  • Nick Bowcott presents the BOSS DS-1 distortion pedal. Simply put, the BOSS DS-1 distortion pedal is a modern classic. For the better part of 30 years, you've heard this orange box put through its paces on countless top rock recordings - from Kurt Cobain's "Nevermind"-era grunge to the renowned distorted tones of Steve Vai. The DS-1 is affordable, it's incredible sounding, and it's a rock pedalboard staple - the perfect first distortion stompbox and one that may well be your last.

    I use my DS-1 to boost the Classic British overdrive channel on my Randall G2 RG75.I don't use the distortion on the pedal even though the pedal is on.The tone knob is at a low level and the level knob up.The overdrive level on the amp set at 3 o'clock.I get a thick tone out of it.I'm a lefty as well lol

    I avoided this pedal for years because of the negative press it got over the years. i can tell you it outdoes a lot of distortion pedals three times it's price. All i do is use the sample settings in the manual and i'm satisfied. Sounds great with the Bf-2 of 3!

    Of course all the great DS1 players are using the original 1978-1990 Japanese ones with the original chipset. They've changed it 3 or 4 times since, its just not the same pedal now. Some of the cheap Chinese clones sound more like the original DS1 than the DS1 now.

    I prefer the dirt from a Marshall tube amp personally. However I do alot of out of town gigs, festivals etc, where an amp is provided. Sometimes I can't choose what I get, or even know what I'm getting for an amp. So I keep a good dirt box like this for such situations. But even at that, only really hard rock or metal your gonna need this much dirt.
    I'm usually just past breakup n sounds heavy enough for classic rock

    BTW the DS-1 is a serious pedal :)

    • @nycpny8396
      @nycpny8396 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mike Hydropneumatic that's what I was considering buying it for, it's dirt cheap, & a classic distortion pedal. I'm not a guitarist,I mess with synths . The thing that I'm not sure is if I added this or the
      od- 1 overdrive pedal, which would be a better choice? The guy at the store suggested the ds1, but I'd have to hear both with a synth.
      Synths sound very different than guitar & they respond very differently to effects pedals especially distortion pedal.
      I ran a synth thru a "metal" boss distortion pedal & I didn't care much for the sound. It got very noisy. I guess I would have preferred a clean overdriven sound or a fuzz type sound over hard core noisy distortion.

    • @sweetwater
      @sweetwater  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great question! The beauty of guitar pedals is they'll work with any amp. You'll run your guitar into that pedal, then go from the pedal to the input of the amp. If you have any more questions whatsoever, let me know!

    Why don't they tell us that the DS-1 can sound like absolute crap if it isn't used with the right amp and guitar. They don't like high output pickups or amps that have heaps of headroom. They work better with Marshall type amps that are set to that position where they're just about to start breaking up.

    Here's my two cents
    1. LED and DC connector is standard to every single pedal, don't bother mention as an extra feature, makes it sound dumb.
    2. The reason why this pedal sold out so much is its price accessibility and the fact that it is a reliable scooped heavy distortion
    3. No, this pedal has far from a tight sound, in fact his biggest problem is having a very flubby and compressed low end.
    4. The best way to get a good sound about the stock ones is having an amp slightly breaking up with a lot of powerful mids like a marshall, and crancking the volume, not maxing out the the distortion fully and having the tone around 10/11 oclock to kill those buzzy bees. Bright guitars work better with it as the pedal as a very scooped sound. Funny enough the bridge pickup of my strat works better than the one from my epi les paul.
    Having said this I thing it is a great little circuit, and with mods can be much much better.
