Whenever my depressive state gets worse I come back to this video. Different from music in the studio, you feel the pain in the singer's voice, you feel the memories brooding in his mind (although everything is fine), the guitar playing in a ''dirty'' way bringing despair. Along with Fjaer 11 Days, I think this is the song that best exemplifies the mind of a depressive
I open up my heart And stick my fingers in But you will never want What I have to give That hits me like a truck rn thank you for your beautiful music Dan.
There’s something special about this guy. I mean, he’s not the most amazing musician out there but I think he has more heart and feeling invested in his music than anyone really knows.
you should look at his other music acts from his past. in like 2003 or 2005 he was making music with tim and they would do this experimental cathartic yelling with untuned instruments that, on the surface, seemed like garble but it was so emotional like you said
The entire performance is stunning, but his vocals ascending and then descending at 6:14 are one of the most gorgeous sounds I've ever heard. So genuinely raw, heart-aching and just fucking painful. Fuck.
i dont know if i am at my lowest point, bc of all the times i said this same thing, but, this time is quite different, and quite worse, so, for now, im glad that im hearing this, bc it made me feel a little bit better, at least for a while
crypto All of his studio stuff is better. That's what studios are for. He doesn't have that sensational live presence like Van Zandt and his solo performances leave the song feeling hollow.
Sonically, yes. All of Dan's projects tend to sound much more full and punchier in the studio version; especially because a lot of the effects and electronic bits aren't used live. That being said, the live performances make the lyrics much more intelligible and give a more personal feel to it. If I want to feel like I'm floating in the ocean, I'll listen to the studio version of Earthmover. But if I want to feel the weight of the words, I will listen to the live version.
I'm feeling quite lost right now. Thank you for your beautiful music Dan
Same, hope you are feeling better a year later.
Your comments are under every HaNL song.
