Absolutely. Still partial to Dave Allen, personally, but he probably fit that original raw sound more than the somewhat smoother / poppier sound they adopted. I say "somewhat" because "pop" and "GoF" don't really go together well.
She's pretty damn good. I love the original dude, but she kills it too. If you haven't heard Robert Fripp and the league of gentlemen, she plays on that album and it's badass.
Yeah, we hear what could have been hadn't it been for King and Gill being a couple of ego strokers. They bullied out Dave Allen and then sacked Burnham.
Considering the age of this Gem, the audio was pretty awasome! Respect to Gang of Four, I had all your albums once upon a decades. SITLL HERE. 👍 also, thanx to U/L PuPPyGuiTar
@@fuckamericanidiot I’m well aware of the time line. I was there seeing both live from the beginning. TH early albums were pretty soft - I didn’t mean those. It’s just as likely they were both influenced by similar bands. My favorite TH album is Naked. My favorite GO4 albums are the early ones Entertainment etc. Very different styles of course. I’m not even sure what I was thinking when I posted that comment.
I remember having a debate about the quality of the performane here. I saw Gang of Four about three months after this show that is recorded here. I loved it. Then again I was stoned out of my head. Regardless I think it was a great show.
Interesting to hear 4 songs that would later end up on Hard played by the full band. Sacking Burnham and replacing him with a drum machine and replacing Sara Lee on four track was not an good idea. Sadly King and Gill could be a real pair of ego strokers.
Is it confirmed that Hugo was kicked out? I guess I assumed he'd left of his own accord. I actually like the drum machine on Hard and think it fits the synthetic vibe of the album well, but the live drums definitely give the songs some extra kick here.
I would have said Lynn Mabry and Edna Holt (Talking Heads) but it was Alfa Anderson, best known as one of the lead singers of the 1970s band Chic and Brenda White...

Thank you so much Sarah Lee. You accepted to play with such three gangs of men. You are the great bass player💗. And RIP Andy😢.
Sarah Lee on Bass ... she's killing it here and was a stout replacement.

I just googled her and apparently she played bass on "Love Shack" too...
What a bloody legend she is!

I didn't know that!
and with Fripp's League Of Gentlemen. She's a badass.@@stevious7278
I discovered this band recently and it was the biggest surprise of the year for me. Bright, fun and sharp.
Same here!
Such a great band. I'm sorry I never had a chance to see them in concert. I love Jon's off kilter dance moves. It fits their music.
R.I.P Andy Gill, I'll always respect you Spaz guitar Riffs. ;)
Awesome performance from a brilliant band! RIP Andy Gill
One of my most played bands when in high school. I don't know why but dissonant tones are my groove. This kills!
Interesting to hear about half of 'Hard' before its release, with Hugo still on drums for those songs.....

Crazy I was there! Stationed in Germany, from Seattle
Andy is such a boss onstage. Pure conviction in what he's doing, just getting in your face, throwing you off balance.
I Just love it! Had the pleasure of seeing them live in 1981. Unforgettable.
Sara Lee is kickin' ass.
This is f'ing mindblowing. Thank you.
thanks for this reupload. RIP Andy.
It's been confirmed DoD/CCP Virus killed him. He toured China Nov 2019.
❤One of the greatest bands in rock history! Intense, unique, insane live show!😂
Those two beautiful black chicks are perfect for this band!😅
This is group is so under appreciated! They must have influenced Talking Heads quite a bit.
apparently so
They influenced everybody.
Heads were around before
Lol. Talking Heads had released 3 albums by the time GO4's first album came out, all of them successful.

Love !!! Thank you so much.
We live
It’s a shame that the material from the Hard album was dropped once they reformed. Those tracks sounds ace here.
Zer Guut!
Great stuff, much under rated band.
Sorry I missed most of them back in the day!
Sara and Hugo sound tremendous.
One of the best rythm sections in the universe
Best video on TH-cam
Mainstream never had your stuff, I got it through 3RRR, and backyard Record Stores, back in the dayz.
They were so unique and influenced for sure, other musicbands.
Shoegazers
Give it up to the Go4 time signatures. Fucking nothing like them.
❤
26:12 my favorite
Why did they never play Ether live?? One of their best songs! Anyway, fantastic performance and video, thanks :)
Kickass.

@@labelledejour802 you’re welcome! But don’t thank me, thank Shazam, which gave me the answer 😸
As they say in California. Most original.
Hugo’s final show
Was going to say, early 83, it must have been one of his last gigs......
wait a second... there's more than 4 people
if you really wanna blow your mind, take a look at the cover of "Hard"

Who are the backup singers?

David Bowie and Iggy Pop

Where have all the anti-capitalist bands gone...

Maybe the only truly great british band ever.
Aside from Not Great Men, Gang of Four doesn’t have much memorable tunes in comparison with bands like the Pop Group or Wire
