- Lakeside Park used to have rides, fast food stands, a huge eating pavillion, baseball diamond, a water slide into Lake Ontario, entertainment and game events, like 3 legged, egg, leapfrog, and other races, for many decades. Ferries from Toronto and other places would bring people and take them home at the end of the day. Trains and trollies did the same. The 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Welland Canals began/terminated there. All gone now but the merry-go-round.
In January 2020 Neil Peart of Canadian music band, Rush, passed away. Peart grew up in St Catharines, used to go to the park often in the summer, had very fond memories thereof, and In 1975 wrote and sang the song "Lakeside Park" about it. A memorial to Peart will soon be erected in the park.
