I think she writes some of the best, most powerful poetry. One of the lines in a song of her goes, "Uncle Sam is rigging cock-fights in the Promised Land" There are many other lines which I can't recall offhand. She is terrific.
This is a great interview... And the interview is about Ani, and that's great... Why did she need to talk about politics. We knew her politics. I loved hearing about her. There was enough going on with politics. She talked a little politics. I was overjoyed to hear her talk about SOMETHING else!...
George's show is just entertainment. He makes his guests feel relaxed so they can just open up about whatever. He's more of a celebrity talk show host like, say, Conan O'Brien or someone to that affect. In this forum he's not a critical journalist, so people shouldn't expect him to be. I enjoy the interviews on the hour, it seems to allow the guests to speak pretty candidly, which I like.
I love the hour, I love Ani, Loved this video! It's nice to see someone openly speak about politics and not fear what anyone has to say or think, that is democracy in motion!
Forgive me for sharing the fact that I am not a fan of George Stroumboulopoulos, yet one must be able to overlook such petty differences and to fully enjoy the material that is being shared. Ani diFranco is our modern Thomas Jefferson and our present day Hypatia of Alexandria. There is a universe of a difference between what the music business machine churns out and of wondrous artists; as like Ani, have been able to create and share. Her music continues to make the masses dance and think.
George directed the conversation to a political space. She made her name, and built her career singing about the problems and issues in the World. She spoke about her new album, it's a greatest hits complitation... what more is there to say about it?
@nosecualquiernombre As a fan of both Spears and DiFranco I find it hard to say that. I think every artist is unique and genuine. And on top of that Spears and both DiFranco are very different artists that can't be compared due to differences in genre.
i think you are right - I haven't seen someone be able to interview her in an honest way - I've met and spoken with her on a few occasions - and she isn't at all like how she comes off in these cheesy interviews!
Great to see her. But don't think George is the best person to be interviewing her. Right off the line he questions her material content and experiences. Does he know who she is? It be nice to have her interviewed by someone with understanding.
Well, Ani D. is a musician, a writer, a lyricist and an activist. Britney is a professional celebrity and a bit of a dancer . So yeah it's a whole different genre.
I totally agree- the interview was decent and then she just dropped that long a bomb but a silent bomb that she didn't even seem to notice she dropped. It really forced me to think twice and farther into someone I considered one of my icons. Thanks for posting this comment- I very probably wouldn't of listened to this whole interview if you hadn't mentioned your concern.
Ani described herself well; she has "the kind of beauty that moves." And she's one of the most genuine people I've ever seen. And any of you people who think she could be racist in her comments, GET A LIFE! Ani has more than proven herself as a fighter for equality and acceptance, and if you don't get it, go learn about her before reacting.
adm, i was thinking the same thing and i'm so so so so disappointed. i'm expecting a good explanation from her. and i'm waiting. impatiently. love, the calitexican.
What strikes me most about Ani Difranco is that, like many musicians, she is not that intelligent or well-informed, but she is very opinionated. She obviously gets nervous when talking about politics, probably because she knows she isn't that informed. That isn't to say she's wrong, because most of her positions are positive. I just find it interesting that so many Americans are perfectly willing to take their talking points from musicians and other celebrities.
Ani never presented herself as a Lesbian.. all the way we knew she was bi ...having a kid doesn't change anything.. her fans love her for her music/ lyrics/ poetry ... she has a widespread mixture of fans male & female .. just people who enjoy good lyrics accompanied by good music .... simple as that Earl.
i find the tiffs that go on in random comment sections interesting. go to ANY random vid; theres a senseless fight happening in the comments section. people are quick to be rightous, especially when their identity is concealed! behind these stoic social facades, are we all attached to our cultural dogmas? do we really hate and dismiss anyone who disagrees with our opinions? do we come here to vent cuz it safer than speaking our minds in real life? are people actually like this in real life? hmmm
I agree. But I still think she should have refrained from saying it. Just because I like her and she speaks about social justice doesn't mean she gets a pass to say shit like that.
My wife is Latino and I don't think what Ani said was anything really racy. I am a Jew and have gone through a share of bigotry and this does not offend me one bit. Chill out, Ani is not a racist.
I think it was a reference toward American attitudes toward people from less fortunate countries (Mexico and all of Latin America) and how Americans have become impoverished in comparison with Europeans and Canadians. I thought it was biting social commentary on the collective attitude of Americans and their sense of superiority toward other countries, and not recognizing how impoverished they've become. *shrug* MHO.
a lesbian? i would say that i, myself, am a "lesbian", but then i would be constructing borders that only constrict and try to define what you cannot define... haven't you been listening? or only making assumptions?
I really wanted to argue with you- but I can't. Touche. I guess I better statement would of been 'used to be one of my icons'- now I suppose I find most of her (and most singer/songwriters) interviews relatively boring.
WORST INTERVIEWER EVER. Seriously, she's ANI DIFRANCO and a huge icon both to music and feminism, and he decides to talk about her children and how she feels when "it's not all about her anymore", and begins with the condescending question: "did you ever think you would get this far"?! SHE MADE 19 RECORDS. SHE'S AMAZING. ASK HER SOMETHING ABOUT THAT. Ahhhhh there is so much WRONG in this interview
Wish we had President Dennis too! Man, I thought I was alone in that. "Unelectable". Up to us, but Dennis is out of the game. I'd like to run you, but you're on your path already. How about Bernie Sanders? Think we can nudge him? White guy, but can you think of a better one? Al Gore gave a great speech at Brookings a few days ago. Another one I don't think we can cajole. Cheers from Mexico. We love NAFTA as much as you do. Not because it's a bad idea, but the implementation sucks rocks.
Wow. She's a lot different than I imagined her to be from only listening to her music. She seems so nice and humble and cheerful. Her music is so raw.
It makes me feel a little better about the world to know there are people like Ani DiFranco around.
what a beautiful person. she never ceases to amaze me.
Thank you for posting this! It was very interesting and cool to see.
My wife and I were thrilled to see Ani in Milwaukee from the second row....what an amazing show. I'm a big fan. Great interview.
I love her so much. She is so intelligent and powerful..not to mention beautiful..
I don't understand why this channel and its videos don't get higher viewings. Cheers George and The Hour-Team.
thanks so much for posting
You can do whatever whenever Ani. You feel, we vibe.
I think she writes some of the best, most powerful poetry. One of the lines in a song of her goes, "Uncle Sam is rigging cock-fights in the Promised Land" There are many other lines which I can't recall offhand. She is terrific.
i'm listening to as is softly and then this interview.. it's a beautiful combo :)
I love her little swirling crazy gesture near the end lol
god, i love her more every time she speaks.
This is a great interview... And the interview is about Ani, and that's great... Why did she need to talk about politics. We knew her politics. I loved hearing about her. There was enough going on with politics. She talked a little politics. I was overjoyed to hear her talk about SOMETHING else!...

Alright, The Hour is on TH-cam!!!!
I love the hour, I love Ani, Loved this video! It's nice to see someone openly speak about politics and not fear what anyone has to say or think, that is democracy in motion!
she's native to--and still lives in--buffalo, ny
I think ani difranco has amazing and different music.I love it
Glad we're now on the same page.
beautiful. i love ani. dilate plays in my head alll the time
yay for buffalo watchers, she is so beautiful and the church(es) of hers are so beautiful too.
Cheers to Ani and her incredible life! She's an amazing activist and musician.

This is one of the smartest hosts that i have seen on TV.
George directed the conversation to a political space.
She made her name, and built her career singing about the problems and issues in the World.

Meether her was freaking amazing.
god shes so effing amazing! she inspires me to be more "real" I think she encapulates the word really.
Great Clip.....ESPECIALLY for her "Politics"!! She is very intelligent. Indeed.....
i think you are right - I haven't seen someone be able to interview her in an honest way - I've met and spoken with her on a few occasions - and she isn't at all like how she comes off in these cheesy interviews!

lucky you! if only we could all raise our kids with such good role models!
god shes beautiful
i love ani :) so much.. i got to see her in austin, and finally. :) I thought.. i can die now :)
Ani is amazing
Yup - they were obviously wrapping it up
Very good.! A very smart lady it seems.!
Once again ani says what i think i wish dennis could have stayed in the race
love her
Ani described herself well; she has "the kind of beauty that moves." And she's one of the most genuine people I've ever seen.

@RebeckaRowan Im in LOVE with her music :D im just confused :(
He kind of cuts her short. A very abrupt ending.
I love the Ani :)
adm, i was thinking the same thing and i'm so so so so disappointed. i'm expecting a good explanation from her. and i'm waiting. impatiently. love, the calitexican.
I love her...Its hard to be famous and an individual at the same time. Somebody is always gonna try to pin you with some type of label and expectation

Interesting--what does does it mean?
ani defranco is gorgeous man
Ani never presented herself as a Lesbian.. all the way we knew she was bi ...having a kid doesn't change anything.. her fans love her for her music/ lyrics/ poetry ...
she has a widespread mixture of fans male & female .. just people who enjoy good lyrics accompanied by good music .... simple as that Earl.
we have the same name:)
she says "you know" so many times, you know!?
amen
open your eyes and your mind.
Why are you here then? The title clearly says Ani Difranco...not "A Place for People to Post Their Inanae Comments". Get lost.
Her accent is AH-FUCKING-DORABLE. I just wanna hug her :D
(In response to the confusion in later comments about "white guy" being the racist statement.)
i find the tiffs that go on in random comment sections interesting. go to ANY random vid; theres a senseless fight happening in the comments section. people are quick to be rightous, especially when their identity is concealed! behind these stoic social facades, are we all attached to our cultural dogmas? do we really hate and dismiss anyone who disagrees with our opinions? do we come here to vent cuz it safer than speaking our minds in real life? are people actually like this in real life? hmmm
Hahaha! Are you fucking serious? Oh god, that made me laugh so hard.
"..the disillusionment with dic-, democracy comes from..." LOL 6:03
Oh my god, a monty python fan! I though I was the only one left.
I love her politics, that is one of the reasons that I ended up really liking her songs!
I agree.
But I still think she should have refrained from saying it.
Just because I like her and she speaks about social justice doesn't mean she gets a pass to say shit like that.
thumbs up
@lizzabbott Ani openly supported the green party a while back.
amazing amazing woman
she's just saying that she's the person from the poor country sneaking into the rich country.
Wow, Ani, you look pretty normal these days. Still love you!
Woot Dennise Kucinich!
My wife is Latino and I don't think what Ani said was anything really racy. I am a Jew and have gone through a share of bigotry and this does not offend me one bit. Chill out, Ani is not a racist.
I feel ya, Shes cool but there is something tweaking about her vibe. NP wish her well...
does it get any better than Ani?
When you love a musician, never watch their interviews. She's so hippy self-absorbed.
I wanna know..Is she a lesbian?? Is she married Im so lost with Ani but im gonna go see her in september!!!!!!! :D She is so pretty.
JQevidentself no, she has always been openly bi, but she is in a relationship with a man that she has a child with.
Ani DiFranco is entitled to one racist comment without getting hassled. Wait, she just spent it.
Sexiest female singer WITH TALENT since Stevie Knicks and maybe Pj Harvey
pay people with kittens? Thats hillarious!
a lesbian? i would say that i, myself, am a "lesbian", but then i would be constructing borders that only constrict and try to define what you cannot define... haven't you been listening? or only making assumptions?

I don't like that she used that term either I was like "whoa, really?" I love her but like damn. That was disrespectful.
watch them slip the white guy in at the last minute. ha. ani is beautiful.
You've got a bad case of the gripe.
-,- Duh that !
More like slip the white guy INSIDE the black guy-
@selsel1986
Your welcome!
Now you can go back to listening to bad music.
haha.
hahahahahaha, touche
She weights the same as a duck.
unabashedly...???
It seems like her only problem is her fans.
The US is a republic not a democracy. As such we have much more protection and freedom of artistic expression.
