I prefer rex 45 to m4. M4 rusts easier in my experience. Of the tool steel knifes I own m4 and d2 are the only ones I consider to prone to rusting. I carry my others cruwear, rex45, k390. Big brown bear has an edge stability test between rex 45 and m4 on here, rex45 is considerably more edge stable. I have my para2 layed back to a screaming edge and it has never chipped or rolled.
Great video, Fletcher!
My thoughts: When ground nice and thin (less than 0.010" BTE), nothing beats Rex 45. M4 isn't as durable, so it's not a steel I'd grind that thin. And when Rex 45 is thin, it stays sharper longer, stops back easier, and sharpens up faster. Everything about it is just better. So in my opinion there's no contest when reground. Rex 45, period.
Buuuuuuuut... at factory geometry, the two steels perform so similarly that I don't have a preference.
I’ve noticed a slight difference even at factory geometries
@@allthingsknives yep. Not saying I can't tell some differences at factory geometry, just that I have no preference. 👍
@@ZPositive I like the Rex more because it seems to be a little better at resisting rust
Never used either , but very interesting , thanks Fletcher !
Yeah rex45 has become my favorite steel even over m4. It has higher tungsten levels and definitely has better edge stability. The edge retention is also amazing because spyderco consistently reaches 66-67 hrc. The hardness is what makes all the difference like you touched on, this allows for rex to perform that much better. However I would also say that it's also possible that m4 might be better at lower hardness levels but this just an educated guess. But your right, because rex is so easily hardened you might as well bring out the best in it since it allows for higher hrc levels.
Yeah and higher hrc will always have better edge stability given similar compositions
CruWear vs M4 has been more relevant for me. REX45 is obviously really good, but seems a little redundant… and you just don’t see it as commonly as the other two, in my experience.
Anyway… CruWear has kinda won my loyalty. Got quite a few blades in that steel now, (just added a 3rd PE Massad Ayoob). 🤠
Yeah Cruwear is the stuff
Gerald at outpost has not endorsed rex45 prefers M4 at least in his videos which I watched just last night.I think the MO helps with rust resistance. I’m surprised the CO doesn’t make Rex more expensive. We still have two other rexes coming in mules too don’t we?
Didn’t mean to diss you fletcher, I don’t talk to Gerald, but in his vids he kept hedging Rex 45,tho I guess his issue was Rex not living up to hype. Guess he thought it should have floated. Three feet above water.
He’s been carrying seeing how far he can carry the factory edge and strop it back before it needs sharpened he said he’s quite impressed so far, and he said he would give it a second chance after me and him talked about it because I told him how much I really liked it.
Own both...m4 hands down
