  • It's been a rough start to the year but we are back on TH-cam and ready to share the journey to recovery.
Lucy opens up about the struggle of suddenly going from the highest high in her career to the lowest of lows, and the huge impact this injury has had on the season she had planned for 2022.
We are now 1 week into diagnosis and have already been busy with multiple scans & talking to specialists about whats best going forward in the coming months.
Stay subscribed as we will be documenting every update along the way...
We are very fortunate to have amazingly supportive sponsors to who we owe a huge thank you at this time, and of course to all of our viewers, thank you for tuning in to keep up with us as we figure out the road ahead.

Injuries suck so much mentally and physically. Probably even more being at a world class level like you! But hey with the down time you should try to get into “speed cubing” with the rubix cube, for some reason I feel like you would be super good at it 😅
My wife and I are big fans btw! Wishing you a speedy recovery!

LCB - sending you positive vibes and prayers for a speedy recovery. Currently recovery from an Achilles rupture that occurred during training for Clash Daytona. Having to learn to walk and do simple heal raises now at 4 ½ months has been tough. Take the time to reset, enjoy family and gain perspective on how blessed you have been in a very young career. You got this. I can not wait to watch your journey. I hope to be back for my one year injury anniversary next year at Daytona. Cheers my friend. You're my hero

When I had a bone fracture as a kid, my parents used to cook lots of bone soup or bork ribs, or something rich in collagen to help the recovery process. Love your spirit and will follow you alone on this journey. Best luck!

Oh I’m so sorry, Lucy. I have Elhers Danlos and as an athlete stress fractures are a very real fear for me. As for bone broth (can be chicken or others like bison), the main benefit is collagen which is what your bones are made of. It can’t hurt, and also is an (albeit incomplete) protein which never hurts as well. When I’ve had downtimes with my disability something I’ve always enjoyed is learning a new skill that involves motor function, like learning how to play piano (you can get a small keyboard that can sit on your lap if sitting down on a bench hurts too much) or learning how to write with my other hand. Feel better soon!

Oh no, that so sucks when your career was going so well. I had a stress fracture in my left hip - no magic solution except to not do load bearing activities for several weeks. I found that drawing and painting or even Sudokus helped keep my mind occupied. On a more positive note, I am glad to hear that Reece has been able to return to training. Good luck in your recovery, Your fans are rooting for you!

I’m sorry! I can’t imagine what it feels like for an athlete going through that injury!
In the past when I was training for my first ultra I ended up rupturing my hamstring tendon and I remember the feeling of going from running 20km a day to not be able to do a single step.
The day after I said to myself “hey I want to go for a brief walk outside” and then I realized i couldn’t I ended up falling down and crying in my home gym alone!
Have a lot of patience and accept the fact that you will be both angry and desperate but in the end the body will heal!

Oh, so sad to hear that! 😢 I was so excited to see you and cheer for you on the races this year! I've had 6 stress fractures from running on my feet already and also a broken finger. It's always very sad but it's part of the process. In my case, since they were on my feet, I could keep the bike and swim after a couple of days, but running really took longer. Take the time to do things you really like but never have time to do because of training. I'm sure you will be back very soon! 🥰 in some of my fractures, when I was in no pain, doing a very light running intercalating with walking used to help, since the impact by itself helps with the healing by stimulating the strengthening of our bones as well

Really sad to hear that :( My gf is dealing with a similar injury on her tibia, and unfortunately she’s been told to “wait it out” - however long that takes. I think it’s really brave, and important that you, as one of the world top athletes, share this experience. Injury happens to everyone, and dealing with it is something we should share, not hide. In the end, this is just another obstacle you’ll have to push through. You’ve dealt with so many to get where you are right now as a top triathlete, this is just another, slightly different one. Put into it the same energy and willpower you’ve put into training until now, and you’ll come out of it an even better athlete. Thank you for this video, please let us know how it evolves, hopefully we can learn from your experience.

I really appreciate that you’ll be sharing your rehab journey. That transparency isn’t always seen in sport. I couldn’t find a lot when I tore my calf and hamstring over a year ago. It was a dark time (it was also Covid time), off work 3 months isolated… I was desperate and I did whatever I could to help deal with the emotional pain without all the exercise I enjoyed. Exercise was always my therapy and most people do not understand that. I went to the gym almost daily just to see people and work upper body water walk water float anything to feel alive. In my head I changed my training to rehab. It helped take the pressure off of losing something and helped me focus on gaining. It has not been easy. Lots of tearful days cuz your hormones play games with you. I found podcasts and books on tape to be a great. I started a journal the day I started PT. I watched a lot of Zwift races lol. I didn’t eat enough so don’t forget to Keep the nutrition up it will help body and mind. Take vitamin D and calcium for your bones. Feed your muscles. They still need the love. You won’t lose fitness as much as you think. Muscle memory is real, and I’m older than you :). I’m still relearning natural body mechanics. Working through fear is not easy sometimes. But i remember a quote from Jan Frodeno. He said nothing is that bad that there’s not something good about it. I can’t tell you how that has resonated with me. Good luck. Look forward to hearing about your journey.

Lucy we’re all with you!! You’ll definitely get back stronger from this, don’t give up!! Learning a new language seems a pretty good idea to keep the mind busy: you may also try with a language with a different alphabet, so you may need to practice more.. I’m sure that having Lola with you will ease the recovery ❤️‍🩹 lots of love from Italy and keep strong girl: we all believe in you!

So sorry to hear that so get well soon!!! Wenn I was unable to excerise I started playing the piano as this was always something I wanted to do but never had time for because of the training. I still do it and it is now a wonderful addition to my hobbies which is super calming and perfect for balancing activity and rest. So maybe you also have such a desire for which you now have time for... All the best! 😃

I had this EXACT same injury in college when I was in NCAA sport. Unfortunately I was mis-diagnosed and my fracture broke all the way through - now I have titanium in my hip but my activity is not inhibited because of it. I am SO glad you caught it early and I hope you have a speedy recovery Lucy! Taking your supplements, collagen, and keeping a positive mindset is crucial to this healing. Maybe read lots of books, or learn a new language then travel to that country some time. :) Prayers and good vibes your way.

    Lucy,
I wish you fast and full recovery.
Me myself - recovering from a trimalleolar ankle fracture. One of the positive - seeing how fast the body is recovering and putting back the watts (i'm cycling only). Be positive... the body will thank you for some resting time...

Hang in there CHAMP!! You'll come back stronger for sure!! Keep them positive vibes going to overcome the frustration!! Keep doing what you can to keep the upper body/swim muscles going while the hip is healing. From the video I can tell you are already doing a great job on your road to recovery! You and Reece will overcome the challenges you all are dealing with at the moment. Just keep 😁, 😆 and leaning on each other for support! Take it one day at a time! Team Barclay is 💪!

So sorry to hear of your injury. During my stress fracture injury in my leg, I learned to knit and relearned how to cross stitch. My prayers for a speedy recovery. And my best to Reece as well.

I had this EXACT injury 2 separate times. My fracture was exactly where yours is. I was still able to still cycle (although kept watts around 60-80% FTP) and still able to swim. My recovery was around 8 full weeks. Also when I got back to training, it only took 3 weeks to get back to where I left off. Don’t get yourself down! Looking back at my endeavor with this injury if feels like I was over in just a blink. Good luck!!!

So sorry to hear this Lucy!! I hope for a speedy recovery for you. The day you posted this (and you posted on Facebook about it) I had been to a sports doctor and he is worried I have a femoral neck stress fracture too which examination points to 😓 going for an MRI in a few days to confirm. I am training for Ironman Cairns - 10 weeks away - so seems like I'll be out for that race. I will be following along your recovery and hopefully get some tips too!
We will both come back stronger. Thank you for sharing ♥️
