Getting ready to get mine. Such beauties. Btw what a good idea to have that fluffy feather thing to make them feel secure. Never thought of that.

Please, if you're gonna use that feather thing dont use a heat lamp!! It can ignite the whole thing!!

The idea to keep a feather boa and their router is really good. I'm going to pick one up before we get our babies next week!

My favorite breed. There is a reason they go for $15-$20 per head. Super calm and sweet birds that are like dogs if you raise them right. Unfortunately they are so laid back that they can get easily targeted by predators if you free range them. Plus, if you have only a few in your flock, they stick out due to their unique color. I ended up cross breeding mine with some Blue Andalusians and they seem to be better suited for free ranging without loosing their sweet nature.

I have a question about Lavender Orpingtons that I'm desperate for someone who knows what they're talking about to answer. We recently added this breed to our flock. We went to a hatchery to get her, and we ended up buying from that hatchery because it was the chicken equivalent to a puppy mill and we wanted to rescue her. The living conditions were horrendous. I've read that this breed is friendly and sweet, but all these birds had panicked, vacant looks in their eyes. Basically, we didn't take her home because of the quality of the birds. We took her home to to get her the hell out of there. We were absolutely shocked when we saw the Lav Orps. They were gigantic! They stood straight up and down like ostriches. They were supposedly only a few weeks old, yet they were easily 12 to 15 inches tall. In the back was the runt - the one that I ended up bringing home. She was the approximate size of our other 4-6 weeks old chicks. Another thing I noticed about all her Lav Orps were that they were about 85% bald - no feathers at all on most of their bodies. So, my questions are about the size of the birds despite their young age and is it normal for them to be so freaking bald? We've now had the runt in our flock for over 6 weeks, and she's nowhere NEAR the size of her giant siblings yet. After this many weeks, her feathers are just now filling in to where about 75% of her little body is covered. And, yes, she's healthy as far as we can tell. She eats and poops a ton. She's very active and she does all the things our other chickens do - except she's not the sharpest tool in the shed lol.

Aww, poor things! Feather loss is super common in chickens from crowded, stressful conditions. They bounce back quick with some TLC and extra protein

@@homegardenandhomestead9811 She's fully grown now, and she's healthy and loved. It took a long time, but she's gorgeous now. We actually started raising mealworms to supplement the chickens' protein. I'm glad to know we were right and that the feather loss was due to the stress and living conditions instead of her health. I would have bought more, but at 15.00 per, 2 was a lot.
