The Television Affair: Episode 5 - Pan European Satellite (The Analogue years) Part 2

  • It's a very delayed edition of the television affair... I will explain more about this below.
We're continuing from where we left off in the last episode, looking into the satellite channels you could have got in the UK from other broadcasters (and a few if you twiddled with your dish a bit) many of which were in a different language, but broadcast for nearby countries. For some we’ll look at their roots, touch on their home service or look into the sister stations.
In this edition, we look at the prank I played on my uncle with Bernd Das Brot from Kids Channel Kika, The origins of Tele 5, A station in Serbia station that was bombed by Nato along with it's days as a propaganda machine, another station that didn't last as long as it should for some reason or another, and a brief look at some BBC channels you might not have known were a thing.
There was a massive delay in getting this video out. I'd intended it to come out a few days after episode 4 but I had an internet outage, and I was using mobile internet. Plus it was the start of the kids holiday so haven't been able to concentrate so well on the video but I got there in the end. Got some more exciting videos to come.
Finally... If you love the videos and would like to help me make more, you can now tip me. In the short term this means I can get myself a drink (Non alcoholic by the way) whilst making these videos. I find having a drink with me while I'm editing can really help a lot and keeps me hydrated. It can sometimes take a while to go through loads of old TV and find the good bits. In the long term I'd love to update my equipment - it's all getting on a bit now.
    If you're interested in contributing:
Minimum donation is £2, and you'll get a credit on my site where I post all videos.
If you donate £5 or more I'll put you in the credits for a month (or a minimum 4 videos if it's a slow month).
If you donate £10 or more I'll mention you at the thanks at the end for a month (or a minimum 4 videos if it's a slow month).
If you donate more than £20 I'll add you as an Executive Producer

I remember when I worked at Teddington in the mid 90's seeing the TX 'suite' for a 24 hour version of Quantum. It was a cupboard at the back of their VT area and was just someone sitting watching it and changing tapes every hour or two. No-one seemed to know where it went, how it got there or who watched it.

A few little fun facts to add:
I always remember that Quantum must have been uplinked from a different location than Eurosport. The transition between the two channels was rarely smooth, it wasn't uncommon for the signal to cut out completely in between.
MBC used the same test card as the BSB channels did, just with a different centre picture.
JSTV is winding down at the moment and will close completely in October.
Finally, the old Atlantic 252 radio mast was demolished earlier this month.

I’ve just woken up and been reminded of the “shorts” section on the Children’s Channel. You’ll probably remember since you covered Telecat… but they would introduce these 10 second cartoons by way of a washing machine and then there’d be about five minutes worth of them.
One of which I’m sure was called “Dragon” or “Dragoon” and featured a big dragon being annoyed by a small one (I think one was pink and the other blue) and I thought it was so brilliant, I even tried to animate it on my Amiga in Deluxe Paint.

I really miss the days of international TV. My main memory of polish channels was that instead of subbing or dubbing foreign shows they would leave the original soundtrack intact and then get a single person to talk over it in Polish, 1 person for all characters and in a very monotone voice

You criticise the polish channel for having its head appointed by its right wing government but the head of the BBC is appointed by our right wing government too.

    • @jonkasonic
      @jonkasonic  ปีที่แล้ว

The bbc has a historuc reputation of being left wing during its time in the 1980s and right now, both times when we had a right wing government. Both right wing and left wing aligned people say that the bbc is bias to the other side, but thus would happen if you were being impartial.
Our government has been recently been trying to find a way of inserting a director General who has the same views as them, however the structure of the bbc is set up that it holds itself accountable.
It's tax funded but not government funded and its indepentent from government- during the Conservatives time in power, they have been very critical of the bbc - they hate it because they can’t control it. The bbc holds them to account and it makes the government look bad. It has recently come under fire because some of the bbcs board appointments were Conservative aligned, and the government does appoint some of those positions but the bbc board in general from what I understand is impartial as a whole.
The government DO want to be in charge of the bbc, but in it's current form it's not able to do that. It's also (despite criticism in recent years for scandals involving individual entertainers and criticism over their pay) the most trusted and accurate news source in the UK and the world.
