    Nice review Pete. Love Alan Parsons. Going Home is also a cover, there is a version by Annie Haslam on TH-cam. The tune is a variation on Dvorak's New World Symphony and was used for many years in the UK advert for Hovis bread.

    Will always have much respect for Alan Parsons especially since he was one of the very first artists to get me into prog. Those first 2 albums were awesome. But I'm willing to check out this new one.
    Cool that Bonamassa is a part of it as well. Sounds encouraging.

    I enjoyed your review. I had no idea Alan has been producing new works. The last CD I got was Gaudi. I bought all of his albums during the 80s. I’ve been a big fan of the Alan Parsons Project. I listened to this new one on Spotify and it hasn’t made me go wow! It does remind me of Vintage Alan like you said, but there’s no stand out hits like Eye In The Sky or Turn of A Friendly Card. I’ll buy it at some point, but not yet. I agree with your rating of 3 out of 5 stars.

    I didn't really get into the last AP album (called The Secret), but I don't mind this one. I think the vocals are much better and the songs sound less forced in general. Of course, it's not up to some of the classic albums, but I like it well enough. Though I agree that "Be My Baby" is pretty useless. Great song, but why cover what was already so good? Thanks for the video, Pete!

  • @actorJSB

    Pretty much with you word for word on this one Pete. Worth mentioning that the opener, Fare Thee Well, is a nice tribute to Eric Woolfson and works very well in that context. Didn't expect another one so soon after The Secret (and a bit confused as to why the track The Secret is on here, rather than there, but never mind) but think it's a minor improvement on that album - is it up there with classic Project albums...no, obviously not, but it IS a good addition to the catalogue....apart from that stupid cover at the end (and his liner notes referring to Spector's 'poor reputation in later life' seem somewhat misjudged too...yes, most convicted murderers and nutjobs have a poor reputation...!!!)

    • @jimmycampbell78
      @jimmycampbell78 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s just classic English politeness as in the UK its simply considered very ‘bad form’ to speak ill of the dead, even if they are bad people. I know times are changing and people complained about Spector’s obituaries at the time. But I am sure Alan would agree with you and was not trying to downplay what Spector did, his choice of words was for the reason I stated.

    Love this record!! On a side note I am also blown the heck away by Porcupine Trees new release! My God! Brilliance. Check that asap. Them and Dream Theater seem to be a great comparison, counterparts almost. Can't decide who I like more??With Wilson produced and Gavin drumming they are a juggernaut of talent. Petrucci with DT being the standout talent maybe rising or tipping the scale to DT? Vocals, well I like PT, has a bit of Maynard and Tool vibe at times. Very interesting to me. Highly recommend this new release from Porcupine Tree, prog and metal and melodies abound throughout. Back to the Parsons, what a great listen! David Pack, yes, sounds great, love Ambrosia and that whole 77 78 vibe. To be honest although this album is a distinct improvement on ‘The Secret’ it falls well short of many/most previous Parsons efforts. In the post ‘project’ phase ‘Try anything Once’ and ‘A Valid Path’ are pretty much on par with the Project. I particularly liked the collaboration with Shpongle on Valid Path and the strong use of guest players. This album certainly has a few decent tracks with Shaw’s Ourobouros as a stand out. Unfortunately A number of the other songs have the lyrical subtlety of a sledgehammer.
    It is worth noting that this album clearly shows how much Alan is thinking about the end (which seems like it is very much in sight from the sound of it). As usual exceptional production but it is painfully obvious how much better a lyricist Mr. Woolfson was.

    It's worth noting 'Fare Thee Well' is a tribute to Eric Woolfson (now deceased), Alan Parson's partner in the APP-- (He retired the name 'Alan Parsons Project' when he and Woolfson went separate ways); the song namechecks a variety of APP songs and even Wolfson himself. Also, an interesting coincidence/confluence; - from the last Styx album 'Crash Of The Crown' on the song 'A Monster', Tommy Shaw is singing about a monster 'chasing his tail' and then on Alan’s new album, Tommy sings about a 'Uroboros' which traditionally is a serpent or dragon eating its own tail. Of course it may be a favorite / familiar idea for Parsons as that imagery was used for the cover of the APP album 'Vulture Culture' as well. This album, albeit without an instrumental track, reminds me of the albums Eve or Pyramid era of the APP. Lots to discover with this one one of my faves of the year! P.S. I agree about 'Be My Baby' is out of place really, but Alan said in the liner notes he always wanted to pay tribute to Spector's prouction techniques. This song 'fills' the space somewhere on the album where normally there would be an instrumental (I think they kept single vinyl on purpose).

    Like "The Secret ", this comes across as Alan Parsons Lite! They both are missing the selection of great vocalists and Iain Bairnson's melodic guitar work . There are no strong singers of the likes of Chris Thompson, John MIles [ RIP] and Colin Blunstone - to name a few .And unforunately, it shows . Tommy Shaw is a great singer - I love Styx - but he does't fit on an AP album . THe best singer on this album would be David Pack. And let's admit it, Alan's voice has never been the strongest , throughout his career. Both albums could have been so much more.

The next tree tracks are kinda sappy. Things pick up again with "You Are The Light". "Halos" is OK. Skipped the last two - a cover of The Ronettes' "Be My Baby" - really? Overall 4 pretty good songs out of 11. I'd give this one maybe a 2.8/3 out of 5. The Time Machine & Try Anything Once are better albums, so are I Robot & Livespan. Parsons also released One Note Symphony (Live In Tel Aviv) this year, very symphonic obviously. For live last year's The Neverending Show: Live In The Netherlands is better

    Mr. Pardo's ignorance of how the Alan Parsons Project functioned is shocking. "It's kinda really no different'" he says. Absolute tosh.
    The project was primarily Eric Woolfson's idea and the compositions were largely his, melodically and lyrically, and so once he was gone, there was no more 'Project'.
    This is why the solo albums, including this one, are dull and uninspired. If Mr. Pardo wants his channel to grow, he should be far more rigorous with his analysis.

      Tendentious? The information about Woolfson is in the public sphere and given Pardo's many remarks on his love for APP and his penchant for researching bands, my comment is entirely reasonable, serving an accurate rejoinder and pushing no point of view.
      No self-awareness? Ahh, that old chestnut to take down someone.

      @tho2295 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree with Mark Chivers (except when he says that the solo albums are “dull and uninspired”). The fact that TAPP was a collaboration between Alan Parsons and Eric Woolfson which ended in 1990 which is why every album since then is released as a solo album should be minimum knowledge of anyone reviewing an AP album (and claiming to be interested in his career or liking his music). If the reviewer wonders why there is not the project name on the CD why not do a quick Google research BEFORE making a review? This review actually gives zero information about the music really. Everyone can read the credits in the internet. By the way Alan often used to challenge the smartness of his fans, which he again did with the inclusion of “Be My Baby” except that this time he gave the “resolution” in the liner notes. Everything Alan does is thought through and makes perfect sense. To me that track (like “Goin’ Home” preceding it) gives the sense of him coming full circle with his life and career. As Eric was a Fan of Phil Spector (whose production style was used on “Don’t Answer Me”) it is a tribute and dedication to Eric as well (as was the first track “Fare Thee Well”). I’m sure Alan enjoyed this track in 1963 as a teenager, so it’s a glimpse back to early youth.
