  • Skullz reacts to Daft Punk by Pentatonix for the first time
Pentatonix (abbreviated PTX) is an American a cappella group from Arlington, Texas, currently consisting of vocalists Scott Hoying, Mitch Grassi, Kirstin Maldonado, Kevin Olusola, and Matt Sallee. Characterized by their pop-style arrangements with vocal harmonies, basslines, riffing, percussion, and beatboxing, they produce cover versions of modern pop works or Christmas songs, sometimes in the form of medleys, along with original material. Pentatonix formed in 2011 and subsequently won the third season of NBC's The Sing-Off, receiving $200,000 and a recording contract with Sony Music.[2][3] When Sony's Epic Records dropped the group after The Sing-Off, the group formed its TH-cam channel, distributing its music through Madison Gate Records, a label owned by Sony Pictures.[4][5][6] Their TH-cam channel currently has over 19 million subscribers and 5.6 billion views. The group's video tribute to Daft Punk had received more than 358 million views as of November 20, 2021.[7][8][9]

I remember being so shocked and amazed when I heard a live version of this song (the private performance one) and the part where Scott and Mitch are harmonizing the "our work is never over" part STILL sounded completely synthesized, despite it being an intimate, no mics performance. I think that was the moment that I realized they could do absolutely anything, because it sounds so amazing and unreal.

The three main vocalists, Scott, Mitch, and Kirstin, sang together in high school as The Trio. In 2011 they recruited Avi (bass) and Kevin (beatboxer/tenor/cellist) to form Pentatonix in order to compete in season three of the Sing Off. They won. They have been singing together for so long and are completely in sync with each other. They have a 200 plus song catalog, covers and originals, over their eleven year history.
Matt replaced Avi as bass in 2017. This has been the only member change.

Thanks for your reaction! This is a very old video (baby Pentatonix) that includes their first bass singer Avi Kaplan (Avi left the group in 2017 and is doing his own solo work now-- Matt Sallee is the current bass singer). As you already know, the recording contract they won on the "Sing Off" back in 2011 dropped them the first week telling them that acapella music was just a novelty that would never sell. Well they worked hard on their own, posting on the internet and growing a fan base of millions. For "Daft Punk", they scraped together $400 between them and made this one in the kitchen and closet of the apartment that Avi and Kevin shared and it earned them their first Grammy award opening more doors for them. The video on You Tube of them accepting the Grammy is pretty cool (check it out).

Loving your PTX reactions! It's always great to watch with a reactor who is making perceptive, informed comments. Avi Kaplan is the original bass for the group... a classically trained basso profundo, hence that low speaking voice. Apparently Avi had to train himself to speak higher after his voice dropped! He was known to destroy speakers with his subterranean notes until the group starting bringing their own speaker system. Avi has a passionate fan base, but had to leave Pentatonix back in 2017 for personal reasons. If you listen to any of his recent solo work, you will see how much he has come into his own since leaving the group. Likewise, on the opposite end of the scale, Mitch is a natural counter tenor, rather than a trained counter tenor. His voice just wants to be in that range naturally, which why he sounds so effortless in the full tenor range, and can climb up into the rafters when given the slightest encouragement! I hope you continue to explore the full range of Pentatonix music. They are creative as well as talented, and basically poured life back into the a cappella genre.

Yes, the original basso profundo second from the left in cornrows is Avi Kaplan. (Pronounced Ah-Vee) His voice is mind-blowing. He majored in opera and classical studies in college. He and Kevin Olusola (beatboxer extraordinaire) were roommates and brothers. Best rhythm section ever in my opinion. This video was made in Avi and Kevins's apartment and was their first Grammy win. Avi left the band due to health issues with his mother and the toll the touring was taking on him. He left in September 2017 and has an incredible solo career now. You should check him out as well. He has a new LP entitled Floating on a Dream. It's got a folksy/americana almost cowboy vibe to it. Matt Sallee is the current bass and does an excellent job for PTX. Mitch is indeed the gentleman on the right end. He and Kirsty both change themselves up often. Great reaction! Great comments. Thanks!

Just for comparison, here is an off-mic VIP performance of Daft Punk. It’s hard to hear Avi’s bass and Kevin’s beats since it’s literally recorded on a camera phone. You will see how the skipping and glitching is done by them and not in the mix. Their studio production does polish and balance their levels (same with having a sound engineer live), but seeing how similar the song is acoustic is always fun.

You spoke about the layering of vocal harmonies, so I'm going to give you an example of how Avi Kaplan (the bass in this video, who left the group in 2017) layers his voice expertly in his own, original music. In "I'm Only Getting Started", from his new 11-song all-original album, he layers not only his lead at points, but all the back-up vocals are him. th-cam.com/video/9tFYp3pq3PQ/w-d-xo.html

It’s important to realize that this band getting together was kismet! Two of the voices are extraordinary in timbre Avi is a basso profundo with an F# 1 contrabass range and Mitch is an authentic countertenor! This does NOT diminish the voices of Scott or Kirstie or even Kevin! Every member in the group is sooo gifted-it’s just that the rarity of the colors of Mitch’s and Avi’s voices are profound and create the uniqueness of Pentatonix!

PTX treats their wmusicrk like a 'job', a 60 hour-a-week job! They get together daily, at one of their houses, and work on their music. Avi, the original bass, left in 2017 on good terms. He is married and has kids, and just wanted to spend more time with them. Avi has been replaced by Matt, another superb bass, and Avi even helped recruit, select, and train him.
Kevin, the beat boxer, is frankly a jaw dropping person. He graduated from Yale University, with Honors in a Degree in Music (Cello and Sax), minoring in Mandarin Chinese (he is fluent in it) was accepted to medical school, but took year delay to try out with the group. That was ten+ years ago.
The three main 'singers' have been singing together for 20 or more years in school choirs. (Imaging being a high school choir director and having those three amazing voices in your choir!) There are a couple of YT video's of them singing from High School.
Others will tell you their story. My advice is to check out Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairies, the classic Christmas song, the classic INSTRUMENTAL CHRISTMAS SONG. It has zero words, yet an a capella group sung it, and won their second grammy for it..

Avi isn't married and has no children. He does have a niece, his sister Esther's (who was first Pentatonix required chaperone during the Sing Off and then their tour manager until she left when she got pregnant 2 years after Avi left) child who was born in 2020. Avi had touring burnout which is a major industry problem and wasn't sure when he left if he was going to continue in music at all according to a recent interview with "Morning Edition" on NPR for his new album Floating On a Dream released May 20th.
Esther and her family live in Nashville and Avi lives 40 minutes outside of Nashville on a large property in a cabin by himself.
Avi now has a band who also sing harmony with him and a more relaxed touring schedule more of 1 month on and then 1 or 2 off.

If you really want to get blown away by Mitch's voice check out their version of The Prayer (originally the '90s song by Celine Dion and Andre Bocelli). He sings Celine's part for most of it and it is simply gorgeous! Also, as mentioned by others check out Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, Imagine, Bohemian Rhapsody, and maybe some of their evolutions.

    ...on the [S]treet
    ...in the [S]tudio. and
...on a [S]tage, Live, In Concert.
Also, at timestamp 4:13 with their pics in a horizontal strip, they are:

Yes, the bass is Avi, second from the left in that freeze frame. For more effects that are natural vocals please react to PTXs cover of Gold (by Kiara) also there is video of them doing Daft Punk standing around in what looks like somebody's living room. I think you would really love their rendition of Gold a lot. Mitch is just awesome in it!!! They actually have a whole lot of excellent music, they have no problem switching to different genres. For instance, they collaborated with Dolly Pardon and her song Jolene. I realize you don’t listen to Country but it’s worth a listen, they won a Grammy with that one.

$400 films in the kitchen recorded in a closet equals 1 g e the Pentatonix way. In original that's very similar to the style of Daft Punk is Love Again. And if you want to hear transitions of the you-know-what listen to 90s dance medley.. my personal favorite is imagine. The way that they take a message from way back when into the 2020s and make it relevant will blow you away. You also get to hear what is called the wall of sound with their harmonies. It's also in Mary Did You Know. Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairies one them a Grammy for singing a song that has no words with no words again that's how you win a Grammy Pentatonix Style

Pentatonix are the most amazing group. For diversity check out Can't touch this/Sing/ Can you feel the love tonight/run to you/ evolution of music. As for the bass Avi Kaplan "Change on the Rise" and you will never forget him again....lol. Also you should check out Kevin Olusola as well he does cello boxing. Check out his cover of "sign of the times". Of course, Scott and Mitch have the project superfruit so eventually, you should check that out too. Are you taking notes? LOL Blessings

Avi (aah-vee) Kaplan, the bass and Kevin lived together at the time of the recording of this which might explain partly why they are so in sync with each other. Also, this entire song was videoed in their kitchen using an iPad (though I could be wrong about the iPad thing). They recorded the vocals in a closet. The whole budget for this music video was about $400 and got them their first Grammy which they won with Ben Bram who does some of their arrangements.
I think you're ready for *Bohemian Rhapsody* next. It's one of the few covers that they have done that I don't consider to be an upgrade because it tried so hard to be close to the original. And they do an amazing job at it. Can't wait to see what's next! Cheers!
