Exploring CASTLE GLOOM in Dollar Glen, Scotland + Painting a Fiddlehead Fern Shoot

  • Hello & welcome along on this walk! If you're new here - my name is Sarah and each week I head out on a walk with my faithful companion Jack Spaniels, to explore somewhere in this beautiful country of Scotland and hopefully find something to paint back in my studio at home.
This week we explore the beautiful Dollar Glen - a steep ravine filled with lush green plants and cascading waterfalls.
At the top, we find the dramatic Castle Campbell, or as it was originally known - 'Castle Gloom' - a fitting name for a rainy, grey Scottish day!
The strange alien shapes of the emerging fern shoots caught my eye today and I took some photos to take back to the studio to try and capture in watercolour. Watch to the end to see how I got on!
If you enjoyed this video and you haven't already, please check out my other videos - including the three special Skye episodes, where we explore some incredible scenery. Join me again next week as we explore somewhere else in Scotland and look for painting inspiration...

Those fiddleheads remind me of some plants in an episode of Stargate SG1. This painting really seems to pop out in 3d - exellent work on the shadows, brilliant aerial shots from Willie and yet again Jack tidies the countryside one tennis ball at a time!

What a beautiful walk! I love that we have Willie's music and the sounds of water and bird song. And of course Jack was his energetic adorable self. You mentioned earlier that you wanted to paint fiddleheads and this time you could. Lovely painting with such detail. Thanks Sarah so much.

Sarah, I absolutely love all of the beautiful details that you include in your videography. You are sharing a part of my culture and my history and this particular video really grabbed my heart ❤️ because I am a descendent of the Campbell clan. I live in the Appalachian mountain chain here in the United States. The terrain and plant life/foliage is so similar. But we don’t have the NC500 or those gorgeous loch views from your cottage. There are a lot of Scots- Irish families here and one of the main reasons that I adore your channel as well as the channel that you have with Willie about your life on Skye is because I’m also a painter, I love horticulture, gardening, walking, and travel. I’ve learned a lot from you on every one of those topics. And watching Jack’s antics is just another bonus. That’s my daddy’s name, also ❤ I’ve recently been sick and have really enjoyed doing a deep dive into your channel, watching the older episodes that I had missed before I found you. My husband and I are really enjoying them very very much. Cheers to a trip to Skye via the NC500 one day! It is our dream! Blessings to you, to Willie, and to sweet little Jack Spaniels! ❤

One day I was driving west on route 70, a military highway through the Pine Barren Area of New Jersey.
I saw some tourist busses parked alongside the road in an unpopulated area..
I stopped and walked over where the people, a good 40 or more, where picking something and putting
    them in paper bags.
I asked what they were harvesting.
    It was Fiddleheads!
They were of Asian descent and I feel it was there culture, probably agrarian that led to the bus charter
    and the picking.
Some of our local supermarkets sell them in season.
I want to thank you, Willie and Jack for the memories:)
    Cheers,
    Rik Spector

Hello Sarah, Dollar Glen is beautiful and you presented it very well. Castle Campbell is awesome, such a solid well chosen position…trying to imagine it in it’s prime…such history I find intriguing! Scotland must indeed be magical because Jack Spaniels turned into a Labrador, produced a tennis ball from thin air, and passes gates like”now ya see me now ya don’t😂. The Fiddlehead fern is a favorite of mine, lovely how Spring is settled in now. Beautiful artwork, as usual, you are creating a wonderful gallery. See you next walk✌️

The "danger" looks like a power cable marker for buried cables or the like It'll be rubble waste they use to stabilise the path. Lots of bits of china and slag glass mixed into the paths near me! I thought at the start I saw a pole stump from a line when you entered the woods (you can tell I'm an insulator collector) 😂 Those paths with the wavy edges made by the wild garlic are lovely! Not to mention that pond with so many plant species! Jack shoving that tennis ball by you whilst you photograph makes me laugh 😂 I love ferns too and I've seen a few to paint! I bought some little reduced ferns when I was a child in the early 2000s for about a pound each and now they are the size of the ones in this video! Your paintings are always spectacular! Hopefully you'll get to see my oil painted ferns soon too! I have 3 paintings started currently though 😬 I agree with your comment about black by the way! I always prefer to use either a mix of dark colours or a nice Pthalo blue for the cold shadows! You are WAAYY better with proportions by eye than me! I usually paint back into areas to adjust shapes. I should really try watercolour at some point though 😂

    • @shewalksshepaints
      @shewalksshepaints  2 ปีที่แล้ว

Thanks Richard!! I loved the wild garlic around the paths too - such beautiful shapes & colours 😊 I’d love to see some of your paintings. I miss using oil paints - haven’t been able to use mine since I left uni. The thing about watercolours is there’s not really any going back or fixing bits once you’ve added the colour. So I always try and get my sketch pretty pretty accurate (although I know it will never be perfect 😅)

We have wild ferns here; but, I don't think I have ever seen anything like the ones you showed me on this video. We also have Castles in the U.S.A.; however, they are modern over-sized houses built to look something like an old Castle. They are not very interesting (because they are modern). Jack had a wonderful time. I enjoyed your video. I have taken two age related falls in the last two weeks; so, I am being very careful right now. I don't want to break any bones. Is the wild garlic there safe to eat? It does not look anything like the garlic I grow in my rose garden. That was a beautiful, interesting, and educational. I wish I could have smelled to woods while it was raining. Your panting is beautiful. I love to watch you paint. Thank you for this video. Please stay safe.

Hi Arvetta! Thanks so much for your comment - I’m so glad you liked the video. Scotland is definitely blessed in the castle department haha! The wild garlic leaves are edible - we forage them to make pesto, but you can eat them in a salad or infuse oil too. I think they are called ‘ramps’ in the US & Canada? Hope you are doing ok after your falls 😢

We have never foraged fern shoots before, so not sure if those ones were edible. Some of them have toxins in which need to be cooked a certain way to remove them!

What a beautiful video 😊❤️ I’m hoping to head here this weekend, cannot wait!
How long roughly did this walk take you? I also love to film/photograph everything, and I have a dog that loves playing in the water too, so I’m fully prepared to add on extra time for that 😂

Thanks Siobhan! Sorry I didn’t get back to you straight away - did you manage to get there for a walk? We probably took around 2-3 hours with all the stopping for filming, but it’s easily done in an hour or two I think.

Sarah your Scots wild garlic is very different. Does it form bulbs like culinary garlic?

Hi Sue - I believe it does grow from bulbs, as it is related to normal garlic, but it is the leaves that we forage. I think it is also known as ramsons or ramps?

@@shewalksshepaints Hi Sarah, RAMPS, yes. We have them in spring in the USA and people forage them here too. Thank you
