That landing is better than the MI 4k. The flight time is with everything turned off. But with only 3 cycles on the battery, a 25 min flight time is pretty good. Great review, and now I've got another drone to buy. Thanks Dustin!
Hi Dustin, I have the same problem with exiting the smart lock flight modes on the X8, it doesn't exit at all and you can't use app whilst you cannot exit these modes. You have to exit the app all together and reopen. No issues like this with any of the other flight modes. I have the same return to home landing inaccuracies of up to one metre from take off point. Auto camera settings to colour saturation and contrast need to be improved by FIMI. Love the expandable controller. But the X8 surely is a fun drone to fly. For the budget price it's an good drone.
For $400 ish drone , I'd say it performed very well. Image quality is great with lots of options for adjustment. Stability seemed good. Run time excellent for it's size. And it seems they are constantly updating the firmware, which leads me to believe it will only get better. Sounds like a win. Or pay 3 times that for a comparable DJI.
I got my FIMI X8 a few days ago and did a 2.3 km flight yesterday over a big forest. I see no flight logs getting recorded in the FIMI app. That flight logs helped me big time to locate my crashed Xiaomi mi 4k drone when it lost a motor in flight and crashed. FIMI: PLEASE ADD FLIGHT LOGS TO THE APP!!!
The technology inside the spark is superior in so many ways. It takes a lot of computer power to keep a drone steady and still in the wind. Every little breeze or gust is corrected in real time by minute changes in electrical signals going to the motors in milliseconds. Hundreds if not thousands of commands are sent to the motors to keep the drone predictable. Its this trust I have developed flying DJI products that makes me go out and buy their drones. The spark can not come close to the distance or flight time of this drone.. but quality over quantity. I’d rather have an amazing 1080P vid, ( good enough for 99999% of media devices that might preview the footage) then an unsteady image. I flew my mavic air in 20 mile per hour winds, with maybe 30 mph gusts, and the footage was almost as still as if the camera was on a stand. I love drones for one main reason... a computer , can play games, watch Netflix, stream porn, write programs , reports, send mean e mails to your ex , creep on co workers facebook accounts, watch TH-cam.... etc... lots and lots of stuff. But can it float in the air , staying in place, compensating for Mother Nature , then fly 2 miles away, 300 feet up in the air, all while recording pictures and video. Drones are in my opinion the closest thing to a robot that the exponential nature of technology and computing power has created. I’m basically saying you cant get a better combination of hardware and software that fits in your pocket. Most of you guys don’t know about other software that exists that make drones data gathering machines for software that can virtually create 3D images, accurate to within a hair in scale. So much more is going on inside a well designed drone then most people think of.

Dustin, thanks for this video. I was just minutes before ordering this drone before I decided to see if you had reviewed it yet. Changed my mind immediately and ordered a Mavic Mini instead. I have flown a Xiaomi mi since it came out and thought it was great until I bought a Mavic Pro 18 months ago. Although the Mavic has a fantastic camera by comparison, on really windy days the mi is a absolute workhorse for flying for pure enjoyment.

Hey Dustin, Great review! Looks like it flies well and the gimbal worked great. Nice and smooth. The camera was a little blue at first but consistent, when you switched to sunny it was more yellow at first but it would flash blue and correct itself. Probably best to leave it blue and fix in post then you don’t get the flashes. Maybe they can fix it in a firmware update. Looking forward to your tests on the smart functions and range test. From the couple of things you did try the smart functions aren’t half bad. I’ve seen worse but they need some work. I was interested in the Zino but got scared off by the bad reviews and Hubsan dragging there heals fixing the problems. Yes all reviews I’ve seen, Zino does have flight control problems, looses altitude in a left turn and gains altitude in a right turn. So I decided to get a Phantom 3 Pro instead. It’s a tried and proven drone and was about the cost of the Zino. The batteries are a lot more expensive though but I think it’s going to be a better camera drone for me. I’m looking forward to flying the P3P and my Spark but it’s too cold here in Canada right now. 🥶 I love your attention to detail and don’t mind if you make 3,4 or 5 videos testing the same drone. I find your thoroughness and honesty refreshing. Keep it up.🤙--Doug
Im sure your probably aware by now , but the precision landing requires the gimbal looking down for it to detect the landing pad so it can re-position and the active track where it lost you as you walked under the drone , there is another option in the settings to allow backwards flying in smart track

Woot woot! Yes! The flight review! Thanks Dustin! Edit: after watching the entire video I noticed the slight blue hue when you changed it to sunny it was better but when it was exposed to different lighting for small moments it was flash super blue then correct itself. Definitely needs work on the tracking and follow me features. But overall not bad at all. I never harshly judge tech when it just comes out to give then the benefit of the doubt. Now if it was like this after a year or 2 I'd be like ehhhh..

Still, it's probably unfair to judge the noise of the Fimi when it has to fight the wind? I kind of expect the X8 to have much more shelf life than the anafi, so I'm hoping it's still in with a chance...
I appreciate the quality in-depth reviews on all of your drone review videos. I own a DJI Spark and watching this review, I would personally buy the Fimi X8 if it were the same price as the Spark.
I have the 2020 model, only issue I've had with the drone so far is how much it drifts on it's own when hovering. It's incredible with that exception, if they could make it hover more stable it would be pretty much perfect for my needs. I use it above our construction sites to do small clips of the machines working and it's a little too unstable for me to just leave it without being on the sticks all the time.

Looks good, I thought the camera quality is pretty good. God knows how they expect you to review something like this with only one battery. I am actually thinking of dumping my Mavic pro and getting this and banking the difference but I’ll wait until you’ve finished evaluating properly. Looks like the speed telemetry is completely borked, and the 'follow me' could be better. But it's still impressive in most other respects for the price. I'm slightly worried about that controller's slide sagging and getting sloppy after a while? 🤔

like the VID and the review but as an old user for MI Dron 4K from the moment I change to my MAVIC I am really in love with the App, the Device itself and the safety you had on it. I have to say even I had a problem with the MiDron and I sent the part to the factory as they told me and after more than 5 months NOBODY contacted me about it and not even answering my request of what happened with all this issue so, Be aware and keep away from this Brand, if you ever have any problem you´ll be totally stuck and with no solutions. Good Job and clear explanations, as usual..!!
Nice review, can't wait for part 2. Hopefully the Mfg will fix the glitches. This bird is in my budget range. The SD card puller would be a handy item for my dash cam as well. Suggesting you consider it as a give away.

Just catching up with these videos now, I wonder how many of those cons they have fixed in the meantime. This is the drone I am going to buy next. I've been watching your reviews for a few months now , and in my opinion yours are the best of all the others I have watched. I'm over 60 and new to drones. I purchased a mavic pro a few months ago shortly after the mavic 2 came out because of some great sales on the old model. I live in Philippines so am still waiting for it to arrive should be around mid March . ( could have bought in Asia but no sales here so figured I could wait , if I saved 50%). After watching this review I think I will order one of these while waiting on the mavic . Bangood says this is still pre-order , how long did you have to wait for yours , and how long do you think till extra batteries will become available for it. I have friends that have different DJI and an Autel Evo but am hoping this new one will actually be a quality drone to take away Some of the monopoly DJI and Autel currently have. Looking foreward to the next part of this review.
This model definitely needs some landing gear extensions to cope with the grass/gimbal contact issue. This video is a year old now so hopefully some of the con issues have been resolved through updates?
If one sees that flimsy gimbal protection for instance as a fault, one may come to "lots". But generally I think the title does not do that fine drone justice. Otherwise, another great video!

Hey. Good review as always. I have a question: I bought one of these and it's great. But I notice that the bottom of the drone (heatsink I guess) seems to get very hot. Even when the drone is sitting there with the motors off after being powered on. 5 minutes just sitting there and it is already quite seriously hot. I'm a little new to drones like this so don't know if this is normal or a defect. What do you think? Thanks!

For the price still looking good. The cons are just software things that I'm sure they will fix soon. Like to see range test you've already don and see longer range test in future!
I was immidiately contacted by Xiaomi after posting this range test and they said the performance was unacceptable. They pushed an update yesterday for camera and range improvement's. We'll see how it does

Full stick down with a drone is a very dangerous thing. I avoid that every time, remembering also helicopters, which could crash due to the vortex state, which could also happen with drones, afaik. But thanks for the review! - Sounds very interesting in general, but without obstacle sensors, this is a big bummer.
What do u mean big bummer ive been flying for years with obstacle Avoidance want to avoid obstacle dont fly to close to and object plain and simple and yes i have many quads alot with out obstacle av and a few with it. Makes me no difference i learnt how to fly the hard way in the early days of quads with out all that stuff we have on them these days. That really a kid can fly them. It takes away some of the fun of flying. Yeah that stuff is all good. But there's nothing like just flying and watch the hell where we are flying is exciting to me. I dont like any thing in life to easy. I like a little bit of being on the edge.
I am very interested in this and also waiting to hear about the “pro” version too. I would prefer this to the Mavic Mini purely for the 4K capability. I don’t care about this one having fewer sensors, it can still do all the automated flight tricks vs the Mini. Ps. Do you know the payload of this drone? Could I mount a GoPro to the top? I think it will be fine, just the flight time will take a hit
It could definitely hold a GoPro but yes, flight time would take a big hit from added weight. Not sure on max payload. The X8 has similar sensors to the Mavic Mimi (only downward ground sensing).

Great review, however I was wanting to ask your (and the other commenters, of course) opinion on a question I'm sure you've more than likely already answered for the umpteenth time. But- as a guy who hasn't been fortunate enough to test many different types or brands- only for the few moments my friends/family would happen to have one to toy with, my question would have to be What would your input be for someone attempting to decide between the Mavic Mini, and the Fimi X8 SE? I've seen many, many reviews and I don't believe I've ever had this much trouble sorting out which piece of tech to go with. Just as a hobby flier, and spur of the moment flying, and things of that nature. I've always been under the impression that DJI was a more reliable tech to lean towards, but I believe its partially biased as the first drone I had flown had been a DJI, but I'm not in a position to make a purchase without at least attempting to compile the best info for a smart decision. Watching your reviews they both seem to be outstanding, but reliability is another thing I seemingly cant shake (even though I know it sounds redundant, lol) If you could help out in any sense with a few words of your godlike reviewing wisdom, that would be highly appreciated. (Sorry for the essay, kindof typed it up in a rush)
Once you figure out exactly what you want in a drone it should narrow your choice between the 2. I've had no reliability issues with either. Main differences you need to decide on.. 4k, size, weight, wind capability (since X8 is heavier it can handle more wind). Both are honestly great buys and you should pick the one that will fit your needs best 👌

Great review. Do you know if the X8 has lockable WB and shutter speeds. I'm a 3D artist interested in creating background panos for my renders. I guess the one other things are then ND filters available for the camera. Thanks
It looks like the cheapo edition. Perhaps there will be one with Spark-like obstacle avoidance later. The horizontal and vertical speeds were clearly crossed (how can you have a negative horizontal speed?) but I am not confident of the accuracy of those readings either. It needs work, but then the Parrot Anafi and Mavic 2 both launched weeks before the software was really ready for the market. I can't comment on any product launches before last summer but I think things have always been this way. Maybe in three months it will be sorted. I certainly know that my Anafi is a lot more capable and polished now than when it was launched and several of the early reviews look very harsh and their comments simply are no longer relevant. Why do drone companies think they can let the early adopters (who often pay more than those who buy later) do their beta testing for them?

how does this compare to the DJI Mavic 1 would you say in terms of range and quality. I saw one clip and it looked great.
Very comparable for a better price. It needs a few updates in firmware and software to make a reach it's full potential 👍

Edit: after watching the entire video I noticed the slight blue hue when you changed it to sunny it was better but when it was exposed to different lighting for small moments it was flash super blue then correct itself. Definitely needs work on the tracking and follow me features. But overall not bad at all. I never harshly judge tech when it just comes out to give then the benefit of the doubt. Now if it was like this after a year or 2 I'd be like ehhhh..
I'm glad most issues are fixable with updates. Flight characteristics look pretty awesome! Nice pouch or case would have been nice. Mine ships pretty soon now if everything is ok. Great stuff D!
It does notify you to update once you have an SD card in. It updated everything before this flight FYI and I forgot to mention it 👍

Excellent. Thanks! After these reviews I've decided my top differentiator between the 4K drones is quietness, and it looks like the anafi is winning that. Still, it's probably unfair to judge the noise of the Fimi when it has to fight the wind? I kind of expect the X8 to have much more shelf life than the anafi, so I'm hoping it's still in with a chance...

I have the 2020 model, only issue I've had with the drone so far is how much it drifts on it's own when hovering. It's incredible with that exception, if they could make it hover more stable it would be pretty much perfect for my needs. I use it above our construction sites to do small clips of the machines working and it's a little too unstable for me to just leave it without being on the sticks all the time.

Looks like the speed telemetry is completely borked, and the 'follow me' could be better. But it's still impressive in most other respects for the price. I'm slightly worried about that controller's slide sagging and getting sloppy after a while? 🤔

like the VID and the review but as an old user for MI Dron 4K from the moment I change to my MAVIC I am really in love with the App, the Device itself and the safety you had on it. I have to say even I had a problem with the MiDron and I sent the part to the factory as they told me and after more than 5 months NOBODY contacted me about it and not even answering my request of what happened with all this issue so, Be aware and keep away from this Brand, if you ever have any problem you´ll be totally stuck and with no solutions.

Nice review, can't wait for part 2. Hopefully the Mfg will fix the glitches. This bird is in my budget range. The SD card puller would be a handy item for my dash cam as well. Suggesting you consider it as a give away.

Just catching up with these videos now, I wonder how many of those cons they have fixed in the meantime. This is the drone I am going to buy next. There are landing leg extensions that you can buy along with a host of other little add-ons, some of which look really cool. Thank you for reviewing this drone in such in depth detail

I've been watching your reviews for a few months now , and in my opinion yours are the best of all the others I have watched. I'm over 60 and new to drones. I purchased a mavic pro a few months ago shortly after the mavic 2 came out because of some great sales on the old model. I live in Philippines so am still waiting for it to arrive should be around mid March . ( could have bought in Asia but no sales here so figured I could wait , if I saved 50%). After watching this review I think I will order one of these while waiting on the mavic . Bangood says this is still pre-order , how long did you have to wait for yours , and how long do you think till extra batteries will become available for it.
I have friends that have different DJI and an Autel Evo but am hoping this new one will actually be a quality drone to take away Some of the monopoly DJI and Autel currently have.

This model definitely needs some landing gear extensions to cope with the grass/gimbal contact issue. This video is a year old now so hopefully some of the con issues have been resolved through updates?

If one sees that flimsy gimbal protection for instance as a fault, one may come to "lots". But generally I think the title does not do that fine drone justice. Otherwise, another great video!

Hey. Good review as always. I have a question: I bought one of these and it's great. But I notice that the bottom of the drone (heatsink I guess) seems to get very hot. Even when the drone is sitting there with the motors off after being powered on. 5 minutes just sitting there and it is already quite seriously hot. I'm a little new to drones like this so don't know if this is normal or a defect. What do you think? Thanks!
Normal as long as everything continues to work. It's disapating the heat as it should. Flying will make it work even better 🍻

Yes, I though it had taken some photos in the waypoints which I would have included. Will make sure I take a bunch in flight test 2👍
For the price still looking good. The cons are just software things that I'm sure they will fix soon. Like to see range test you've already don and see longer range test in future!
If their firmware support for FIMI is the same as Xiaomi Mi Drone, i doubt they will ever fix any issues.
I was immidiately contacted by Xiaomi after posting this range test and they said the performance was unacceptable. They pushed an update yesterday for camera and range improvement's. We'll see how it does

Hi! Are you happy with it? Looking for my 1st drone to travel with. I was advised with DJII but they cost an arm and a leg. How about this one? Would you say it’s comparable to the DJII Spark?
This is a great choice. Better than spark aside from not having any obstacle avoidance or hand gesture features.
Full stick down with a drone is a very dangerous thing. I avoid that every time, remembering also helicopters, which could crash due to the vortex state, which could also happen with drones, afaik. But thanks for the review! - Sounds very interesting in general, but without obstacle sensors, this is a big bummer.
What do u mean big bummer ive been flying for years with obstacle Avoidance want to avoid obstacle dont fly to close to and object plain and simple and yes i have many quads alot with out obstacle av and a few with it. Makes me no difference i learnt how to fly the hard way in the early days of quads with out all that stuff we have on them these days. That really a kid can fly them. It takes away some of the fun of flying. Yeah that stuff is all good. But there's nothing like just flying and watch the hell where we are flying is exciting to me. I dont like any thing in life to easy. I like a little bit of being on the edge.
Yer plywood with an x painted on will give the gimbal more space...Always good videos, cheers.
I am very interested in this and also waiting to hear about the “pro” version too. I would prefer this to the Mavic Mini purely for the 4K capability. I don’t care about this one having fewer sensors, it can still do all the automated flight tricks vs the Mini.
Ps. Do you know the payload of this drone? Could I mount a GoPro to the top? I think it will be fine, just the flight time will take a hit
It could definitely hold a GoPro but yes, flight time would take a big hit from added weight. Not sure on max payload. The X8 has similar sensors to the Mavic Mimi (only downward ground sensing).

Great review, however I was wanting to ask your (and the other commenters, of course) opinion on a question I'm sure you've more than likely already answered for the umpteenth time. But- as a guy who hasn't been fortunate enough to test many different types or brands- only for the few moments my friends/family would happen to have one to toy with, my question would have to be
What would your input be for someone attempting to decide between the Mavic Mini, and the Fimi X8 SE? I've seen many, many reviews and I don't believe I've ever had this much trouble sorting out which piece of tech to go with. Just as a hobby flier, and spur of the moment flying, and things of that nature. I've always been under the impression that DJI was a more reliable tech to lean towards, but I believe its partially biased as the first drone I had flown had been a DJI, but I'm not in a position to make a purchase without at least attempting to compile the best info for a smart decision. Watching your reviews they both seem to be outstanding, but reliability is another thing I seemingly cant shake (even though I know it sounds redundant, lol)
If you could help out in any sense with a few words of your godlike reviewing wisdom, that would be highly appreciated. (Sorry for the essay, kindof typed it up in a rush)
Once you figure out exactly what you want in a drone it should narrow your choice between the 2. I've had no reliability issues with either. Main differences you need to decide on.. 4k, size, weight, wind capability (since X8 is heavier it can handle more wind). Both are honestly great buys and you should pick the one that will fit your needs best 👌

It looks like the cheapo edition. Perhaps there will be one with Spark-like obstacle avoidance later. The horizontal and vertical speeds were clearly crossed (how can you have a negative horizontal speed?) but I am not confident of the accuracy of those readings either. It needs work, but then the Parrot Anafi and Mavic 2 both launched weeks before the software was really ready for the market. I can't comment on any product launches before last summer but I think things have always been this way. Maybe in three months it will be sorted. I certainly know that my Anafi is a lot more capable and polished now than when it was launched and several of the early reviews look very harsh and their comments simply are no longer relevant.
Why do drone companies think they can let the early adopters (who often pay more than those who buy later) do their beta testing for them?
I felt like a beta tester with the Hubsan Zino. That's why I returned it 😂
