Awesome vídeo, Bumblebee🙏!! I remember well all your earlier videos! You are the Vanda Queen for me and everytime I water my Vandas, which is on most days by submersion of 30 minutes or more, you come to my mind🤩!!! My larger Vandas are growing entirely new root system, very thick roots. Next year I may be able to water less. As they grow larger, training them to be watered less will not only be convenient for me but also for them, I beleive. Your water routine is the proof of it all❤️😍

Vandas that aren't used to this routine need a bit more TLC, but I am convinced you are right and will be able to water less as soon as they have more thick roots. :) I am always thinking of you when I see sparrows in the bird house. :D Have a wonderful Sunday!
Superb vanda culture. The results are very clear and dramatic in your grow space with flower spikes everywhere! While this works well with the pure vanda genus, this method hasn't worked well for aerides who seem to need humidity constantly. I've had to pot them in media. Overall, the large vandas respond well to overnight waterings. I have many vandas now. I would have never dared to buy a vanda without your vanda care videos. Thanks Bumblebee for encouraging so many viewers to try out this genus 😊
I am very sorry for replying so late. I'm catching up with commenting, watching videos and editing at the moment. I had an Aerides houlletiana back in the days in a glass vase. It grew very well, but didn't flower for me. Maybe it was due to a lack of humidity. I didn't know or remember that you wouldn't have bought a Vanda without my videos. You seem to grow Vandas as though you had done it forever. Your Vandas are so happy, healthy and beautiful! Have a wonderful weekend. :)
I soak all my orchids that aren't in sphagnum moss and that can fit conveniently in a plant-watering-designated container I have on hand. I would recommend this watering method for anyone. All of my orchids are on the smaller side, but I still let them soak for a few hours each and then let them dry out completely. This methods also saves a lot of water and reduces my monthly bill. Thanks for sharing how you do this for such larger plants!
I agree! I know diseases can be spread when they are watered together, but as far as I can remember it has never happened to me and it's far too convenient to give up on it. Happy growing! :)
It does not matter the basket take also water or not. You are doing just fine. Never saw so big healty vandas before. Just look at them.....they are verry happy and are thankfull how you care and they sure love it. Thats why they give you back so much flower spikes. Do not change anythig !
I don't think there are any Vandas, anywhere, that can be compared with those; their size, the way you give them the quality light they require and your watering methods of which all are unique. Simply beautiful...!!! Enjoy.
🤗🤗Hi Bumblebee, hope you had a good vacation. What amazing Vandas! Sooo beautiful to see your monsters 🌸 again. I started to do the overnight soaks after my Vandas were getting dehydrated. Within a few days, I had new leaf and root growths. By mistake, I left my Rhyncostylis giganteas to soak overnight and they too were wonderfully hydrated and started throwing out new roots and leaves! The results speak for themselves. I was always told that Vandas and alliances were difficult and a hassle to grow but following your watering method it’s a pleasure to grow them. I even managed to get a first Vanda flowering😀Thank you! Stay well. 🌺🌼🥰
Hi Sue, thank you so much for another lovely comment! :D We had a wonderful vacation, I guess I cannot resist including some clips in one of the next videos. It's so great your Vandas are enjoying overnight soaks! My Rhynchostylis is quite thirsty, too. Congratulations on your first Vanda flowering! Have a wonderful weekend! :)
Sorry for not seeing your recent videos however I still love your videos and I really do learn from you. You have shown over and over that growing vandas indoors and in front of windows will work. I really want a couple of vandas. thank for sharing.
Thank you very much for your kind words. No need to be sorry at all. Although I am very sorry for replying so late, I'm just catching up. :) Happy growing!
I just wanted to let you know I have watched all of your videos and have used the insights you share. I live in Sudbury Ontario where I have been growing orchids indoors for a very long time. I purchased a pachara delight Vanda from a local greenhouse (an unusual find in my area, most of my orchids are from across the country) took a chance and potted it in orchid mix. I purchased last August put it under lights over winter and kept it in my southern exposure window this spring. It is now in bloom with five of the most deep indigo flowers. Thank you for sharing your experience, I never would have looked twice at a Vanda of this size in the past.
I remember you made a Vanda watering video… how many years ago? What? Lol I was studying it since I was living in apartment back then. Now in greenhouse, able to water once I. 1-2 days, I don’t have to do any of soaking…. But your hard work is shown in the growth and blooms. Thank you for sharing!
So good you are having a greenhouse now. :) I would love to hose them down, but as long as I'm living in an apartment soaking is what works out best for me. Happy growing! :)
As always, another great video Bumblebee! Thank you for taking the time to re do your watering .... I started doing it years ago with you and wouldn't change a thing .... so hopefully others can enjoy a easier way with vandacious orchids. And I agree with you about the vanda pulling the majority of the water....some of mine are boxed in awful plastic boxes and you can feel the weight difference after soaking. 🐝🐝🐝
Thank you very much, Selina. They need warmth, indeed. I guess there are species you can grow in a cooler environment like Cymbidiums and some Dendrobiums. :) Happy growing!
@@petersmith4771 Ehhmmm... Vandas are tropical orchids, you never ever expose them to frost! Your vandas are unbelievably magnificent! Maybe slightly drying them out more than usual, occasionally, causes them to send out spikes to attempt to preserve and proliferate themselves? Do you shower the leaves off at all?
Hello, thanks for your very informative videos on vanda’s. I live in North Florida. I have vanda’s hanging on my south facing porch in indirect sun. I’m using your watering method on my new vanda’s. I have two 5 gal buckets filled with water and once a week I place them in the bucket submerging the roots. I’m concerned about crown rot. Do you just soak the roots keeping the crown out of the water or does it matter. I soak mine over night then take them out of the bucket, turn them upside down and shake them to make sure that no water is in the crown.
Love your vanda watering routine, Bumblebee! I only grow phals, leaning towards summer bloomers, but I love to watch your giants. Couldn't help but notice the red and white ties you used to support the vandas. Reminded me of a holiday we celebrate in March to welcome spring - we tie those red-white bracelets on our hands. And when the weather gets warmer, we tie them to a tree or plant. ❤️🤍
Thank you so much for letting me know your holiday tradition. I finally got myself some velcro ties, but this red and white tie has been in my family as long as I can remember. :) Happy growing! P.S.: I love Phals as well! :D
I had no idea they absorbed so much water! We hang our aerides hybrid, and keep the water bucket always beneath it, and every few days (or in Summer, almost every day) we lower it into the bucket and leave it there for a while, until we pass that window again and lift it, and it drips into the bucket again. For vacation we soak it overnight and then leave it in the empty bucket to keep some moisture.
I am very sorry for replying so late. Your watering method is just my cup of tea. I must keep it in mind for some time in the future where I have the conservatory I dream of. :D Happy growing!
I remember watching your first video about it years ago, fascinating to see that this method has worked for you for so long! I do have one question though, which cardinal direction is the windowsill that your vandas in?
I love your Vandas, Growing in an apartment too, The Vanda Man says that they should be hosed down for 15 minutes but I think this is much better. I have started to use Dyna Gro every weekend and each day, They soak for an hour. They can not be left outside because of squirrels so they sit near a shaded balcony with window blinds. These are new so I hope that they will last. My other Vandas that I had before when I started collecting orchids a few years back did not get enough water etc.as well as the root systems were not strong enough. I am hoping for the best. I love these plants and the rhynchostylis orchids. Thanks for sharing your success
Thank you, Nichet. We have to figure out what works best for our individual environment and personal situation. I’ll keep my fingers crossed soaking for an hour & dyna grow will do the trick for you. Happy growing! 🍀🙏

Hi Mamta! I'm sorry for replying so late. I think we could apply it to other orchids, too. But Vandas are really good when it comes to drought resistance and storing water. Phals, for example, have fleshier leaves that transpire more water than sturdy Vanda leaves. Happy growing! :)
Hi, your Vandas look impressive. I've got mine two weeks ago and yesterday I've noticed that two leaves at the middle started getting yellow and wrinkly. I cut them off to see if the stem is not rotten (as it was where the two old spikes are located), The stem seems to be fine... I mean it looks pale green-yellowish, not like dark green but I suppose it's cause I cut off the leaves? I don't know what is causing the problem and what to do...any advice? Thanks!
Your vandas are absolutely amazing :) I am sill struggling to adjust with my vanda setups. I do believe the roots take up a lot of water but the basket must soak in water as well, especially an old one, old wood soaks water much more than a new one though do take that into consideration if you compare a new wooden busked to the old one, it's like bark chips the older they get the more water they absorb I thin kit's the same with the baskets too.
Hi Sophie, I agree that older wood takes up more water. The experiment at the end of the video demonstrates that new wood doesn't, though. It's the roots that take up the largest amount, but the capacity depends on the amount of roots for sure. I hope you'll find a setup that suits yours and your Vandas' needs soon. Happy growing! :)

hello...my first holland memoria tan is on her way to heaven 😇but I am trying once again. the plants look much stronger this time around but I do blame myself too. may I have your opinion? I think that holland tan takes a bit lower light than regular vanda and she doesn't like too much sphagnum moss touching around her roots especially the smaller thinner roots( I mixed moss and bark chips)? Also I wanted to ask did you put them in once a week water regiment right from the get go? or do you get there gradually? thank you it is really astounding to me how beautiful your Vandas are, I live in bright apt too but I don't think I could ever do what you do.
Oh no, I'm sorry about that. I'm sure there's environments they do well in bark and sphagnum, but I grow mine bare root. Mine came with thinner roots that died within a couple of months while it produced those thicker ones. I would recommend a gradual transition when the plant doesn't have enough water storage capacities aka thick roots. I hope that helps. Happy growing! :)
I just came back from my summer vacation and was thrilled to find a new video from you! Yay! I hope you had a wonderful summer, BB. Every time I see your Vandas, I want to give them another try. It seems really easy to grow them - under your care of course! :D However, I don't have a south-facing window, nor any windowsill. Otherwise I really would like replicate what you do with Vandas. They are such pretty and showy orchids after all.
Welcome back, I hope you had a wonderful, relaxed vacation! Our vacation was as best as it could be. As for the Vandas: I think my south facing windows do the job, they're very happy troopers without much effort for me. Have a wonderful Sunday! :)
Just amazing!!!!I am not understanding how they become so large on a windowsill or near there..I have my 2 in window, facing West and in protected light with cloth.. an high humidity,I fertilize every week in Summer.my look ok but nothing like yours.disappointing,really. sorry one more thing from previous question, meaning about the once a week method can only be possible if the plants has impressive amount of thick roots or not?
Yes, indeed: The more thick roots they have and the longer you let them soak the more water they can absorb and the longer they can do without another watering.
@@bumblebeesorchids3408 I am happy to update that my 'pink' vanda has so many arial roots ...really a traffic jam. but I also noticed that inside the pot has not developed much...I wonder what it means...is it just slower? do you have any opinion? ( by the way mine came form motes and maybe that is why she is so healthy ...
If the roots are inside water, nothing can stop them of sucking the water, the basket can’t stop the plant from watering. Also, as the basket is wooden, and the wood is soaked, that will still irrigate your vanda. So, why worry to experiment. You have amazing vandas. May I ask what direction is facing the window. Mine is close to south facing window but loosing her roots
Awesome! Howdy from Dallas! Do you know what the name of your largest Vanda is? Seeing this made me want a Texas size Vanda of my own, so I contacted a grower in Florida and request 1. a Vanda that will grow 5 ft. or taller (many of the species won't ever get large), and 2. a fragrant bloom. They sent me a 14 inch tall Aer. Photisan and a 22 inch tall V.Caisiri x Aer. houlletiana hybrid, both with tons of roots, longer that the plants are tall. And, please, how big is the basket your largest Vanda is living in now? For future reference, lol. Is there a way to send you pictures of them? Enjoy your 2022 summer!
@@bumblebeesorchids3408 Awesome to hear from you! A 9 inch pot for a 5 ft plant, WOW. I also have an 18 inch Vanilla Imperialis cutting that sprouted a 4 inch shoot that I'm training around a moss wrapped stake. All of them are happy so far!
Hi Jay, it all depends on their root system, temperature and humidity. If I have a new Vanda with a poor root system I water more frequently. But they get less and less demanding with time (and with their root system growing). Happy growing! :)
Hello. I just say your video for the first time. I have 3 large windows together. One is south and 2 are southeast. Should I put the Vandas in front of the south window ONLY or use all three windows. Also....putting 2 Vandas in the buckets...as you suggested...I broke a main root on the top. I tried putting scotch tape (ha ha on it) OR should I just cut the root. There are other big roots but that was the longest. Thanks....You're great.
Hi Ruth, sorry for replying so late. South and Southeast are both fine. I hope your Vanda has fixed itself by growing a new big root. :) Happy growing!
Hi bumblebee...do your vandas burn facing the South window or do you draw sheers to defuse the sun....also do you use artificial lights? Thankyou from Canada.
Hi Loretta, there’s some sunburn on single leaves on very rare occasions. I don’t use any shadings anymore and no artificial lights on the Vandas, just on some of the Phals in the winter months (from 4-8 a.m.). Happy growing and greetings from Europe! 🌺

Any suggestions? Thank you, Bumblebee
Hi Joseph, sorry for replying so late. How long have you had your Vandas? My big ones are pretty old and have begun to grow faster and faster with age. When they were young they weren't as vigorous. Have a wonderful Sunday! :)
Hi I just found your channel I'm new to vanda's I just bought one and wasnt sure on on to care for it right now I have it in a west window since I dont have any south facing I hope it will get enough lightthat window get late afternoon sun
Hi Kathleen, I guess West windows may work well, too, depending on your individual Vanda and its needs. I’ll keep my fingers crossed it’ll bloom soon for you. Happy growing! 🍀
@@bumblebeesorchids3408 thank you I hope it does well my phal's that are in that window are loving it their growing roots and new leaves so hopefully this vanda will too
I need the contact number of your plant sitter 🤩 what a wonderful person ❤ looking amazing, Bumblebee! What a spectacle it is going to be when they all bloom! Hope you had a great vacation ❤
Haha! :D Yes, she's absolutely wonderful. No one would do a better job. Our vacation was wonderful, calm and relaxing. I hope you're doing well with all the (orchid-related?) work. Have a great, productive Sunday! :)
Wow beautiful big Vandas love to have one but no space 😟 great video 👍
Thank you very much! I'm running out of space, too. :/
Happy growing! :)
Interesting 🤗👍
Thank you, Helen! :) Have a wonderful Sunday!
sorry one more thing from previous question, meaning about the once a week method can only be possible if the plants has impressive amount of thick roots or not?
Yes, indeed: The more thick roots they have and the longer you let them soak the more water they can absorb and the longer they can do without another watering.
@@bumblebeesorchids3408 I am happy to update that my 'pink' vanda has so many arial roots ...really a traffic jam. but I also noticed that inside the pot has not developed much...I wonder what it means...is it just slower? do you have any opinion? ( by the way mine came form motes and maybe that is why she is so healthy ...
thank you !!!
Howdy! :) Sorry for replying so late. It's a no ID. The basket is about 22cm wide. I hope your giants will grow well. Happy growing! :D
Wow I thought you had to water Vandas daily. I don't have any Vanadas but thinking about trying one.
Hi Jay, it all depends on their root system, temperature and humidity. If I have a new Vanda with a poor root system I water more frequently. But they get less and less demanding with time (and with their root system growing). Happy growing! :)
Exactly, among other things. :) Happy growing!
I bought some vandas and didn't know they needed RO water. Looks like I will be busy😂
Very massive and beautiful
Thank you very much, Michelle! 🌺 Have a wonderful Sunday!
@@bumblebeesorchids3408 Thank you. It is slow and slow today, and some more slow.
You too have a great day.
How do you have a shower if you water in bathroom?
They’re not watered all too often and I take a shower when they aren’t. :)
subtitles please 😢
