  • It seems like everyone wants to quit their traditional 9-5 job and pursue their dreams of internet fame. I still work a full time job and I do TH-cam on the side. In this video I talk through my thinking and what would need to happen for me to pursue TH-cam full time.

You have to have a hell of a lot of self-awareness. Some people are lucky 🍀 but the rest of us have to really figure out how to make it work. I think it entirely depends on what life obligations you have, your personal risk tolerance, how you handle stress, etc. I made the mistake of quitting too early and it burnt me out BAD. I probably will never quit until my self-employment stuff has Cashflow + savings + investments

I really enjoy your content and you are very relatable. What I usually see with those pursuing YT is that they tend to lose relatability as they are longer out of the traditional work force.
Best of luck with your channel!

Thanks for the kind words! Totally agree about relatability with people that are still working regular jobs.

Loved the intro. Good balance between everything. That survivor analogy hit the spot.

I think for new viewers, it would be good if you had some of your other videos (like ones you referred to in this one) attacked via the upper right corner bubble. Not sure what it’s called. If you already have, I can’t see it on my phone.

I liked that you gave actual examples of TH-camrs that did what you want to do.

I quit programming at the age of 25 to explore new opportunities. Unless you're really sure about your passion, keep the high paying job and invest aggressively while keeping your expenses as low as possible. Grind it out for a couple of years and you'll have much more freedom. In my case, I completed a few courses to work in construction and I didn't enjoy it. I tried starting an Amazon store and another business. I also worked freelance as a programmer for the first time. It all sucks. Regardless of what you are doing, invest 25% of your income.

Sean Cannel from Think Media did that too. I wish I could. Living in California and being the "bread winner" and the one that carries all our insurance, dental and medical, for free. Kinda can't lol. I really hope to get to a point where I can for sure

While TH-cam is a risk, what about working 2 jobs until you can buy enough rental properties to not have to work at all?

It’s not a bad approach at all. I know almost nothing about real estate so it seems daunting to me but it’s probably a pretty sure bet.

In order for one to be able to live off of rental properties, you will have to have more than 10 of those. In reality rentals do not make a lot of profit, after deducing interests which are high these days, insurances, property taxes, management fees, and maintenance and repairs. A good number of investors are even negative gearing for the sake of capital growth and sometimes tax reduction. As an illustration a yield of 8% is seen as huge in the market. Thats OK when interest rates are under 3%... but even then that does not account for those expenses and even still... 8% of say 1 million is only $80000. In other words if you have a portfolio of a million dollar , freehold and ignoring expenses you are getting 80k. Not enough to live off of. It gets even worse that 8% is very optimistic and often assumes 100% occupancy. Ok... u see the gist

If i May give my opinion, a lot of your content is about working and careers, so maybe don’t quit your job because a lot of your content is from your job. Although if you made more career videos outside of your job that would be cool.

Listen to Cortex podcast. The immensely popular TH-camr cgp grey talks about how he prepared to go full time from having been a teacher.
