after 43 years as a primary internal medicine physician. My sincere advice to you is to return to regular care, keep in touch with your primary physician, and don't be afraid to ask questions if something does not seem right or is unclear. Stuff happens, whether you want it to or not, and being prudent and prepared is the best way to mitigate what can be prevented. -- Now, as to Jolson, I am glad that you enjoy the material. That you says "your club members" suggests that you are yet to be a part of the group. There will be a new Jolson Journal coming out later this month, and, of course, the Virtual Festival in May, as well as other items. Please do check out the IAJS at www.jolson.org - and click the link to join, and check out the pathways you can take.

    Don't see any string section in the orchestra, yet the orchestration is mainly strings. Is it really the Tommy Dorsey band providing background accompaniment, or is this site pulling our leg!?!

    • @MarcLeavey
      @MarcLeavey  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes, it is really the Tommy Dorsey Band, as you could hear in the complete radio show. There are no photos of Jolson with the band, thus this composite with a stock photo of TJ.
