  • In this video I'm going to sew a cloak inspired by Three Wishes for Cinderella; a classic fantasy cape with a pointy hood. 'Cause those are the best. Enjoy watching!

I think you want society to accept you...as they should indifrent of your state of dress.
You should look into "history bounding" or vintage dress, even if you prefer the 1760s over the '60s, somme simply shorten flowy skirts to not inconvincing them self's and get/make west's in place of proper dress bodices, lacking the hip flare.

I agree I want cloaks to be more widespread. For myself I wear them anytime it gets cold as I have 5 cloaks and 2 capelets. They keep me warmer than coats do. I do get looks, but no-one has ever said anything rude to me. In all if there are any comments they are extremely positive and are people wishing they had their own cloaks or that they wish they had my confidence to wear them as I do. So you can do it! Person by person we can make them more socially acceptable!

"I have no idea when or where I will wear this" that was me when I bought a cardinal red wool cloak several years ago. I've only worn it once as part of a hobbit costume but I still don't regret the purchase because I just love it so much

"I'm stubborn. I wanna do everything by myself and then it doesn't work out." IF THAT AIN'T ME, HAHA
Also, when you pinned the entire cloak, before sewing, I noticed how one the front pieces was pinned the other way around and I just quietly whispered "oh no". But it turned out amazing in the end and you definitely made want to sew my own cloak, as it seems very beginner-friendly (I may be spouting utter nonsense here haha). I loved the video and I can't wait to see more sewing projects from you!

I have never related more to you than when you made mistakes - lack of research because of stubbornness and sewing one seam the wrong way round are exactly what I do on every project! I watched this video while finger loop braiding the lacing for the front of my kirtle, which you (and your link to Elin's wonderful video) inspired me to make! Oh, I LOVE this film! I watch it every year at the first new years day in the morning, with a hot chocolate. It's my ritual for it. You've made a good job with this cape. It is so sweet to watch you, taking every newbi-step on the sewing-road, that I by myself have passed too. Sewingpattern construction is still my worst enemy and I love how freshly you are conquering it. I definitely could watch and lern from your spirit.

I loved watching this. I have actually been making cloaks to sell for a Renaissance Festival here in the U.S.A. for around 4 years now. Watching someone tackle it from an inspired by movie look was absolutely wonderful. I wear my cloaks every time it gets cool/cold and encourage everyone else to do the same. They are warm, a little dramatic, and super practical. Well done I loved it!

I think the pointy end looked really cool, it added this slightly evil/mysterious vibe to yet delicate! But the end result looks great, I don't have a sewing machine but this seems possible to do without it, I might give it a try ( I feel like I'm shooting myself on the foot by saying I can do it without a machine...).
Go to Efteling with this cape, or maybe to a medieval fair, I am sure it would result in some magical photos.

It was over 7.5 metres of hem on my half circle cloak. Even on machine it was somewhat tedious for me, but if you feel like you have the time/energy/motivation to do it by hand: go for it! Or just use a fabric that doesn't need hemming.

imagine, people used to sew long dresses without a machine. of course it's more time consuming than with the machine, and you need tiny, even stitches, but it's not impossible. i foresee you'll be pretty proud of yourself when you're done ;)

The seam where the front triangular gores attach looks like a good place to put a slit that you can put your arms through so the cloak stays closed (keeping your body warm) when you want to do something or hold something with your hands.

I bought a pattern and made one for Halloween. I was watching this whole video relating to you so much. At first glance, I thought a cloak was actually just as simple as making a circle skirt like you. After I made it amd followed the pattern, my eyes were freaking open. I wore it to work, and my sister and I had to stop by the store afterwards, it was a very cold and windy Halloween for the south but let me tell you how cool I looked with it blown out and flowing in the wind of a Walmart parking lot. Wish they were still in fashion

Lovely! I like your hood. When I make capes, I usually cut out half a circle as large as my fabric allows, and then make a slit for the neck and reinforce it with a small gore.
Sidenote, capes should not be lined. Wool is very good at holding heat, even when soaking wet. Humid linen will cool you down. All re-enactors I have spoken to prefer just 1 layer of wool. If you have to line it because it's too thin, do it in wool!

You have made a gorgeous cloak I love how the hood is . All of us that sew have probably done the same mistakes I know I have its because the fabric looks the same on both sides a little trick is to pin either the wrong side or right side which ever you prefer . Being self taught and not using patterns is a lot longer process but you can be very proud that you made this on your own etc I love it .

Experimenting and making mistakes is the best way to learn, in my opinion! I would suggest though, if you're trying to draft your own pattern without instruction, to consider making a mock-up out of cheap fabric first, that way any mistakes won't waste your good fabric :) It is so tempting to jump right in, though... I'm equally impatient to get to the fun parts when starting a new project too.

  • @denasewell
    @denasewell 29 วันที่ผ่านมา

I think the best stradegy is to lay 2 yards of fabric you have to fold it in half vertically so you have the lengrh of you body all the way around.find the center and pin a string the length you want the cloak to be then use a pen or chalk to draw a huge half circle because when you unfold it you have a full circle....cut the neck in the center so you can put you head through and wear the cloak to cut the opening up the front...then of course repeat with whatever liner fabric you choose sew the two circles right sides together then turn it and top stitch...add the hood... and it is a perfect cloak! It does require 2 yards for the cloak and 2 yards for the liner but well worth it to have a beautiful flowy full cloak and usually enough for a hood

Yay for fairytale cloaks! I repurposed a blue velvet curtain a few years ago that I wore in public last weekend. I got a few compliments and no negative response, so yes let's bring back cloaks!
I've struggled with those buttons too. For me it helps to make tiny basting stitches at the outer edge of the circle to keep everything in place. I just leave the thread and cut it off once the button is finished. For me it's just impossible to make them any other way.

It seems like we all want cloaks to come back into fashion. What are we waiting for? Let's start wearing cloaks!

I love the cloak! I recently watched two videos by the costuber Dolthalion, who showed how to make two different types of cloaks. Between his videos and this one, I really, really want to make a cloak!

We really need to bring cloaks back. I don't know why they phased out. They are nice and comfortable, easy to put on, looks cool, ect.
