    Impressive tough little plant, your tearing apart seemed almost brutal, but that tells me these are resilient plants, when so many handle so very gently. Great video.

    I inherited some of these from my brother, who passed away in July 2019....lovely plants, which seem to thrive on neglect.

      Peter Dane what a lovely thing to inherit! And a beautiful way to honour the memory of your brother.
      Once established they sure do thrive on neglect and I tiny bit of water every now and then , I hope you enjoy your donkeys tail

    Brown dots may be a sign of over watering. All those leaves store water so be sure not to over-water it. It will rot out if you do. My Burro's Tail is well established (around 5 years old) so I water it every 10-14 days but give it a thorough drink. Watering this way also helps some of the salts (from the water and fertilizers) to flush out of the pot.

    Question: I have a few of these and I LOVE them. However, they grow sooo long so quickly and I feel like I need to repot. The problem is that the vines are so long that just moving it makes me lose all the progress it has made. Have you tried any other methods of repotting?

    Hey, this has been a huge help, thank you! the part about sunburn/root rot was particularly useful for me. I've got a donkey's tail which I keep outside on my sunny balcony and it's changed colour quite a lot, the leaves etc seem to have shrunk too. it would be great to see a succulent trouble-shooting vid :) thanks!

    My single leaves shrivel and dry out. I’ve tried 2-3 methods. No clue why. My burro tail that was beautiful for 2years, suddenly dropped hundreds of leaves, this winter. I’ve not been able to propagate one leaf. I have a three stems that are finally growing roots. I use a shallow tray and mist with spray bottle. Tried cactus soil, spa gum and sand. I don’t know what the heck I’m doing wrong.

    • @kiahnahknox317

      Georgia B it could even be a small ammount of Rott.. i would find the ones that are not taking very well and start again (chop the end off like I did and it may encourage it to shoot new roots) if you find any brown dots in the middle of the stem that is probably rotting so keep cutting until there is no more brown bits!and if it is cold where you live maybe bring them inside bear a window . :) good luck

      I had an inside plant do the same thing over the winter. Seems I was over watering and also it was getting a cold draft from the door when we came in and out of the house.

    Water every three days?? I guess so since yours are getting more light but I water mine like 1-2 times a month during the summer and once every other month in the winter. Mines about 3 years and some of the trails are around a 12-15 inches long.

  • @pinkhathonie

    I am also very new at this. I bought a small Donkey tail about 5 years ago and did nothing but water once a month. Now there are 5 tails that are 4 or 5 foot long. BUT the top is thin thin thin. So I was looking to cut it back and get it to fill in. (This is indoor only plant) After watching this I cut 2 of the tails off the main plant and started a new one. I planted fresh cut stems and sprinkled leaves over tip after. I used the cactus soil and did not water right after planting like I would if I transplanted. I am going to wait about 5 weeks to water. At that point should I put some miracle grow into the water or wait a few months to feed it?

    • @kiahnahknox317
      @kiahnahknox317  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Stefanie Fuller I would wait a little while to feed it ... just because you wouldn't want to burn the new roots that may be a bit sensitive !! Good luck

    I'm new to succulents and I recently bought a donkey's tail. Thanks to you i know why mine are "stretching"! Question: Exactly how do you water yours? I've read they don't like to be wet, but I notice your pot does not have a way to water from the bottom either.

    • @kiahnahknox317
      @kiahnahknox317  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Jason Jill Foreman I'm glad it helped !!so I just water mine from the top I use a sauce bottle from the dollar shop and pour it mainly on the soil, but I have not had any problems when wetting the entire plant :) Also I let my soil completely dry before watering again .
      If you keep it outside make sure it is in a well draining pot (my pot that I used has a drainage hole but the sticker covered it )
      I hope I was able to help you :)))

    Does the root ball need any special care, such as cleaning, prior to repotting?

    • @kiahnahknox317
      @kiahnahknox317  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lori Badgero I would only recommend cleaning the root ball if you have a bug infestation. Apart from that I would just use fresh soil with fertiliser already added, so you don’t burn the root ball

      Raknee Hitt donkeys tail takes a lot of trial and error once I see a new root I will closely monitor my watering,
      eg: lightly water every 2 days and watch leaves to make sure they do not go Too soft, as it will be a sign of overwatering

  • @ClumsySmurfett

    Thanks so much for the video Kiahnah. I heard you mention if the stems are brown they may have rot... well... I have a very huge old donkey tail that was my Aunties but have realised it changed to a very pale green now and looks like rot in the stem.
    I've cut all the stems to get it ready for repotting but now wondering if I have to sacrifice more stem right up to a part that seems healthy? Any advice would be super appreciated, I'd hate to lose it all together.

    • @imoannelson6974

      Cut all the rot off. Use some rooting hormones to helps it root faster.

      Just all fresh green colour !
      I hope this helps

    I wanted to "like, subscribe...", but without a follow up after years, I fear this plant tanked and died so I can't recreate this method in good faith. I hope that's not the case and want to say I appreciate the effort, but if it results in others killing their plants, then it's irresponsible to leave this video up.
